this was a bit formal to me
i think their relation is a bit formal as well
rajmata wanted to know why he came on a horse
he did not want to tell at first
but bhanu came and told everything
rana then told death always plays hide and seek with him
but it never takes him in its grip
this single statement implied a lot of pain in rana
his mother was worried for him
we now know she has sent him to war half heartedly
so that he can escape from his sorrows
but seemed hid sorrow pain grief follows him always

Yep, their relationship seems formal to me too. They don't seem to share a very close bond.

That dialogue when he said he would have rather died, is very upsetting for a mother to hear, and he didn't say it petulantly he has actually gone to war to be killed, rather than to come back victorious because his wife died early right, he wants to join her.
I think Rajmata cannot reach her son and take him out of his grief but Gayatri will be the one to help him out of this.
