Part 11

Walking past the open door, Bani heard faint voices. 'Tu sab kuch bhool kyun nahin jaata hai Jai?'

'Koshish kar raha hoon didi.'Banistood still near the doorpost.'Tumhaari akeli ki galati nahin thi.' Bani peeked around the corner. Jai was lying on the sofa lying with his head in his sister's lap. Jigyasa was stroking his hair softly. 'pata nahin.' Bani heard Jai speak. ' Par galati to mujhse huwi hai.'

' Forget everything Jai. Start your life all over.' Bani fidgeted near the door.

'I am trying Didi, I am trying very hard. Par Nachiket ki kami mujhe har roz khalti hai and every thing comes back. I lost two people in my life. Mai....I don't know Didi, mai kya karun.

jo kuch bhi karoge, soch samajh ke karna. You are changing your behaviour towards Bani and that is a good thing. Forget everything, nayi zindagi shuru kar le. She wasn't worth it.

Bani held on to the door wondering who they were talking about. 'I know she wasnt worth it Didi, par mai khud ko kaise samjhau? I loved her, chaahe usne mujhe dhokha diya, mera pyaar to saccha tha. Kash mai usse itna nafrat kar sakta jitna usse pyaar kiya hai.'

Bani smiled and walked away from her husband's study, which had turned into his bedroom he last few weeks. She reached her room and put down her bag. She switched on the radio and the tunes of a Hindi song filled the air. Bani got some clothes out of the cupboard and made her way into the bathroom and later into the shower. Standing under the warm water she let the tension of the whole day flow of her.

So he was in love with someone else. He had lied to her before their marriage. There weren't any casual affairs in college. He was in a serious relationship and he had been deceived. That is why he couldn't stand to see her in his life. Maybe he was forced into this marriage and couldn't say anything to his family. They were probably thinking that Jai would get over his heartbreak after marriage. Bani made her own assumptions.

If only it would be easy to nurse a broken heart. Jai was not over his broken relationship, therefore he was angry at everything around him. She was just a way to vent his anger out. It was nothing personal, Bani mused. He couldn't see her in the place of the women he had once loved. Koi kisi se itna pyaar kaise kar sakta hai?' Bani wondered. And who must be that unfortunate women who left Jai?

Bani stepped out of the showercubicle and towelled her body dry. She put on her salwaar kameez when she noticed she hadn't taken her duppata with her. She searched for it in the bedroom where she thought she had dropped it, while humming along with a song. Bani opened the cupboard and rummaged through the cupboard when a picture fell out on the floor. Bani picked it up and stared at it. She looked around in the room and her eyes fell on a frame on the wall. Taking a chair she climbed on it, with the photo still in one hand, and took the frame of the hook. Bani opened the frame, placed the picture in it and hung it on the nail again. She made her way out of the room, grabbing another duppata of the rack.

Bani was walking of the stairs when she heard the noises of people laughing and talking in the dinner area. 'Arre Bani, yahaan aaja. Khaana lag gaya, jaldi se khaa le. Mausi called her. Bani made her way to the dinnertable, hugged Mausi and sat next to her.

'Dinner ke baad clean-up mai karungi.' Bani already told everyone. Ever since Bani joined the NGO, she practically didn't do anything around the house because of the lack of time. She was spending late nights to finish her homework as it was. Still Bani tried to do little chores, when she got the chance, even though Mausi and Jigyasa would reprimand her. That is why she told beforehand that she would clean up. It would save the discussion afterwards.

Jai joined everyone, taking his seat on the other side of the table. 'Didie, Ranveer ka phone aaya tha, it will take him some time to come home. He is stuck in traffic.'

Jigyasa nodded. Before anyone could say anything Jai got a bottle of pills out of his pocket and gave them to Mausi. 'Aap ki dawaai. And jiju, aap ki appointment kal ki bana di hai.' Jai said while piling food on his plate. He didn't see Bani observing him carefully.

***

'I got what I wanted Jai, but I wanted the wrong things. Jab mere paas pyaar tha, tab maine aish aur aaraam chaahi. Jab mere paas aish aur aaraam tha tab maine pyaar ki tamanna ki. I have wronged you, I know that. But I cant change it..............'

Jai woke up startled. Perspiration trickling down from his forehead, leaving a trail of their own. He looked around in the dark room. Ever since he met Pia in a party in their house, he couldn't get her words out of her mind.

He laid back on the sofa and pulled up the covers. He wanted her out of his mind, his heart and his life.

***

'Hey Di.' Bani greeted her sister, kissed her on her cheek and sat down across her in the caf, involuntarily highlighting the difference between them. Pia had sat down a few minutes in a chair with all the grace in the world, while Bani plopped down. Pia, her immaculate make-up and stylish clothes resembled on side of the high society she was born in, Bani in her jeans and kurtitop, a scarf around her neck under which her mangalsutra rested, and a backpack in her hand didn't seem to belong to the same high society.

'One caramel frappuccino please. Bani asked the waiter who was already standing next to their table. The waiter smiled and walked off to get their order.

Bani had finally got hold of her sister after so many months for some 'girl time', like they used to have before. After some casual talk the tone in pias voice changed.

Kya baat hai di, aap kuch pareshaan hai?' Pia nodded her head. 'Its nothing.

Come on di, I know some thing is bothering you. Aap mujhe nahin bataayenge?' Bani said while placing her hand on Pia's. 'it's just me Di.'

''Tu Jai ke saath khush hai na?' Pia asked after a few moments of silence. Bani's face blanched, she felt her gut twist but Bani composed herself quickly and put a smile on her face. 'Ofcourse di, yeh bhi koi poochne ki baat hai. I am happy. He is a very nice man didi.'

Pia looked at Bani's face which she tried to hide behind a curtain of black, shimmering hair. Bani saw her order being placed on the table and took a sip thourgh the straw, which gave her an opportunity to hide her emotions again. 'Bani, you are not happy there. He is treating you right isn't he?' Pia asked.

Bani looked up.'he is treating me nice di. But.........

He isn't trating you like his wife. Pia finished. and he doesn't have to. Didi, he was in love with someone else.

Pias heart thumped in her chest. Did he tell Bani about.......

Bahot pyaar karta tha. Bani continued. But she deceived him. phir bhi gharwaalon ne shaadi karwaa di. His brother died around the same take. Every time he thinks about his brother, he thinks about her.

Did he tell you who that girl was?'

Bani shook her head while taking a sip from her frappuccino. 'Maine unki aur Jigyasa didi ki baatein sunli thi.

And still you are living there, tumko gussa nahin aata?'

'I felt helpless when I didn't know what was happening. Ab nahin. Pyaar kiya tha Jai ne. I don't know, I cant bring myself to be mad at him. I actually kind of......he loved someone so much ki mujhe uski jagah me dekh nahin paaya. Itna pyaar koi kaise kar leta hai Didi?' Bani asked her sister.

Pia's head spun. 'Woh larki bhi kitni abhaagi hogi, aise pyaar ko thukra kar.' She heard Bani say. She felt the temperature in the room rise to an alarming point. Pia choked on her coffee and coughed a few times.

'What will you do now?' She asked Bani when the last cough had subsided. Bani shrugged her shoulder.

'For how long will you live like this. I mean you have a life of your own. Don't you want a family of your own? House, kids, a husband?' Pia asked. 'jab tak mujhse hoga lee lungi Didi. Jab nahin hoga tab dekha jaayega.'

Pia stared at her younger sister, and suddenly stood up. 'Bani I just remembered something. I have to go.' Pia was already collecting her belongings. Bani just watched her sister who was about to leave suddenly, until Bani held her wrist.

'Didi, Mummy, pappa ko mat bataana. Please?'

Pia nodded her head and fled from the cafe and from her own sister.

*****

Jai knocked on the bedroom door. He heard a faint come in after which he stepped in to find Bani behind a small desk with only the desk lamp switched on. Jai reached for the switch next to the door and turned on the lights.

'Andhere me kyun pardh rahi ho?'

'I didn't want to disturb anyone. If Mausi sees that I am still studying then she will stay awake until I go to sleep.'

'How is your work going?'

Bani smiled.' Fine.

Jai stood near the door loitering for a while until he saw the book in his hand. He held it out to her. You asked for this na?'

Bani took the book out of his hand and inspected the cover. She thanked him with those twinkling warm and brown eyes, and a soft smile which made Jai look the other way once he realized that he was staring at her.

Jai walked away to the cupboard and took out his clothes. This was the routine for the past so many weeks. 'Aap yahan bhi naha sakte hai. You don't need to go to the guestroom.'

Jai smiled at her but still made his way to the door of the bedroom when his eyes fell on a frame on the wall. Nachiket's photo was hanging there. Jai looked at Bani who had returned to her books again, then walked out of the room. An hour later Bani covered herself with the thick duvet and switched off the light. She had expected herself to fall asleep immediately but instead she stared at the dark ceiling, thinking about other things.

'For how long will you live like this. I mean you have a life of your own. Don't you want a family of your own? House, kids, a husband?' Bani could hear he sister say.

She would graduate in three weeks but had not told anyone. What would she do after that? Yes, she wanted to have a real life.

The conversation between the sisters was done well....
You are setting the stage up for some real drama to come... i think i am going to have to invest in a jumbo pack of Kleenex soon.
Great job, do continue as and when you get time!

Why can't Jai let go of Pia...after what she had done to him and try and find some peace and happiness with Bani?

How could Pia ask why she still stays in the marriage? Not everyone thinks of marriage as something that you can walk in and out of.

So what will Bani do when she graduates? Will she be able to walk out on Jai?
