Love that was never meant to be.
They were touted as the couple of Fame Gurukul, he with his charming stage presence and she with her charming voice. I say "charm" because they were thowrn together to charm their way into the audiences hearts. All was fine and going according to script until Ruprekha' heart strings started to sing a different note. Ruprekha had a boyfriend that she had split up with and similar was the case with Rex. It was a case of being in a situation where both, nursing broken hearts started to find solace in each other.
Prior to this Rex, with his good demeanour and apparent charm had warmed his way into the hearts of atleast one of the contestants, Chavi but her early exit put paid to hopes of any romance blossoming between them. Chavi did have a thing going for Rex, a point that proved itself when all the contestants returned to Fame Gurukul before the final Ranbhoomi. More on this later.
Meanwhile the blossoming romance between Rex and Rupu (as Rex fondly called her) was at its peak, and the songs "Bin Tere Sanam" and "Kheh Doon Tume" brought this to the surface.
The relationship hit a minor snag, when Rex who, when quizzed by the Fame Gurukul hosts, publicly acknowledged that Rupu was like his sister, something that didn't go down well with Ruprekha. According to Gurukul sources, Rupu was mad as hell at her Rexy. Rex and Rupu were seen arguing late into the night that day. Rex finally tried to reason out with Rupu saying they ought to colour their relationship under the garb of Bhai-Behen keeping in mind the larger interest of their being in Fame Gurukul, to become the Fame Jodi.
Point to note, whenever Rupu was quizzed about her relationship with Rex by the hosts she would glance up to him almost looking for solace and come out with her practised response "Aisa Kuch Bhi Nahin Hai". Rex on the other hand stuck to his response of Rupu being his Behen, even when the other contestants such as his friend Qazi and Sandeep tried to tease to evoke an acknowledgement.
The relationship first started showing cracks with Arpita's prank of leaving Gurukul and Rex's joining forces with Arpita to the apparent discomfort of Qazi and Ruprekha. Ruprekha tried to get even with Arpita during the 60's dress photo shoot. Watch the scene, in the bedroom where Rupu tells Arpita that it Rex that she is looking at as her partner in Fame Jodi and that she has a sort of mind connection with him. This drove Arpita to tears who had to be comforted by madam, Padma.
The final nail in the relationship was hammered during the same photo shoot with clothes of the 60's period. If one would look at the videos carefully, one can see Ruprekha pleading with Rex to say something nice. The first time Rex tells her "Rupu, I love you". She coyly tells him say something better and he says "Rupu, Mujhe Tumse Pyar Hai" and Ruprekha responds, "Mujhe Iske Baren Mein Sochana Padega".
Move to scene two the photo shoot. Rex and Arpita get cosy at the photo shoot so much so that Rex actually lifts Arpita in his arms and Ruprekha sitting in a corner cannot digest this scene.
Move to scene three, as Qazi and Arpita get together for their video bonding, Rex and Ruprekha partly visible in the background and partly hidden by the wall are arguing in a corner. The point of discussion Rex's pose with Arpita in his arms, something that Rupu didn't take lightly.
Move to scene four, its Rupu and Qazi on the video frame now and this is Rupu's turn to get even. She gets a little to close to Qazi who seeing the apparent change in her shouts back to Rex saying "Rex, Dekh Teri Mehbooba Kho Mein Tujse Choora Loonga".
From hereon the relationship really went downhill and inspite of Rex's attempts to get it back on track, the songs "Thadap Thadap" and "Tum Dena Saat Mera" was according to Gurulul sources, specially chosen and sung for Ruprekha to drive home the point that he still wanted her to be a part of his life. But by then the damage had been done and Ruprekha had made up her mind that she had had enough of Rex.
Ruprekha's apparent volteface vis-a-vis Rex was also driven by the fact that Qazi's ever soaring popularity with the audience gave her the direction in which side her chances of making the FJ lay. This was componded by Rex's ganging up with Arpita to demean Qazi, though off the contentious topics, Rex and Qazi continued to be great friends. To Rex' credit even though Ruprekha assumed a hostile reaction to him in the final stages and made some damaging comments, he continued to maintain that she was his friend and would remain so no matter what. Proof, he tried to portect his Rupu from the awkwardness of reponding to Mandira's and Manav's question as to why she had voted against him, on more than once occassion.
According to Gurukul sources, Ruprekha couldn't bear to see the fact that Rex couldn't admit to their friendship and kept hiding it under the cloak of Bhai-Behen. When they were questioned by Prahant Sir, about Rex' love for Ruprekha, all opted for true love except Ruprekha who refrained from an answer obviously piqqued by Rex's continued tagging the relationship as Bahi-Behen even though everyone else including herself saw more to it. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Did you know just before the final Ranboomi the contestants were asked to cast their votes as to who would be the most likely person to be out of Gurukul and Ruprekha got two votes. The persons who voted against her were Arpita and Qazi whereas she voted against Rex and Rex voted against Arpita. Doesn't this say much for Rex' love whether brotherly or otherwise for her?
Lets now move to the final stage when all the former contestants came in to cheer them up and all three jodi's performed infront of them and were evaluated on a scale of 10. Arpita gave the Ruprekha-Rex Jodi a hard to understand 6/10 reason, here was Arpita's chance of letting Ruprekha know that it was she who should have been there in her place.
Now move on to the Rex and Qazi jodi gig and watch Chavi, much to Rex's delight his former best friend gave them a cool 11/10. The other friends all rated this jodi either a perfect 10 or just under. Chavi's 11/10 was some sort of fodder to the Gurukul gossip that Chavi had a thing going for Rex. It must be pointed out though that at a later stage Chavi did admit that it was the Rex-Rupu combo she saw, as the ideal Fame Jodi.
According to Gurukul sources and television pundits, Ruprekha was one smart cookie and dumped Rex the moment she knew her chances of making the final lay in aligning with Qazi even though Qazi's prefered choice was Rex and so too the faculty's. I will touch base on this subject latter in the second part of Inside Gurukul - Javed Akhtar's influence in the selection of the Qazi-Rprekha jodi.
As I wind up some questions keep bothering me. Was it really love that was to it? or was it a union of convenience that went horribly wrong? Was it the pain and stress of competition or was it her dissappointment in Rex that led her to admit to press that the last 15 days in Gurukul were very discomforting? more specifical was her unbelievable statement that she never got along with Rex. Was she trying to send out a message to Rex of the pain and anguish he had caused her? The answers to these and many other questions such as the actual nature of their relationship lie with only Ruprekha and Rex. Will the truth if there was one ever come out?
