Ekta Kapoor's new show for Star Plus has been making news for a variety of reasons. It marks the comeback of Drashti Dhami on TV after Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani. The show will also have Shaleen Malhotra and Laksh Lalwani. As per reports, the story is a combo of Subhash Ghai's Pardes and Manju Kapur's novel, The Immigrant. It seems Shaleen will play the role of Arjun essayed by Shah Rukh Khan in Pardes while Laksh Lalwani's Veer will be modeled on Apurva Agnihotri's role of a rich spoilt brat. A source told us, "Veteran actress Surekha Sikri has also been roped in for the show. She will play the role of a strong matriarch. Surekha will be seen as Shaleen Malhotra's grandmother on the show. The makers were looking for a powerhouse actress and she was the perfect fit."

The 71-year-old actress earned laurels for her portrayal of Kalyani on Balika Vadhu. Manju Kapur's The Immigrant deals with the issues faced by young women who marry into NRI families. From the small cultural adjustments to the pressures of delivering on the personal and professional front, they have a lot to deal with. Drashti's character will be inspired by that of Nina Batra in the novel. She has played a Punjabi kudi before in Geet Sabse Huyi Parayi. Star Plus is coming up with three shows - Naamkaran that replaces Diya Aur Baati Hum, Ekta Kapoor's Pardes and a new one featuring Kunal Karan Kapoor and Shrenu Parikh.
