Thank you all you dahlings for reading. Aw, Uzi Baby dont cry . Poor Nandu and Yug though, even if she dies I'll bring her back as a ghost in true KA style

Part IV

Yug spoke staring at Nandini as she slept. He told Kavya and Anjali, he was in India because they had a better chance of finding a donor for Nandini. Ironically race and color don't play much of a role in matters of the heart in today's world and yet they did in this case.

He hadn't expected Nandini would require a heart transplant. He had hoped foolishly that with today's medical marvels they would have some drug or device that could bring Nandini back? But it was not to be, they were not going to be given any respite. Their physician and they immediately swung into action once they knew, and started to plead in the communities abroad and in India. They were waiting for their turn and he still hadn't lost hope. But everyday Nandini pretended some more to look healthy and Yug lost a little more of that hope. As Yug shook his head in despair, Anjali and Kavya looked on. Yug looked at Anjali and smiled through his sorrow.

Kavya told them he would contact all the hospitals and charitable institutions they supported and they would surely find a donor. As Kavya spoke about ways of finding a donor quicker, Yug listened carefully. Every word held opportunity in it and he was willing to stake everything. Yug was in no mood of letting go. Not this time- Yug decided to call Nandini's consulting physician in India and looked around

And he saw Kishmish, tears streaming down those big brown eyes she inherited from Kavya Nanda. She had come secretly, hoping to party with Dad, they did that every time they met. But Dad loved Nandu-maasi so much. Nandu maasi was his third favorite as she put it. Yug always told her Kishmish was first and Arin was second, and Nandu came a far third. Third was still respectable enough to hurt her Dad. Was she really going to die? She saw her Dad looking at her and she walked up to him and hugged him. Yug hugged his baby and tried to cry. Where were those wretched beads of sorrow when he needed them?

Part V

It was way after midnight. Kavya and Anjali had left for their home and forced kishmish to go with them. She was too young and a very sensitive girl and often hurt easily. This was too much to handle for her.

Yug comforted her and promised to come meet her tomorrow with Ari, they would all go out for lunch. Yug just sat by Nandini on the couch all night thinking some and talking with their physician in London, maybe there was some progress? Tomorrow he could catch up with work and get things on the way with the new idea he planned to launch with Kavya. He kept thinking and it was dawn already. Nivee walked down looking at a tense Yug. She felt really distressed and asked him to have faith. Now would he please get some rest?

Back at home, Kavya was consoling Anjali. Anjali was broken; she was really worried for Nandini, and Yug? He never showed his true feelings. He always covered for everyone with his silliness but this was big. Kavya would surely help his friend out, how else could he repay Yug for his magnanimity? The strength he had shown at a time when his whole world had crumbled. Kavya had to do something. He quickly told the family what Yug was going through. All of them were shocked and everyone promised to put in their best efforts to try and do their bit to find a donor.
Yug and Nandini were downstairs? They rushed to meet them; maybe they had heard good news of a donor?
No- Nandini looked at Anjali with complete loss. She demanded with tears swimming in her eyes "Promise to be Ari's Mama after I am gone." Kavya didn't know how poorly Nandini felt physically but those beautiful eyes told she wanted to live, Why was she talking of death so simply. Did she even realize the significance of such finality? Yug Mittal hated Nandini in that moment. Why was it so easy for her to leave him, she was ready to go, ready to die? She made all these plans for her son, what about him who gave her Arin? No she didn't love him; she had just lied to him all the time.

A few days passed without any news.

And then suddenly one day Nandini had found a donor? Yug didn't care who it was, what it would take. He just wanted to get Nandini to surgery and as soon as the heart arrived his Nanndu would be fine. Nandini had a second chance at life and he told her she better put up a good fight or he would never forgive her.

Part VI

Nandini was admitted at the hospital. Their surgeon decided to fly down to Mumbai. That would save time and after all the donor was in India.

Everything had to fall in place precisely, she couldn't even risk getting a cold at this time. Amazingly, Kavya was the calming influence for Nandini. He constantly reminded her they were there and Ari would be OK. Nandini pleadingly looked to Yug to offer her the same warmth but Yug was unwilling. Where was that loving man who always listened to everyone, this Yug confused Nandini. All she wanted was a hug, some support, why wasn't Yug giving her that? But Yug, he just wanted her back, he just wouldn't tell her it was OK even if she was gone. What if she felt secure and actually died?

Kavya quietly listened to the physician tell them that the odds of survival after heart transplant had improved over the past few years but it was still an uphill battle, very little probablity of survival. The patients had to be on immunosuppresants for life even if they survived. Kavya understood very well, there was a greater possibility that Nandini was going to leave them all. Nandini was doubtful too but Yug was relentless.

Everything took off as per plan. The surgery would be today. Kavya held up the whole family, he suddenly saw the mother in Nivee and he was going to be her son. This time Kavya was the rock-

Part VII

It was almost twelve hours. Kavya paced up and down nervously, Yug just sat there. Yug tried to think of the good times. One cannot hold onto time, but noone can stop us from holding onto the memories hidden in it.

Behind his closed eyes, Yug thought of when Nandini and he got married. She was so breathtakingly beautiful. Nandu's eyes had magic in them, she held Yug in them as time had stood still. He thought of her radiance as a bride. As memories played in his mind, Kavya looked at Yug's expressions change. He was smiling, and then angry and then again flustered.

Yug was thinking, how Nandini's lips had quivered when he had kissed her that night. He heard her laughter rend the air. Yug was such a "bloody fool" as she called him. He just didnt know anything of women's clothing. He always tripped on her clothes and got irritated. Why did women have to wear that much cloth, layers and layers of cloth, what a waste. Couldn't they just wear something easier? Such nuisance value.

And then Yug smiled looking wicked. He could just rip nandu's clothes apart, ha ha ha. It would be a win win situation. He just held his hand up as if to miss Nandu's punch when he heard Kavya's voice.

"Yug, Yug they are done with the surgery"

Part VIII

Dr. Stein approached Yug as he looked up. Kavya was right there next to Yug trying hard to read Dr. Stein.
Dr. Zachary Stein had known Yug and Nandini Mittal for long. They had supported his work for several years now. He thought he knew Yug quite well as a person and was really fond of Yug. He spoke slowly and chose his words carefully. He had to make sure Yug heard him.

But nothing that Dr. Stein said registered with Yug. All Yug could see were flashes of Nandini, in all her moods, angry, mischievous, sulking and then happy. Happy? Kavya was happy, he was smiling. Why was Zach smiling? Zach NEVER smiled; he was a crusty old doctor who had hated Yug's gall. Zach actually gave him this warm hug? Nandini was doing well?

Kavya was already on the phone telling the family the good news. Zach waited for Kavya before he spoke, he knew Yug wasn't present.

Nandini's surgery had gone great and she was doing well for a transplant case. However, they would have to have her stay in the hospital for long, before she could be OK. There were still several risks, the main one being organ rejection. Organ rejection was the most common risk and this would be known in the first few weeks, typically in a couple days to one week. The other risks he said could be boxed out with technology and some faith. But he repeated, Nandini was still not out of the woods yet. Zach Stein shook his head and patted Yug on the back smiling.

Yug's mind knew what it needed to know. Nandini did not DIE. She was still here, she had put up that fight then.

As Dr. Stein left to get a cup of well deserved coffee Kavya gave Yug a hug, he was relieved. Kavya's warm hug brought Yug back. Kavya said, they should walk down now and maybe just look at Nandini in the ICCU? ICCU-

Part IX

Kavya looked at Nandini and he was happy she was alive. A chill ran through him when he thought, "What if this was Anjali?" Kavya had lost his mind even in that imaginary situation, battling with Yug for Anjali.

Yug and Nandini were almost battling GOD. Kavya was so grateful, so thankful. He had to tell Anjali how much she meant to him, sometimes he felt he loved Anjali more than his children. Just as he thought of her she appeared. And Kavya just grabbed her and held her in his giant clasp. Anjali was surprised at this sudden display of emotion but then she understood. Kavya was troubled, he was a sensitive man. This whole situation had shaken Kavya up; he needed for Anjali to tell him she was there and she was happy. She held him and wiped his forehead and kissed him, it would all be OK.

As Anjali and Kavya looked at Nandini, Kavya filled her in on the developments and the care needed. They could not meet or be in the same room as Nandini till the fear of organ rejection was nullified. She walked to Yug who was staring into nowhere, his face almost stuck to the glass pane. She gave him a hug, he told her it was fine, he really was doing well. She tried to talk to Yug and help him through but Yug would have none of it. Didn't he tell her he was fine? In fact now that Nandini's surgery went well, he was relaxed, and maybe he could get some work done? Nivee was there too looking at her daughter in law battle on. Nivee asked Anjali to let Yug be, she couldn't understand what he was going through either. Did Yug know the answer already or did he just not care? No it couldn't be, Yug did love Nandini, Anjali knew that much. She wanted to hold Yug too and tell him it would all be OK and it was as if Yug read her mind. Yug looked at Anjali and gave her a big hug, said "Thank you Anjali."

Even as Anjali finally found those tears in Yug's eyes he walked off saying, "Hospital mein baithkar pak gayaa yaar"

What was Yug up to exactly? Why would he say something like that? Nivee was furious. She would find Yug and give him a piece of her mind; he needed that before he worked his way any further down in everyone's eyes. And Anjali thought Kavya and Yug could go home and come back a little after, Nivee and she would stay. Kavya let the attending physicians know and left searching for Yug. They finally found him in the parking lot sitting on a wall.

All of them looked at Yug and no one could really say anything- Anjali begged, could leave just for a few and come back within the hour. She would drive Kavya and Yug home while Nivee stayed back with Nandini. Driving home Kavya fell asleep and Yug was wide awake and very quiet. Anjali looked at Yug in the back seat deep in thought. And since, those eyes stayed with Anjali. Through the night, through the week, maybe for a long time. Something in his eyes told a bottomless pain.

They were allowed to be in the same room as Nandini after about 10 days. Yug would just sit with Nandini and gently play with her fingers, he touched her hair and sometimes he just laid his head on her. Every touch was a heartbreaking cry beseeching Nandini to fight on. Yug couldn't do without her. He played her songs, especially the one that told their love so well. All of this as if she would wake up one day and be his Nandini once again.

Time passes and time heals. Nandini was recuperating, coming back to life. With her she brought Yug too. Two months later Nandini could go home and Yug was overjoyed. What Yug had gone through, how much sorrow he bore, how hard it was to hang on only he knew. Yug coped well with the situation in the eyes of all. He could have fooled everyone. But when Nandini came home, Yug lay in her lap and wept inconsolably- as everyone looked on. "Thank you Nandu" is all he kept saying, repeating like a child, and everyone knew how much he meant it.

They would now celebrate now, they won a big battle. Happiness had knocked on his heart after forever. Memories enjoy freedom from the clasps of time so everyone better get busy and make some more.
And it was celebration time.

The party rocked, Nandini was back home and everyone that mattered and didn't was there.
