Chapter 6:

Mayank was halfway through the notes he had to make for the day when he heard a distinct, loud voice in the library. Who could be making so much noise in the library, for goodness' sake??That too early in the morning!? He put his pen down irritably and followed the commotion.

"Maam, I don't understand...Why can't I take my personal books into the library? It's not like I want to whack books from this place in any case!!"

Mayank could almost touch the sarcasm that was dripping from the voice. Walking towards the librarian, he saw the familiar face. He chuckled. Nupur Bhushan, on the roll, yet again!!

"Ms.Bhushan, rules are rules... No one is allowed to carry their personal items in the library. You will have to deposit it at the counter, like everyone else." The librarian explained wearily, looking quite at a loss on how to handle her.

"But maam, then where am I supposed to make my notes??"

Notes!!?? SHE WANTS TO MAKE NOTES?? Mayank bit back his shock as he approached her from the back.

"You can bring some A4 sheets from the stationery shop for that." He offered. The Librarian sighed in relief as he came to her rescue and smiled at him as she left hurriedly to return some books in their respective shelves.

"And who asked you to interfere?" Nupur shot him a glare as she turned around. Her expression faltered for a second as she saw who it was but it seemed it was his figment of imagination when she continued in the same tone, "Are you the spokesman for "Protecting the library's culture" movement!?"

Mayank raised his eyebrow at the girl's gumption and cheek. "Excuse me?? I was only trying to help you out, but it seems there's no point in wasting my breath on someone who has no sense of gratitude whatsoever and even lesser sense of rules and regulations!!" He spat out, unable to keep the words from flowing in the bitter tone. The girl asked for it, being rude to me for no reason at all!!

Nupur narrowed her eyes at him. "And who are you to judge me again?" she challenged him, now folding her arms across her chest.

"I am just as free to judge you as you are to be rude to anyone you want, anytime you like!!!" He spoke evenly this time. He didn't want to be involved in pointless bickering early in the morning.

She gasped, her mouth a big O. Before she could speak again, Mayank interrupted. "FYI, this is the LIBRARY. So please, for God's sake, maintain silence." He finished with a smile.

Was there a hint of blush on her cheeks before she left in a huff? Mayank shook his head as he put that thought out of his mind. After losing his peace of mind, it seems he was also losing its sanity. Nupur Bhushan and blushing didn't seem to go well in the same sentence. He was just about to turn around when he spotted a diary on the Librarian's desk. Looking over his shoulder for some taker, and on finding none, he lifted the diary and flipped open the hard cover.

In beautiful, curly handwriting, it said The Real me!! On top of the page, he located the owner's name. Nupur Bhushan!? His curiosity seemed to overpower his logic as he turned over to the first page, knowing what he was doing was morally wrong; it was someone's personal stuff, after all; but he couldn't seem to help himself. The first entry was dated almost a year back.

Dear Diary,

I know what you must be thinking. That why would I start to write to u after completing 18 years of my life without letting u noe me at all. It's kinda sad; my life, I mean. I just found out that maa is going to leave us forever. Leave Papa. For another man. And it hurts. It really does. Papa is inconsolable. And Gunjan, she's just a child. She doesn't understand how these things work. But I do.I wish there was something I could do for them. Anything!

But then who am I kidding? When I couldn't protect myself from his betrayal, how can I even think of helping Papa? When I, like a love-sick puppy, couldn't see wat he had been upto, when it was right in front of me? I just hope Papa overcomes this shock soon, unlike me. Diary, I dunno wat he has done to me. Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't tell u about him yet, did I? He has twisted my life. I almost don't recognise myself. He – who u ask? He's

"Enjoying the novel!!??" He looked up just as the diary was snatched from his hand. Nupur stood in front of him, her face flushed with rage and there was an emotion in her eyes which he couldn't fathom. Something else; regret perhaps?

"I – I'm really sorry...I didn't mean to..." He looked around, trying to think of something to excuse his misdoing and when he looked back at her, she was gone. He saw her retreating figure and a strange emotion took over his senses. The pain in those words tugged at his heart, making him want to rush over to her and let her know that everything would be alright. But he couldn't. It wasn't his place to do that, neither his business. He ran his fingers through his hair slowly and walked back to his seat to complete those Godforsaken notes.

Nupur rushed to the nearest washroom and managed to lock herself in before the tide of tears took over. She bit her lower lip from sobbing out loud. She was in no shape to let anyone find out what she was going through. She was Nupur Bhushan; she didn't let her emotions show.

Hanging her bag on the hook behind the door, she leaned against the side wall and flipped over the diary. How much had he read? Did he read the name? Did he find out about – No! Please, I hope not. Nupur shut the diary with a snap. There was no way she was going to find out about the facts. And she could only hope he wouldn't tell anyone what he had read. She closed her eyes tightly and clapped her hands together in a silent prayer.

Opening her eyes slowly, her mind started to wander off with the unstoppable thoughts. I don't think I can bear the questions and the glances. The sarcastic 'b***h' is a better name than the sympathetic 'poor girl'!! She wiped her tears. What's done is done. There was no point in pondering over it. Now she could only wait and watch. What lay ahead.
