It was the most crucial moment of her life; it was either now or never. Veera stood up, adjusted her dress and said loud enough to be heard till the back of the hall "mujhe aap sabnu kuch batana hai"
Flashback (one week ago)
As soon as she spotted Baldev entering the house, Veera ran towards him and took his hands in hers. She so badly wanted to share her happiest news with the entire world. After years and years of endless wait, her Beeji had accepted her!! Who better than Baldev to share this with..
"Baldev tujhe pata hai, aaj meri beeji ne mennu gale se lagaya! Kaha ki aaj se main unki beti hoon..mennu lohri tak gaake sunayi..main bohot khush hoon! Bohot zyada! Barson ke intezaar ke baad mennu maa ka pyar mila!" she squealed and threw her arms around him and then bit her tongue..uh oh !watch out Veera..
She was surprised when he didn't hug her back. "ki hoya Baldeva? Tu pareshan hai?" she recognized his unusually somber mood; his regular mischievous expression was missing and instead he looked lost.
"main bhi tere liye bohot khush hoon Veerakdi" he touched her cheek and a forced smile came upon his face.
"tu bata na mennu, hua kya hai? Bol" Veera persisted.
"yahan nahi kahin aur chalte hain" he replied.
They reached the farm lands where no one would be able to disturb them for a while. "ab bata kya hua? Teri beeji ne kuch kaha tujhe? Doston se jhagda hua?"
"aaj mera, mere papaji de naal bohot bada jhagda hoya..aur-"
"aur?"
"aur unhone bola ki-unhone mennu-" a stray tear escaped his left eye.
"tu ro raha hai?? Kya baat hai? Mennu bata.." she said soothingly.
"aaj mennu pata chala ki papaji mere apne papaji nahi hai..main unka khoon nahi hoon.." Veera was too horrified to react. How similar their life stories were!
"meri beeji bhi meri apni nahi hai Veera..unhone mennu godh liya hai kyon ki unhe ek beta chahiye tha.."
Amidst tearless sobs, he explained her how Bansuri's obsession with begetting a son had prompted her to kill her first child, a girl; right after she was born. And a boy child was easily arranged before any could get wind of her cruel deed. Balwant couldn't put up an ounce of protest before his monster of a wife. he was scared of her wrath.
"yeh kya ho gaya Baldeva..hum, hum dono ki zindagi bilkul ek jaisi hai..bilkul same" Veera's throat got thick. She felt her eyes tearing up.
Together they cried for the fate that had befallen on them and the common factor that bound their lives. Veera placed his head on her lap and stroked his rough hair. A tear drop fell on his cheek and he sat up.
"tere liye aaj inna vadda din tha aur maine sab bigad diya..mennu maaf karde Veera" Baldev said.
"chup kar..tu agar mera dard baant sakta hai toh mennu bhi tera dard baant ne ka haq hai..maafi na maang tu" she ordered.
"tu waada kar yeh gal tu kisi nu nahi batayegi..kisi ko bhi nahi.." he extended a hand.
"pakka waada" she pinched herself in the neck signifying a never breaking promise.
As she headed home, she felt lighter and heavier; both at same time. Heavier due to the secret that she carried in her heart and light because she had let some barriers break today..Baldev had shared the most significant piece of his life with her, that meant he trusted her.. and that in turn could mean-
She was home and she stopped that thought in its way before it could reach a conclusion.
All day his gloomy expression kept appearing in her mind and it wasn't long before she finally understood. Somewhere during those cat fights and arguments, those challenges and mischief, she had lost her heart to him. And their similar destiny was not the only deciding factor.
She had to confess..tell him before it was too late. But she decided to wait until the day of Sarpanch election results; the results were too important for Baldev. It had been his dream since so long and now she shared his dreams too. There were 5 more days left. She would stand by him and cheer for him when they declare him the next sarpanch.
5 days passed too slowly and it was early morning when her sister in law knocked on her bed room door. "Gunjan bhabhi..aayiye na" Veera said.
"Veera..aaj main tujhse kuch maangne aayi hoon..dekh mana mat karna" she lowered her head as if she was guilty of something.
"aap kuch bhi maang sakti hain bhabhi..main mana nahi karooongi..batayiye" Veera asked.
"aaj main tujhse tere Veerji ki khushiyan maangne aayi hoon Veera..mere Ranvi nu jitade is chunav me..usko haarne mat de..usko haarne mat de.." Gunjan said with folded hands.
"aap kya bol rahi hain bhabhi? Main kya kar sakti hoon isme?" she was confused.
"aaj subah main apne papaji ke ghar gayi thi aur maine unhe kehte hue suna ki, mere Ranvi ko bohot kam vote mile hain is chunav me..woh haar chuka hai..
jab use yeh gal poore gaon ke saamne batayi jaayegi, woh-woh toot jaayega Veera..tere Veer nu bohot vaddi chot pohonchegi..use bachale Veera..bachale..uska sapna mat tootne de.." Gunjan pleaded.
When Veera didn't react, she continued, "bachpan se aaj tak Ranvi ne tere liye kitna kuch kiya hai..ab teri baari hai..kaise bhi karke chunav ka faisla badal de Veera.." she wailed.
"main sochoongi..aap shant ho jaayiye bhabhi" Veera could say only this much.
Gunjan left mumbling something about work in kitchen but Veera's mind was in quandary. Ice cold water had been thrown on her surging emotions. Gunjan's words rang clear in her mind. "what have you done for your brother?"
She closed her eyes and memories of their childhood appeared in her mind. Ranvi feeding her, Ranvi tying her hair, Ranvi taking her to school, Ranvi facing a tiger for her.. it had always been him doing something for her and not the other way round. Was it selfishness to place one's happiness before others? If yes, then she had been selfish all her life.
The images continued and progressed to the most recent time, when the person in them began to change. Baldev saving her from goons..Baldev comforting her when she came to know the truth of her birth..Baldev putting the red dupatta on her..
More on the score of selfishness..she needed to choose between two people and choosing either of them meant losing another. How did anyone choose between heart and its beat? Breathing or not breathing?
After crying for more than an hour a dastardly plan struck her mind and she couldn't chase the thought away. There was only one way left.
End of Flash back (present)
"mennu aap sabko ek raaz batana hai..jo-jo is chunav ke liye vadda maayne rakhta hai" Veera said. She spotted Baldev at the front row turning in her direction with a questioning look. She was going to be guilty of whatever pain that was coming his way. She closed her eyes for a second and then advanced to the podium.
She felt too small as she stood in front of the mike and began her words. "pritampura wasiyon, is chunav ka jo bhi failsla ho woh galat hoga..kyon ki, kyon ki chunav me khade do aadmiyon me se ek is pind ka hai hi nahi!"
There was a loud murmur in the audience at her big revelation. Baldev looked crestfallen. She prayed god to punish her the worst way possible.
"yeh-yeh Baldev..Balwant taaya ji ka apna beta nahi hai! Unka khoon nahi hai..aap ko meri baat par yakeen na ho toh aap iski beeji se pooch leejiye..aap hi batayiye aisa aadmi is pind da sarpanch kaise ban sakta hai?? is pind ka sarpanch koi ban sakta hai toh woh hai sirf mere Veer ji..Ranvijay Singh!!" she almost screamed.
The audience had turned fully unruly and some were shouting at the top of their voices. She looked at Baldev and he raised a hand at her as if trying to stop her and then let it fall. He looked more hurt than words could describe..
Now it was time for carrying out the next part of her plan. She swallowed the pill she had been carrying in her hand. Her work was done. Whatever her Veer ji had done for her was so vast that it couldn't be compensated in one birth, but she had tried. She tried her best to pay him back. At the same time she had hurt Baldev, the man she had loved and who loved her. Hurting him meant hurting herself, betraying him was equivalent to betraying her own soul.
She had punished herself. The poisonous pill took its effect in two minutes and her lifeless body fell on the dais, where just few minutes ago she had been standing.
Ever since Veera's flat out rejection of Baldev, despite the fact that he had won all the challenges, Baldev and Veera's relationship was filled with tension. They barely spoke to each other now.
Veera (thinking to herself): Mainu ki farkh padta hai? Main toh khush hoon ki Baldev ab mainu tang nahin karta."
("Why should I care? I am happy that Baldev doesn't trouble me anymore.")
Despite this, Veera didn't know why she felt unhappy. Suddenly Veera's phone began to ring. It was Amrit.
Veera: "Amrit, kaisi hai tu?"
("How are you Amrit?")
Amrit: "Main toh theekh hoon. Waise hum tere pind tujhse milne aane waale hai. Bas 15 minute mein aajayenge."
("I'm fine. By the way, we are coming to visit you today. We will be there in 15 minutes.")
Veera was taken by surprise.
Veera: "Kya? Aur yeh tu mujhe ab bata rahi hai? Aur hum matlab? Aur kaun kaun aa rahe hai?"
("What? And you are telling me this now? And what do you mean by we? Who else is coming?")
Amrit: "Hamari poori college ki gang: Samrat, Preet, Romi, aur Simmi."
("Our whole college gang: Samrat, Preet, Romi, and Simmi.")
Veera smiled. It had been so long since she had last seen her friends. Once Veera put the phone down, she went and told Ranvi and Ratan everything. They were happy to have Veera's friends visit them.
15 minutes later...
Baldev was at the tea stall with Billa and Jaggi. He was back to being his old, angry self, using force with anyone who didn't do or listen to what he asked them to do. Billa and Jaggi were worried for their paaji.
Jaggi: "Paaji, thand rakho. Itna gussa aapke liye accha nahin hai. Uss Veera ko pata nahin hai ki usne kitni badi galti ki hai aapko inkaar kar ke."
("Brother, calm down. This much anger is not good for you. That Veera has no idea what a big mistake she is making by rejecting you.")
Baldev: "Chad mainu! Uss Veera ka naam bhi mat lena."
("Leave me alone! Don't take that Veera's name.")
Just then Baldev saw a jeep arrive with a group of people. Baldev thought they looked familiar. It was only when they got out of the jeep and were greeted by Veera, did he realize and remember that they are Veera's friends. That was when Baldev saw Veera there happily greeting them.
Although Baldev was angry and upset with Veera, he could still never hate Veera. Upon seeing Veera, Baldev's heart skipped a beat, seeing how pretty she looked in the kurti and jeans she had on.
Amrit saw Baldev then and walked towards him.
Amrit: "Hi Baldev, pehchana? Main Veera ki dost. Hum sab pichli baar mile the."
("Hi Baldev, remember me? I'm Veera's friend. We had met last time.")
Baldev smiled politely.
Baldev: "Haan haan, mainu tum sab ko yaad hai."
("Yes, yes, I remember all of you.")
That's when one of Veera's friends, Preet, got an idea for a game.
Preet: "Hey guys, chalo hum spin the bottle khelte hai. Baldev aap aur aapke dost bhi khel sakte hai hamare saath."
("Hey guys, let's play spin the bottle. Baldev, you and your friends can join us.")
Veera who had been happy till now stood still, feeling awkward when Preet invited Baldev. Veera tried to protest, and even Baldev had no interest since it would mean that he would have to see and talk to Veera. But finally, Amrit convinced them both to play.
They started to play spin the bottle. First, the bottle pointed towards Jaggi, who was dared to dress like a girl. Baldev and Veera couldn't help but laugh, seeing Jaggi dressed up like a girl. Baldev glanced at Veera then, who also happened to look at him then. Their eyes locked for just a few seconds, and then Veera looked away.
The bottle was spun again, and this time it landed on Baldev.
Amrit (with a mischievious grin): "Baldev, tumhe Preet ko kiss karna hoga."
("Baldev, you have to kiss Preet.")
Veera looked shocked, and Baldev was also taken by surprise.
Baldev: "K..Kya? Main shareef munda hoon. Aise kisi ladki ko pappi nahin de sakta."
("W..What? I am a decent guy. I can't just give any girl a kiss like that.")
The rest of Veera's friends, including Amrit didn't agree.
Preet began to step closer to Baldev and leaned down ready to kiss him.
Preet: "Chalo na Baldev. Bas ek khel hi toh hai. Ek kiss se kya hota hai?"
("Come on Baldev. It's just a game. What happens with a small kiss?")
Baldev felt uncomfortable with Preet getting so close to him. Veera couldn't help but feel jealous, and angry. Just as Preet was about to kiss Baldev, Veera screamed out.
Veera: "Bas!"
("Enough!")
Everyone, including Baldev looked at Veera stunned. Without thinking Veera, went and grabbed Baldev's arm and pulled him to the side.
Baldev: "Veera, tenu kya hua?"
("Veera, what happened to you?")
Veera: "Mainu ki hua? Tujhe kya hua? Tu uss Preet ko kaise kiss kar sakta hai. Tu sirf mere saath..."
("What happened to me? More like what happened to you? How can you kiss Preet. Only you and I can...")
Before Veera could complete her sentence, she realized what she was about to say. Baldev also noticed and began to smile.
Baldev (with a smile): "Tu kya? Bol na?"
("You what? Tell me?")
Veera kept quiet and was about to leave when Baldev grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him. Veera's face was just inches away from Baldev.
Baldev: "Mainu mera jawaab mil gaya Veera."
("I have got my answer Veera.")
SHARING IS CARING..
The sky loomed darker and darker with signs of the upcoming storm..
No one was about except one lone figure, who sat by the now dark fields, staring up at the thunder flashing sky..
Baldev seeped from the alcohol bottle,as pain gnawed at his senses..
Numerous broken bottles were fallen in a heap close by him..And yet went on getting drunk..Trying to drown his pain and insult in the intoxicating drink..But to no avail..
Today he had faced to bitterest realities in his life..
Primarily he had lost the Sarpaanch election to Ranvi, and that also by a huge insulting margin..
Secondly, and strangely the most painful realization was when he overheard Veera talking to her friend on phone..She had been saying that she had been deliberately acting to be in love with him,to get rid of him for good..!
Rage had took over his entire being, blinding his vision, when he had walked upto a surprised Veera and declared he officially had broken up with her.And then pain tore him apart,at the sight of jubilation on her face, that she tried to hide instantaneously, but it did not escape his razor shape eyes.
With a sneer he took another long sip from the bottle,as the thunder sound became louder..
It seemed God was reflecting the turbulence of pain in him through the weather.
How could Veera do this to him?!!
He closed his eyes to the strange pain that clogged his brain and being.
His nostrils flared as he got flashbacks of the beautiful times he had spent with her,and now he had to face the bitter reality that it was all a dream..A DREAM!!!A nightmare more like it!His heart squeezed painfully once again.
Angrily he wiped off a stray tear that had appeared at the corner of his eyes, and again took a long swig from his alcohol bottle.
Why the hell wasn't he getting drunk senseless?!!By now he should be drunk senseless shouldn't he?!
He stared into the bottle in confusion, before he took another swig from it.
Suddenly a subtle noise from behind him made his ears perk up in alertness.
Was he hallucinating or was that the sound of anklets tinkling..?!He could smell a very familiar sweet scent, that teased at his nostrils..He was hallucinating for sure!!!
How could anyone or least of all She be out in this dark stormy night?!!
The noise stopped just behind him..
And suddenly Baldev had a thought,as his eyes widened in realization.
He had heard of ghosts roaming around in stormy nights..Could it be..
He gulped down a knot of discomfort,as goosebumps rose at the back of his neck..
Was he sitting under some haunted tree?!
He was even afraid to look up..
Strong wind whistled at the leaves of nearby trees, and made the apparition's ornament jingle..
What was it he was supposed to pray when such encounters took place,to save himself..?
He cursed his stupidity for sending Billa and Jaggi away..!Now if they were here with him then-..
"Baldeva..?"He went rigid as he felt the thing's hand on his shoulder..
Oh God what should he do?!Should he scream for help?!
"Baldeva suun?!
[Baldeva listen?!]"The thing squeezed harder, and suddenly Baldev felt a familiar warmth seep in though his shirt..
This only happened to him whenever She touched him..!
Instantly he whirled round, and right there Veera was standing, with the most innocent guilty look on her face.
Baldev stood up within seconds,as rage took over his entire being. He hated the way his heart started beating whenever she came close to him, even now!
He took a step back putting some distance between himself and her..
"Tu iththe kiu ayi hai?!Mere jale pe namak chirak ne?!
[Why did you come here?!To sprinkle salt on my wound?!]"He gritted out through angry clenched teeth.
Veera shook her head, and took another step towards him extending her hand towards him..
Baldev instantly stepped back, but suddenly he noticed a wrapped up box in her extended hand..
"Tere liye cake layi thi main..
[I had brought cake for you..]"She said in a hesitant small voice.
Instantly his fury rose by leaps and bounds..
"Cake?Kiu?!Mere haar ki jashn manane ke liye?!!
[Cake? Why?!To celebrate my failure?!!]"He gritted out,his anger nearly blinding him.
"Baldeva tu mainu galat samajh rahi hai-..
[Baldeva you are getting me wrong-..]"Veera tried to hold his arm,but instantly Baldev pushed her away and turned to leave..
"OUCH!!!"
Her exclamation of pain, made him stop in his track, and instantly turn towards her.
"Veera tu thik hai na?!
[Veera are you alright?!]"
Slowly she raised her face to stare at him,and the sight that greeted him would have made him burst into laughter,if he was not so worried and also in a sour mood..
The packet of cake with the cake in it was now destroyed,as Veera had fallen flat on it..And the entire chocolate cream was now smeared on Veera's face.
He quickly went and sat close to her where she had fallen onto the ground.
The thunder light flashed again giving him a glimpse of her wobbly lips and glazy eyes.
His heart squeezed as he realized she was at the brink of tears.
"Mainu..mainu maaf karde Veera..!Tu..tu ro maat!Tainu bauhot dard ho rahi hai ki?
[Forgive..Forgive me Veera..!Don't..Don't cry!You are in lots of pain, are you?]"
Baldev was not sure how to reassure her,and yet at the same time he did not know why,but he felt like cuddling her in his arms and protecting her..
Her lips wobbled dangerously again, and baldev felt his hear squeeze once again.
"Cake..Pura cake kharaab ho gaya!Main tere liye kinne pyaar se layi thi-..
[Cake..The whole cake has been destroyed!I brought this for with s much love-..]"She suddenly drifted off, when she realized what she was saying..
A warm glow started spreading through Baldev's insides at her words.Forgotten were his earlier rage and fury at her..
"Mera matlab..Matalb tainu khilane ke liye-..
[I mean..I mean to feed you-..]"She looked away..
Suddenly Baldev pulled her into his lap, surprising her.
"Baldeva tu ki-..
[Baldeva what are you-..]"
Veera drifted off,as Baldev suddenly swept a finger across her cream mashed cheek, and looking into her eyes,he placed the finger into his mouth..Gently sucking the chocolate cream..
Veera felt her heart thud crazily at the act,and her body warmed up fast..
And then he had taken another another dollop of cream off her face, and extended the finger to her mouth.
Questioningly she looked at him, when he gave his magical seductive smile at her, taking her breath away with the warmth and beauty of it.
"Mere liye layi hai to kya sirf main hi khaunga?!Mil baatke khate hai..!Wo angreji main kehte hai na..Sha..Shaaring-..
[You have brought it for me,so does it mean only I will eat?!Let's share it..!What is it called in English..Sha..Shaaring-..]"
Veera took his finger in her mouth and gently sucked the cream away with erotic sweeping movements of her tongue and lips.
"Sharing is caring.."She said softly, looking into his eyes, that reflected the fire burning in his..
Thunder loomed closer, and suddenly it seemed both were trapped in a spell.
And before Veera could blink,Baldev had lowered his face to hers, and was licking away the cream smeared across her face..
And then finally when his lips claimed hers,Veera felt her heart burst with the joy of it.As his firm male lips moved over hers, she kissed him back with all the pent up emotions within her..
He tasted of heat, warmth, chocolate, and something that tasted even more delicious..He tasted of love..
As his lips sucked and nibbled and kissed her mouth with intense passion, the sky burst open and drowned them in its torrential rain, and yet they went on kissing..
Veera suddenly realized that she really cared for this BEWAKOOF(STUPID) of hers...Who only did stupid things to impress her..And this time she truly realized, she cared a lot for him..Maybe she had fallen in love with him..
His lips moved hungrily than ever on hers, and he pulled her closer to his hard body, making her moan out,as she felt her wet rain soaked body plaster to his wet one..
Today Veera had finally understood the meaning of the saying SHARING IS CARING..And all thanks to her Baldeva..Yes only HER Baldeva..
She hugged him back tight, and returned his kiss with afresh eagerness..After all they were sharing their first kiss..And SHARING IS CARING..
Hai ki nai?!!😉😈
She wrapped her sweater a little more tightly around her as the cold grew harsher by the minute. These are the moments when one craves for a companion. Someone warm, someone to wrap you in their cozy arms. Someone to share the sleepless nights with..
She went to her balcony and noticed the stars twinkling in the serene sky. Even they seemed to have pairs among them. It was so quaint outside that she felt the strange need for a mid night walk.
Her someone' was never coming back. She had hurt him irreparably. She had called him an idiot, a person unfit for any sort of affection from a girl like her. Despite her words he kept coming back and she had had enough. On a same night like this, two years ago she had asked him to go to hell and he had gone; not to be seen ever again.
For days, months and now years, she had felt guilty, immensely, extremely guilty but couldn't identify with her own feelings. If god ever felt compassionate and brought him back, she would never let him go again. She'll keep him locked in her heart forever.
She carefully avoided the sharp rocks that lined the street but missed one. She hit her foot on it and fell face down on the street. In the semi darkness, a hand came forward to help her. She let out a gasp seeing the silhouette of that figure. Unmistakably it was him! That unruly hair, those strong biceps..
"Veera" he uttered and she pinched herself. Was he for real? Or had she hit her head very badly when she fell??
There was no feeling in his voice. She fished out her phone from the coat pocket and flashed its light on him. His dear face hadn't changed a bit in all these years. And then he smiled. Oh lord, how much she missed him!!
"kahan chala gaya tha mennu chad ke?" She put her arms around him with a dire need and he gladly hugged her back. Their embrace lasted for a long time until the tiny drops of rain began to adorn the earth. He cradled her face in both hands and looked into her eyes. She could not bear that deep gaze and lowered her eyes in womanly embarrassment.
The rain was adding a perfect background score to the song her heart was singing. Fire blazed through her as he kissed her neck and continued farther down her back.
"Baldev.." she whispered his name. No words were needed and no explanations were required. The thirst that had plagued her since eternity was finally quenched. She kissed him back with all energy she could put in and he did the same.
"main tumse bohot pyar karti hoon" she said in his ears and he said "main bhi"
It was a blessed night. The stars and the gods had finally decided to unite her with the one who was meant for her. She wished this night would never end. The rain got harder and their love reached its zenith until she couldn't breathe.. He was everywhere and everything else faded from her mind. She closed her eyes.
She had a feeling that she was asleep from a very long time when she woke up. Veera looked around and saw that it was morning. She was on her bed in her room. The signs of the last night's rain still flowed on the road outside and her foot hurt as she placed a step on the floor. Was it just a dream or had he really come? Perhaps she would never know.
