Revenge of Brothers Grimm - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: Tracing the tangent of Cupid's arrow - Confusion in five senses
It was as if the entire universe was plotting against her; no, not for her demise but something more critical and expensive than death. Pride.
It was very simple actually. Every year their college hosted a festival of sorts where there were lots of frivolities which included producing a drama. Riddhima, the uncrowned queen of words, was naturally handed out the responsibility of scripting out a storyline and handing it over to their English professor who had to tone down the cynicism and many polysyllabic words. After her second year, she mocked her professor by presenting Green Eggs and Ham. Its not that she didn't like the book, but she seethed when her well thought out words were replaced with mundane ones. While the actors breathed a sigh of relief, Riddhima had snubbed everyone around her.
This year, however, her English professor made another professor tell her that she was partnered with Armaan for the script writing part. Yeah, he was that scared of Riddhima's bluntness. As anticipated, Riddhima boiled in cold anger and there was some guy asking people to clear the path for the wicked witch of the west. At least that's what Rahul told everyone.
Riddhima expected the first meeting to be full of energy and unnecessary egoistical arguments which usually resulted in whose word is bigger than the others game. But Armaan's game plan, if he had any, had thrown her off completely. First of all, when he saw her, he had given her a tentative dimpled smile. Riddhima had tried to smile back at him but it came out more of a grimace. During their entire conversation, Armaan was being very polite and understanding. It unnerved her immensely. It was slightly disturbing to know that she preferred a dysfunctional relationship over a normal one. During their meeting, Armaan didn't mock her or tease her but he gave his "constructive" criticism at certain parts. He scratched out "doleful existential complexity" and scrawled "life sucks" in its place. She was too stunned by his polite indifference to care for the red scribbles all over her script. When he handed over the updated script, she saw that the corrections were nothing major. With few choices of words, he had made the conversations in the play a little more casual. He smiled at her as if they were bosom buddies. She silently took her script back and stared at him.
"Is there something wrong Riddhima?"
"Yes. You." He frowned at her answer.
"What's wrong with me?"
"Why are you being nice?" He looked at her, eyes full of confusion.
"I am always nice", he scoffed.
"Not to me", she pointed.
"Oh, you are that type!" He exclaimed with teasing glint in his eyes. For him, it was impossible not to tease her.
"I am what type?" It was her turn to be confused.
"You know you are a kind of the masochistic type?" He waited a millisecond before he bared his teeth. It took less than that for her to lose her temper.
"Armaan..you'you'sicko", she spluttered. He made a mental note for future reference that sexual innuendos were definitely his trump card to win an argument. Of course, it was never in his agenda to make her mad but it was something unavoidable. It was simply natural to rile her up.
It was the same moment when Muskaan and Rahul dropped by.
Yes, they had hooked up'err'together.
(Author's Note: Since this is wholly Armaan and Riddhima's story, all other characters' development in their lives is completely ignored. This is a fairytale people, of course it is biased.)
--o00o--
Muskaan dragged Riddhima out of the library talking mile a minute. Riddhima caught words like "Rahul", "ponies", "frappe", "Rahul", "Armaan", "crush", "Riddhima" and that's when she stopped her.
"Wait, what did you just say?" Riddhima asked her.
"Armaan has a crush on you." Riddhima stared at her and then burst out laughing.
"Muskaan, this is beyond your level of eccentricity." Muskaan simply shrugged.
"We think that Armaan has a tiny crush on you and we also think that he is doing all this teasing and taunting and scaring you in the corridors because he wants to spend more time with you." Muskaan drew out a sigh and looked as if she was ready to go to la-la land.
"Muskaan you make it sound like Armaan is some kind of an animal found in deep jungle of Amazons which is trying to attract its mate by dancing or acting weirdly", she said wryly. Muskaan rolled her eyes at Riddhima's scoff.
"Our understanding is really not that off the mark Riddhima. When he was talking to us at his friendship day party, his eyes was constantly searching for you."
"He would be gauging the damage that was happening to his living room Muskaan. His parents would have skinned him if they found that their precariously collected artifacts were found in pieces."
"We think otherwise." Muskaan said in a final tone which annoyed Riddhima further.
"Okay, stop." He stood directly in front of her. Muskaan looked at her questioningly.
"Your insistent use of "we", "our" and "us" is making me think if you are the couple's official spokesperson. Or is that some kind of monarchy in you which is making you use those words because what you are doing is bas***dization of personal pronouns and it has started to grate my nerves." Muskaan, bless her soul, laughed.
"Someone is jealous!" She sang. Riddhima gave a defeated sigh and huffed.
--o00o--
At library, Rahul and Armaan were having a conversation. Armaan was quite surprised with Rahul's ability to hold out a conversation without sounding too obsessive or stalker-ish. Besides Muskaan, he was the happiest person in this world to know that Muskaan and Rahul were together. He didn't care for the reasoning or for the drama that endowed the outcome. During those times, even Riddhima steered out of Muskaan's path scared of the tears that would come for an innocent question or an angry rant for yet another innocent question. At least Rahul didn't like either Riddhima or him. He wasn't sure why he felt that Riddhima was single though. He was brought back to reality when he heard Rahul calling him repeatedly.
"Why do you tease Riddhima so much?"
"Because its fun", he said casually.
"Is that all it is to that or is it all you want to be at?"
"Why do you talk that way?"
"How do I talk?" Rahul asked.
"Like someone who is either confused or desperately want to confuse the other party." Rahul laughed at that.
"Definitely the latter." Armaan laughed at that.
"So'"
"Just spit it out."
"I think you have a crush on her."
"You think what?" Armaan looked flabbergasted.
"I think Mr.Cupid has shot an arrow with its tip dipped in love potion and has aimed straight to your heart." Armaan stared at Rahul, open mouthed.
"You really think so? With Riddhima in picture?" Armaan asked him.
"Nah. I think the arrow tip was dipped in poison and Cupid shot the arrow to your ass." Rahul laughed at his own joke. Armaan was contemplating on the authenticity of Rahul's accusation. Rahul stopped laughing when he found that Armaan had fallen into a silence.
"Its true, isn't it?" He asked Armaan. Armaan was looking out of window and was silent for a long time. When Rahul wished him good bye and left the table, he heard Armaan mumble a little "Yes".
Rahul grinned all the way back.
--o00o--A couple of weeks later, Armaan and Riddhima found themselves arguing about the script and Armaan's latest corrections. Armaan had taken loony-ness to a great level when he was being utterly polite and nice and everything she didn't associate Armaan with. Of course, soon enough, the other shoe had dropped and he had turned into the same smartass making snarky comments at her. She actually felt relieved when he had teased and taunted her in the hallway.
Half way into the argument, Armaan suddenly stopped speaking and looked over Riddhima's shoulder. A guy was clearing his throat trying to catch Riddhima's attention. Riddhima turned around to see a boy with his hand outstretched with a note in his hand. Riddhima raised her eyebrows.
"Vikram asked me to give it to you." He stammered. Riddhima shrugged and took the note from him.
Dahling Ridzzzy
I wantd 2 tel u 4m a loooong time. I luv u babezzz.
I lve u lots. I luv d way u talk, wlk n red. I wish u wer m9. I wld lve 2 tke u 2 romntic plce.
Urs,

Vikram...
She glanced through the note and her eyebrows were automatically knitted. She looked up to see the guy still standing in front of her.
"Vikram asked me to wait and get a reply from you."
"Oh!" Her mouth turned to an O shape.
"Armaan, help me with this will you? I don't understand certain words." Armaan was little taken aback. Two and half minutes ago, she was ranting and raving at him for his obtuseness and here she was asking him to decipher a note. When he took a glance at the note, he corrected himself. It wasn't just a note. It was a love note. It was written in a language which Riddhima had failed to understand.
"What does m-nine mean?" She asked him. For a moment, he forgot about the animosity between them and marveled at the intelligent and ever curious mind. Of course anger would be unleashed once she understands every word in that note. Poor Vikram, he thought.
"I think it means 'mine'." He replied.
"What kind of logic it is?" She muttered. He didn't dare to answer.
"And what the heck "red" means?" She pointed the word on the note.
"I think he is trying to personify the color that your cheeks turn into when you are embarrassed or when you are angry. Or it could also mean that you look lovely in all shades of red." She raised her eyebrows challengingly. He sighed.
"It's a misspell. I think that idiot meant 'read' but one of vowels dropped dead or a birdie took it away before it made it to the paper."
"That's better. I hate endearments though."
"You do?" He asked surprised by her words.
"Yeah. I feel mollycoddled whenever Muskaan uses endearments mostly because she needs a favor from me." She smiled at an old memory.
"But not your parents?" She shook her head.
On that day in the library, reading silly little love note, Armaan understood Riddhima a little better than before.
"I should write a reply", she said looking out for loose paper. She scribbled quickly and Armaan peeked over her shoulder to get a glimpse of her writing and promptly burst out laughing. When she finished folding and giving it back to the boy who was waiting like a chamberlain, she burst out into giggles.
Dear Vikram,
WTF.
Regards,
Riddhima.
PS: Call me Riddzzzy or Babezz or something other than my name again, you will be only capable of adopting your children in future.
Of course, it was only matter of minutes when the peace that was surrounding them was shattered with their loud arguments and irrational words usage.
