Part 7: The updates depend on the comments.

Arunuday brought the tray up to his armchair with his usual stealth.

Indravardhan put down his newspaper: Well?

Arunuday: Two letters sir, one to a Mrs. Sangeeta Bhatti and one to Mrs. Seeta Singh.

Indravardhan crumped up his paper: Those are just her friends. Who else did she write to?

Arunuday: No one else sir, her whole family is right here in town. Should I open these and read them to you, Ranaji?

Indravardhan, annoyed: No, that would not be right. Take them away and mail them.

Ranaji got up and paced the hallway. Slowly, Badi Rani Maa and others came down to the breakfast table.

Everyone was waiting. Rani Gayatri Devi was taking her sweet time getting up this morning to join everyone. With no glance to spare on him, Gayatri leisurely came yawning with her new pal in tow - Rani Swarna.

BRM: This is no time to come in! Breakfast is at 8 am sharp. Must you break EVERY rule in this palace!?

Gayatri sat down at end of the long table to take the other main position - farthest from him.

She said apologetically: It seems that fate has decided that I must, BRM. Far too many rules, I can't decide which to break next (she sighed in mock frustration).

BRM shook in anger in her chair as Raj Mata smirked and bit into her first niwala.

Agitated, Indravardhan inquired: Good morning, Raniji, sleep well?

Gayatri ignored him.

Indravardhan smashed his fist on the table, everyone jumped except Gayatri: I asked a question!

Gayatri: I am afraid I can only answer one question before my morning tea and I already answered BRM's. Bhaiya, can you bring my tea please?

A smiling servant rushed to do her bidding.

She quietly took a sip as everyone watched the tension brew at both ends of the table.

Gayatri smiled: It is perfect, thank you Bhaiya.

The servant bowed and stepped back.

Ranaji: Answer now then.

Gayatri: No. I must finished my tea. Don't hold your breaths everyone, I do not like being watched while I eat or drink.

Everyone got back to their business.

Ranaji shoved away his food and left. He was outside with his horses when she came by the stables.

Ranaji: What now!?

Gayatri: I want to ride.

Ranaji: What!?

Gayatri: I want to learn horse riding. Buy me the right attire.

He smirked now. Traditional Gayatri will be scandalized when she sees what what it takes to ride horses.

Ranaji teased: You have to wear pants for that. Should I buy you pants?

Gayatri: A size small, please. Same for the shirt. I expect it by tomorrow morning.

She left, leaving Ranaji and the stable boy gaping.

In the next few weeks, nothing unusual came up in searching through her mail. Feeling already guilty about spying, Ranaji finally told Arunuday to stop bring him Gayatri's correspondence.

So, there was no man, he thought with relief.

One morning, during what had become their usual ride through the parks much to BRM's anger, Ranaji thought he would gloat and call out Gayatri's bluff.

Ranaji: So there is no one, is there?

Gayatri: Excuse me?

Ranaji: Your lover, he doesn't exist, I know.

Gayatri: A couple of weeks of mail checking told you that? You are so predictable.

Ranaji grew red: Predictable!?

Gayatri: Yes, predictable. You didn't think I would write to him right after telling you I have someone in mind, did you? And mail checking, that was low, even for you.

Ranaji was humiliated: Protecting my honor is my responsibility. My rani cannot have an affair with another man!!!

Gayatri: Firstly, stop putting your honor on my back, I am not attached to your honor no matter what BRM says. Second, stop shouting or someone will hear you. Then, this fragile royal honor of your family's that keep resurrecting itself after every little mistake of mine kills it, will be dead again. And BRM will not have it.

Ranaji: Whether you like it or not, my honor is your responsibility.

Gayatri, calmly: You just said it was your responsibility. Make up your mind.

Ranaji sputtered angrily: Don't twist my words! You know what I mean.

Gayatri: I am no more your wife than this Arunuday is, you are not my responsibility and neither is your precious honor. Speaking of which, you have no honor. You sold it to my father when you married me to save your hide. Your honor belongs to me now. I own it. And if I want to trample it, I will. That's how it works in business, Ra-na-ji.

Her cutting words made tears threaten the back of his eyes: You are cruel.

Gayatri: No more than you and your family. You want to hear what is cruel? Marrying in a good girl like Swarna to that idiot cousin of yours. How could you let a sweet girl's life go to ruin by marrying off your homosexual cousin? Have you no shame? Marrying for money is one thing, but what you did to her is unforgivable!!!

Ranaji: How they you make such an accusation on my cousin!? Don't you care now about what people will hear? I had no part to play at this wedding. And anyways, what proof do you have to say such things!?

Gayatri: I saw him in bed this morning with his new male servant when I went to look for Swarna. He likes men. He should never have married that poor girl if this is what he wanted. Now I know why Swarna is so sad all that time.

Ranaji was flabbergasted: I don't believe you.

Gayatri: He is still sleeping in there, go and see for yourself.

Ranaji did not need to go so it. What was so infuriating was that Gayatri was right again. He had no doubt if she was able to present the proof right away.

Ranaji: I don't need to see it. It is their private business.

Gayatri: This palace knows no such thing as privacy. The next time your aunt and uncle makes some stupid plan to trip me up, I am going drop this bomb on their faces. Warn them or else they will be very sorry.

Ranaji: I have already warned them. What did they do since?

Gayatri: They are always playing stupid games.

Ranaji: Well, then tell me next time they do something and I will take care of it. But don't shock them like that.

Gayatri: I doubt they don't know.

Ranaji: But they clearly don't want it known. Don't create a fuss.

To his surprise, Gayatri listened and did not burn the house down with that piece of news. She just kept to her duties and seemed in a rather good mood. If she was not taunting him, she was annoying BRM or making changes around that palace that even RM did not take so well sometimes. But she always got her way.

Ranaji was starting to wonder if this girl, who was clearly born to be queen, actually had any feelings for him at all. The only thing she cared about less than his cousin was him. It bothered him constantly that she was probably thinking about some other man this whole time, but Ranaji stopped himself from checking her mail.

Finally, one day they had a visitor...

Ranaji welcomed his distant second cousin to the palace as he came to take his new position as head of the University of Amerkoot's politics and philosophy department.

Zorawar Singh Rathore was a very learned man from Oxford. And Indravardhan would be blind not to see that he was equally handsome and well-mannered. Zorawar hardly had any flaws that Indravardhan knew of. He was well liked by everyone including Chachaji, Chachiji, his cousin, BRM and even RM. As a fairly distant relative, he was no threat and therefore made no enemies.

Indravardhan was glad to see that a man of his caliber was interested in coming and resettling in Amerkoot after studying in London. Ranaji offered him the post right away and asked him stay with them as the palace while he settled on a house. To be honest, he was always a bit jealous of Zorawar. Though not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but this cousin of his was really gifted and could just about make anyone feel inadequate, even the Rana of Amerkoot, just by being himself.

Gayatri came in. Indravadhan was just about to introduce Zorawar when she interrupted him.

Gayatri: Zora, back at last!

Zorwar smiled and nodded: Congratulations on your wedding, Rani Gayatri Devi.

Gayatri made nonchalant hand wave: No formalities. You call me Gayatri, like always.

Ranaji, confused: What?

He looked from "Zora" to Gayatri in alarm. Something was not right.

Gayatri: Zora and I practically grew up together. He's my buddy. Of course, Professor Rathore is all nice and fancy now...!

To Indravardhan's shock, Zorawar blushed.

Zorawar: Your wife was quite the hell raiser in her youth.

Ranaji looked at Gayatri through narrowed eyes: You don't say...I would never have guessed.

Gayatri ignored him and the shocked faces of the family members: Thank you so much for taking my recommendation and agreeing to run the department. This university really needs a helping hand.

Ranaji: You called him!?

Gayatri: Why, yes! It's it wonderful!? How else would Amerkoot attract someone of Zora's caliber? Didn't you have an offer from Delhi University that you turned down for this Zora? You are so sweet.

Zorawar: Yes, I would rather be close to...(he waited a bit too long for Indravardhan's liking) my family.

Don't forget to write to me.
