Using popular music in soaps is a very common phenomenon!
The audiences connect to the song and that adds to the experience of the sequence. It would be very difficult for shows to create songs for every situation although that would be the ideal situation.

For a period show, the challenge is huge!

Even if you record songs fresh, they would still be made in the present and not actually back then. It would be next to impossible for them to find music that actually belonged to that period, i.e even the 1940s.

Under the circumstances, they have composed one theme song and have used a ghazal in one sequence. Even the ghazal was not recorded back in the 1940s. So, technically it does not belong to the period. It is just that it has the period feel and since many of us are not familiar with it, we don't realize that it does not truly belong to the era...!

The creatives have used film songs from films set in a period that more or less matches the period of the show. The idea is if fresh songs can be composed, then why not popular songs actually composed for the period? You cannot completely fault them for that!

While I would personally like to see the use of ghazals and folk songs, there is a large audience that enjoys the use of popular film songs. So long as they don't use contemporary film music, I think we need to give the creatives the benefit of the doubt!

Its not impossible to find songs that is close to the 40's.

One example are the songs of the movie Pareeneta has been composed with the 40's feeling.

Devdas preceded that ..in was set around 1910 or so...technically, if they can use Parineeta, they can use Devdas as well...!

They should...but unfortunately, a large chunk of the audience would find it too slow...that is the truth...they have cater to a broad mix...that is why I say we need to be charitable towards them...!

There are beautiful songs to suit that era. One needs to hav a musical bend of mind with an adequate dose of remixing expertise to use it effectively. The use of a gramophone has already been shown in the jungle sequence. But, nothing can beat an original score and instrumental music! 😃

I agree. They have to keep the broader audience in mind and a lot of them who watch the show just for entertainment and do not much care for the period feel would find ghazals too slow and would probably flip channels to something more lively. Besides with the time constraint of daily soaps, it would be unfair to expect them to compose or even remix songs. I think they are doing a good job with the song selections, atleast most of them are set in that era be it kuch na kaho, manmarziyaan or even dola re.

I don't mind when they use filmy songs and when now they are using most songs from the films which are period films..so that's also suits,ya ghazals, and folk music will be a good option but i think they can use music of that era too like from 1940 onwards ,i mean we have a treasure of soulful music of golden era..which can give us a feel of that period also,so i would prefer that they should use new as well as old era music too.😊

There are plenty of songs of that era but how far it is apt for the situation is more important.

I think some of the songs from movies

Jodha Akbar
1947 a love story
Ashoka
Lootera etc can be used in the show. In fact they have been used some among these. My personal favorite is " monta re "song from Lootera. I think it will suit the era. But I think its a folk song,I dont know wether its suitable for royalties
