Episode 35: Future plans
Arunima and Sammy gave a glimpse into their lives. While Sammy is crazy about working out, Arunima likes mental stimulation. A former Gulf airhostess, Arunima enjoys cooking and likes to shop for clothes. Sammy has developed his own style of singing, which he wants to promote, and he gave up a security supervision job for that. He wants to sing fusion unlike Arunima who is happy singing the traditional stuff. Both want a career in music, which brought them to Fame X. Banjo was on a strict diet and tried to steal a chip from Rehan, who was eating them enjoying Banjo's dilemma like a true friend. Just as Banjo was about to explode, Leena Mogre furthered his agony by ordering them to come for their morning workout. She made her favourite students Banjo and Rehan work hard with some rigorous exercises, not making herself a favourite with the duo. After a quick breakfast, it was time to fine-tune their acts. Sowmya asked Anandrupa to lose her childish voice and sing like an adult. Rakesh wanted a song of his choice, which he didn't get. He got some advice instead from Sowmya. Ritu got praise for her singing and when she mimicked Sowmya, she sportingly clapped for that as well. In an impromptu jamming session, Rehan and the boys pushed the limits of their vocal cords. It was good fun but it also was a learning experience of each other's abilities. Taking advantage of this bonding, Rehan decided to make them open up even further. He invited the girls over and asked what they would've done if not music. Rakesh said he would've continued with his paan ki dukan, Ashu and Banjo with their jobs, Neeti with her studies and Ritu would've been a housewife. Rakesh asked what they'd do if they were evicted. Rakesh said he would like to settle down in Mumbai and do shows. Sammy wanted to take his style of singing to the masses, even if it meant singing outside railway stations and Banjo said he would continue singing with his band. Rehan summed up everybody's feelings when he sang Jina yahan marna yahan, iske siva jana kahan.

As one of them will have to leave Academy tomorrow, Sammy and Arunima decided to give each other presents. Sammy gave her a blue T-shirt, a colour she loves and Arunima gave him a pair of pyjamas to sleep in.

The chirpy and bubbly Shilpa Agnihotri was not her usual self on the sets of the television show Fame X recently. The rumour mills were ripe with speculations about what was the reason for her being so upset and the shoot getting stalled for a little while.

Sources on the sets revealed, "Shilpa is very energetic and jovial on the sets and usually mimics the floor manager or pulls Palash's legs or chats with the contestants and tries to make them comfortable before the shot starts. But she was not in her usual avatar on that day."

The technicians on the sets revealed that while they were shooting the eviction episode of Fame X, she had to announce the name of the evicted contestants on Fame X. Soon after she opened the envelope she realised that the evicted contestant was none other than her favourite contestant, the controversial Jassi boy — Aditya Jassi from Delhi.

Once she had declared the results, while shooting the links, she had to request the evicted contestant to sing his last song on this platform. While they were shooting, Shilpa was taken aback by the results and she burst out crying in between the shoot. The shoot got stalled for a little while as she rushed to her makeup van. Finally she resumed the shoot only after sometime.

Sophie out, Shilpa in Fame X

Veejay-turned-anchor Sophie Chaudhary has been thrown out of SAB's reality show, Fame X. The hostess has been replaced by Shilpa Saklani. Said a source in the production house, "Sophie had problems with the production house, right from the beginning of the show. Now the channel is replacing her with Shilpa Saklani."

Vikas Behl, business head of SAB said, "We have decided to replace her with Shilpa because she can connect with the kids well. Moreover, she is a more popular face on television, which we think will take her a long way."

Vikas added, "Sophie's unprofessional behaviour on the sets was irritating. Unit members were unhappy with her high-handed attitude. Moreover, Sophie failed to connect with the kids and the audience. The production house went through a lot of problems because of her, therefore we decided to replace her. Last year, Mandira Bedi did a pretty good job on the show but this time we did not approach Mandira because she is already doing cricket shows. So, we approached Sophie - which turned out to be a wrong decision on our part."

When contacted for her version of the story, Sophie said, "I am no longer part of Fame X. All I can say is that I am very upset with all the allegations they made against me. I am sure they wanted to generate some controversies to garner TRPs. They were unprofessional as far as timings were concerned. Palash Sen, Daler Mehndi, Ganesh Hegde, Soumya Rao, Cyrus Broacha - everyone was upset with my decision to quit. All said and done, I will miss my team especially the kids in the academy, who called me 'sweetheart'."

Sowmya Raoh makes an impact on Fame X
Bollywood Trade News Network
Fame X, the 2nd season of Fame Academy is picking up eye balls now. With the last 7 contestants remaining, vying for the Fame X title, Sowmya Raoh, the vice-principal and vocal trainer on the show has a tough job on her hands.

Sowmya, an experienced playback singer since 1993, having sung in South Indian languages and Bollywood, believes that the training she is imparting to the contestants on Fame X is more about the nuances and technique of singing film music which she and most of her contemporaries have actually learnt on job through years of trial and error.

Sowmya's latest feather in the cap is her beautiful rendition of the song "Shauk Hai" in the hit film GURU directed by Mani Ratnam with music by A.R.Rahman, playing on the background for Vidya Balan.

Watch Sowmya Raoh on Fame X from Monday - Thursday at 9pm and Friday at 10pm on SAB TV

SAB, Visa to give 'Fame X' winner opportunity to sing Indian Cricket anthem

Indiantelevision.com Team

(19 January 2007 5:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Sony's general entertainment channel SAB, has partnered with the official regional sponsor for the ICC World Cup, Visa International to award the winner of its musical talent hunt show Fame X with an opportunity to sing an Indian cricket anthem in support of the team at the tournament. Apart from this, the winner will also receive a contract with Sony BMG.
The cricket anthem aptly titled 'Inspire India' will be composed by the musical trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy and will be a tribute to inspire the Indian cricket team at the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, in the West Indies. The music video will feature the 1983 cricket stars Mohinder Amarnath, Syed Kirmani and Kris Srikanth.

Visa is the regional official sponsor for the ICC cricket tournaments for the South Asia region, including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This initiative will showcase support for the Indian cricket team, while being the core platform that will launch Visa's activities for the World Cup, states an official release.

SAB business head Vikas Bahl commented, "Fame X is based on an internationally successful format that has the potential to drive viewership with its gripping content and high emotional quotient. For SAB, the show has garnered a larger set of audience with its took and feet and it has successfully increased our reach in the Hindi speaking market."

"Often the winner of such reality shows is not able to make it big, due to the lack of a suitable and large platform. Keeping this in mind, we are glad to announce our association with Visa International for the Inspire India Cricket Anthem in association with Fame X. The Fame X winner wilt get this opportunity to sing the Inspire India Cricket Anthem for the Indian Cricket team. This is an excellent way to pay tribute to all the Indians who have supported the contestants throughout their musical journey."

Team Fame X
Dean Palash made an entre swinging a cricket bat defining a theme for tonight's gala. He invited members of the 93 World cup winning team Sayyed Kirmani, Krish Shrikant and Mohinder 'Jimmy' Amarnath.

Shrikant mentioned that will power is the most important thing a fighter should have. Jimmy agreed with him, adding that 'himmat' makes a difference between a winner and a loser. Kirmani took off his trademark hat and showing his shining bald pate made everyone laugh when he compared it to the smooth pitches our team plays on.

After the trio left, it was turn for another famous trio to announce something. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, the famous music directors had sent a video message to the Fame X-ians. The winner of this competition would be given a chance to sing a specially created song Inspire India at the next World Cup. That's quite an incentive for the Academy students to do their best.

And they started to prove that with Monday's performances. First to come on stage was Rakesh. His Chale Chalo' drew enthusiastic comments from the judges. Daler, specially, mentioned his voice quality.

Ashutosh sang 'Han yehi rasta hai tera'. Ganesh asked him to maintain his performance from start to finish. Nikhil asked him not to fake dance steps.

Ritu sang ''Aa Dekhe Zara' bare feet. When Nikhil asked her about it, she explained that shoes make the stage slippery for her.

Banjo's 'Rubaru Raushni' was a good example of using the stage to one's advantage, a fact immediately noticed by Ganesh. Daler though wasn't happy about the singing.

Dean Palash asked Daler if he had any problems with the western style of singing as Daler was constantly unhappy with Banjo (and previously Adi and Sammy). Daler explained that the only thing that affected him was sur and if that is not right, it was his duty to point it out.

'Aaj main upar' was Anandrupa's choice. Ganesh recalled that it was the first song he ever choreographed and praised Anandi for her performance. Daler was happy with her singing.

Rehan sang 'Ma Tujhe Salaam. Daler's compliment was: Ye gana aap hi ga sakte the.' Nikhil felt there was lot of improvement in his attitude.

Neeti sang 'Aashaen'. From a sensational performer like her, this was below her standards, yet it was far better than others and the judges acknowledged that.

Since all the performances were so good, the judges had a problem on their hands. They couldn't quite decide who to send to the Danger Zone. They found a solution which was a bit strange. They put all the seven participants in the Danger Zone.

Then they decided to choose one each to pull back into the Safe Zone. Nikhil selected Banjo for his X factor. Dalerji asked Rakesh to come back because of his singing. And Ganesh was in favor of Anandrupa for her performance.

That put Dean Palash in a dilemma. His principle was to save anyone whod come to the Danger Zone for the first time. The way the judges handled it this time, two contestants Rehan and Neeti, were put into the Zone for the first time. And both of them had been consistently better than others so far. Usually the Dean is allowed to save only one contestant. But this time he asked Sowmya to join him and saved Rehan and Neeti both.

That leaves Ritu and Ashutosh in the Danger Zone. There will be no contestant votes this time. Instead they will battle it out in the caf round.

Bigg Deal

It's been one year since Endemol set foot in India and with seven shows on air, the company called for a celebration. Rajesh Kamat, Managing Director, Endemol, India speaks about the success story and future plans...
Of the shows that you have produced in India which has been your most successful one?
Undoubtedly, Bigg Boss on Sony because it has succeeded in setting a trend and changing the perspectives of a reality show. The next one is Laughter Challenge show which is doing extremely well on STAR One even in the second season. You'll agree it is not easy to bring a dose of laughter week after week.
Bigg Boss may be the most talked-about show but it isn't high on the TRP charts...
I am aware of that. However, since the last three weeks TAM has tabled the elite panel report which comprises the top 3 per cent of the socio-economic strata where-in the show features amongst the top three in Mumbai and Delhi. Having said that I know the show hasn't cut across a Mahu village in Lucknow or UP. The concept is such that it has early adaptors and then others jump onto the bandwagon. But at a railway station when passengers are alighting and a voice says Big Boss ne bola hai ki aap utarjaye you know the show has created a brand. It feels good.
Who amongst the four contestants do you think will make it to the end?
I think Ravi and Rakhi will make it to the finale. Carol and Rahul are likely to be dropped out in the forthcoming episodes. After that it is upto the audience who they will crown as the winner.
When are you planning a season II of Bigg Boss?
It is very tempting for the broadcaster and us to milk the cash cow by going in for season II now. The house is already there and many celebrities are willing to get themselves enrolled because they have seen the current inmates gaining iconic status. But we have decided to space it out and will back after nine months.
The other hi-profile show which did not do as well as expected was Heartbeat. What do you think went wrong?
I think the concept just didn't click with the audience. Also, we had to face the brunt of distribution problems and in the months when Heartbeat was on, the channel was blacked out in Mumbai and Delhi. If you lose out on the intial episodes, the viewers will never switch on.
All the same, I believe if everything had gone fine, it's response would have been similar to that of Bigg Boss. It would have worked in the urban markets. Even Deal Ya No Deal didn't turn out to be a big deal here...
I am quite surprised with that because it is third in terms of earning revenue for Endemol. Though we did not produce it in India, personally, I think it didn't work here because it was over-dramatised. It lost its balance, with shots of people crying daily on the show. Also, you can't have a rickshaw driver on the show every other day. I think people just switched-off from it.
Are you happy with the response to Fame X on SAB TV? Wouldn't it have done better on Sony?
Given a choice, I would prefer Sony because SAB doesn't have that kind of penetration. Yet, we are extremely gung-ho about the show because it is picking up ratings for the channel. If your show helps in turning around the fortune or garnering shares for a channel it helps in the long-term.
What about Fear Factor. Are you looking at bringing on the second season?
Definitely, but this time we will be launching Extreme Fear Factor which is a slightly different concept. There will be a boot camp, something akin to a military camp, and the contestants will have to be rugged enough to do one or two stunts a day. If they are not upto it, one by one they will get eliminated. In Fear Factor we had a mix of common man and celebrities, this time we will go in for celebrities only.
Besides Fear Factor, any other shows in the pipeline?
Yes, we will be launching two game shows One Vs Hundred and Set For Life. Both these shows have just picked up in USA and we will be starting them in India over the next four months.
Could you give us an idea about their formats?
One Vs Hundred is a evolved version of KBC. There will be one player in the hotseat and he will be pitted against 100 contestants. The play starts with $1000. A question will be posed to the player in the hotseat. Suppose he gets it right and 50 other contestants also give the correct answer, the remaining 50 who have given the wrong answer will be eliminated. The player in the hotseat thus gets $50,000. His target is to strike down the contestants and make the maximum money. The hotseat player can decide the kind of question he wants.
Set For Life is a simple game. There will be 15 steps and each will have a red or white light. If the contestant steps on a red light he has to go down and white light will take him up. Every step has a number. On the first step, the contestant may get a check of one lakh each for six months, the second step may fetch him two lakhs every month for 10 months and so on. The only twist to the game is that relatives or friends of the contestant sitting in a secret room can put a stop to his game by pressing a button. So even if the contestant wants to go further he will not be able to do so. It's a question of emotional quotient and trust. After an year and seven shows in India, what is your take on the Indian viewer?
We as production houses tend to over-intellectualise what the common man wants.
Actually, it is very simple. The housewives watch soaps and they like it. What they want is different flavours. So, we will tweak the reality format to give them talent-hunts, game shows and adventure.

Cricket Anthem

For Santanu Mukherjee, the country manager of Visa International for South Asia operation, it was an unusual press conference. He was announcing a partnership venture with SAB for the contestants of the channel's talent hunt show Fame X. The winner of Fame X will receive a prestigious contract with Sony BMG and a big platform from Sony Entertainment Network and Visa International by way of an opportunity to sing the Inspire India Cricket Anthem for the Indian cricket team competing in the forthcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 to be held in West Indies in March. The Inspire India Cricket Anthem will be composed by Bollywood music director troika Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy as a tribute to inspire the Indian cricket team. The music video will feature the 1983 cricket stars Mohinder Amarnath, Syed Kirmani and Kris Srikanth. It will symbolize India's support, passion, encouragement and inspiration for the Indian team. Visa is the regional official sponsor and 'preferred card' of the ICC cricket tournament and the Inspire India Cricket Anthem initiative will showcase support for the Indian team, while being the core platform that will launch Visa's activities for the World Cup. The press conference that started on the sets of Fame X at RK Studios with a rocking performance by last Friday's evicted contestant Samy demonstrated the power of music that unites India. The other power that runs through the length and breadth of the country and brings the nation together is the national passion called cricket. With close to 1.4 billion cardholders and an annual card sales volume in excess of US $ four trillion Visa is the new emerging plastic money power in India. Speaking at the formal launch of the partnership between Visa and Sony Entertainment Santanu Mukherjee said, "I am a financial man and this press do is quite unusual for me. Fame X is a music talent hunt show. It's about singing, winning, losing and creating celebrities. But Visa is a piece of plastic which is a global currency. Visa is all about power and empowerment and it symbolizes aspirational values."

Talking about the Inspire India Cricket Anthem and the music video Mukherjee said, in keeping with Visa's brand image the song and video will be inspirational in nature and based on the concept of motivation and aspirations. Pointing towards the seven contestants he said one of them will sing the anthem and wished them great success in their careers. "We also wish the Indian team great success as we will try and encourage them to win the World Cup," he added. Music composer Shankar said they were very excited about composing the anthem. "I am confident that the song will rock. We are honoured to be associated with a brand like Visa, cricket which is the national passion, Fame X and SAB. The song will be our tribute to the Indian cricket team."

"It's a great idea," said Palash Sen who heads the Fame X academy. "I wish all the seven contestants had got the chance to sing the song because all of them are equally good. If I had a way I would have given them the opportunity. I thank SAB for giving such a big platform to one of my kids." The show has completed eight weeks with some dazzling performances. According to SAB's business head Vikas Bahl, it has generated a larger set of audience with its look and feel and it has successfully increased the channel's reach in the Hindi speaking market. "With its gripping content and high emotional quotient besides the all important X factor Fame X has the potential to drive much bigger viewership in its final leg."

Dean tunes in
Dean Palash asked the Academy students to meet him on gala stage. Once gathered, he proceeded to explain stage mannerisms to them, Palash style. He gave them many pointers. He told them how to make use of the mike stand. He told them how to make use of the stage space. He told them how not to be on the stage. Singing a song, he took off his leather jacket and threw it on stage. He explained them not to pick it up during the performance, indeed not to pay any further attention to it. What he was trying to convey was the Rock star attitude. He showed them ten different styles to walk on stage. Never keep your legs together, he advised and never show your back to the audience for more than three seconds. He taught them how to make wide gestures and asked them to stop hiding themselves on stage. He asked Rakesh to demonstrate what he's learned and Rakesh's performance looked really different after absorbing these fundas. He observed that Neeti was gesturing in a boringly conservative style and helped her make it interesting. After a session with the master performer, the students suddenly seemed prepared to take on the world. But Palash wasn't going to let them go that easily. He asked them to get ready for a voting round. Confused by this order, as there are only two contestants this time in the Danger Zone, the students couldn't make up their minds. Dean Palash then explained that he didn't want them to vote for just those two but for everybody. He wanted them each to pick one student they didn't think deserved to be in the Academy at this point. Initially the students were reluctant to name any fellow contestants and tried to find an easy way out by naming themselves as the weakest one. But the Dean saw through this tactic immediately and insisted that they vote truthfully, explaining that this kind of feedback would actually prove helpful in the long run. Neeti and Rehan picked Rakesh for his lack of dancing ability. Banjo picked Ritu for not showing her full potential and Ritu returned the compliment by picking Banjo for not singing well. Rakesh, Ashutosh and Anandrupa all picked Neeti as they felt that even though she was consistent in her performance, she hadn't done anything different and not taken any chances. Dean Palash agreed with their appraisals and released the relieved lot. For the first time in the history of the show, Dean Palash had chosen Star of the week who was in the Danger Zone. It was Ashutosh. Dean wanted to give a gift to this smashing performer. He and Banjo cooked up a plan. They planted Ashu's gift in his cupboard and the Dean, sitting in his room called for Ashu. An unsuspecting Ashu was asked by the Dean to get his jacket. Ashu went to the boys room, lifted the jacket which was lying on the bed and returned to the Dean's room. The Dean then asked him to fetch a shirt, figuring now he will have to open his cupboard. And he did. Only he didn't notice the gift behind all his other stuff and returned once again to the Dean's room. While an astonished Banjo and Rehan kept wondering how Ashu could miss the big bundle of beautifully wrapped paper, the Dean once again made some excuse about changing Ashu's dress style and sent him back to his room. A completely baffled Ashu opened his cupboard for the second time and finally noticed the blue bundle. It was a Saxophone, something Ashu loves to play. The true cause of his forced visits to the cupboard dawned upon him and a very thankful Ashu hugged his beloved Dean with happy gratitude. The Dean called them in the music room to make an announcement. They were supposed to compose a tune, he said, that would reflect the Academy's theme. Just to make it interesting, he would divide them into two groups and the winning tune would be selected to be written and composed by the Dean himself. As the excited students listened eagerly, he told them that they will play the song along with his band 'Euphoria'. And that's exactly how one can describe the student's reactions. They were 'euphoric' on hearing the news and eagerly started working on the tunes.

What did they come up with is something we will see on the next episode.
