10th Shot - Silences before the Storm
With the diary yet pressed close to her chest , Kalpana gushed to her temporary room & shut the door close. Her chest was shuddering up & down coz of the mighty run & so also her continuous laughter. A few seconds later she opened the door slightly & peeked through the gap to check if Raghav had followed her. She knew he hadn't when she saw the passage leading to her room empty.
"Hmm ... he probably must have given up !" the mini kalpi in her head exclaimed as she twirled around cherishing her victory. Somewhat immitating that action , Kalpana too turned around. That's when she comes face to face with someone ... Someone she recognized , but yet didn't ...it was her own reflection in the mirror.
It was smiling ,the ear to ear smile which she hardly allowed her face to display. It looked happy as if it were never this happy before. It looked free & chirpy completely out of her sphere of responsibilities & restrictions. She couldn't help but notice the slight bounce she had in her walk as she advanced towards the mirror. There was somethin unusual in her face...something pleasantly different. Who would say that she was tired ? Tired after another miserable day at work coz of prem's client...
She paused.
...the same client who was making her life terrible than the terriblestestestest. Her encounters with the wicked man suddenly whooshed by as she saw the smile on her reflection's face slowly wither away.
She hated him ...yes she did !!
Silently placing her diary on the table in front she headed to bed. A weird feeling of joy & warmth from a minute lil corner of her heart kept pricking her the entire night , but she somehow managed to sleep ... Wishing for her life to be as perfect as before.
Buzzz..buzzz..buzzz...buzzz.
The noise disturbed Kalpana's sleep , but for a change that didn't irritate her. Yet snuggling in her bed she reached out to grab her cellphone from her handbag. Fiddling with the zippers of the bag & then through the locks of her phone she finally reached her inbox which flashed the presence of 2 messages. One was Prem's & the other belonged to Rohish ... quickly sitting upstraight she stared at her brother's name. It was almost a week later that she was hearing from him ...unlike always when she would assure his safety by calling his best buddy with whom he was staying. She had thought of giving him some time to realize that his sister's decision was correct & for his own good. Her fingers impatiently fetched the 'read message' button
"I love u Di ... I love u Di ...I love u Di ! U r the best sister in the world ..." her eyes beamed with joy. Those words were like music for her , especially after the day she had slapped him ...for the 1st time in her life. But she was also confused as to how had Rohish's mind changed this suddenly.
"I'm coming home tonight. I want some yummy parathas straight from my sister's kitchen... I'm hungry already !! ;) " she smiled contentedly.
Then opening the message sent by Prem ...
"Kalpi ...kalpi ...kalpi...where are you ? Have been calling you since morning. I've a good news to give...wait wait wait ... Not so easily. I want u to see the good news with ur own eyes. Be ready. Shall pick u up by 2. Byeee"
What could the good news be , she wondered. But then she was also happy as Prem seemed happy. Finally things were falling into place !! Just the way they should be ... Everything under her control !
These would have been the 1st ever positive words that she heard ever since Raghav Singhaniya was in her life. That name reminded her of his early morning rock music as she turned to check what time it was.
The wall clock displayed a generous 12.
What ? How did she sleep this long ? Err...a major correction. How did she sleep this long in that Singhaniya person's noise pollution ? Or was it that he hadnt played the music at all ... No no no ...why would he do so ? With similar questions revolving around her head she walked outside her room.
Everything was creepily quite. If not for the amplified ticking of the clock , Kalpana would have easily believed that the time had stopped. Her eyes automatically tracing its path to the room at the other end of the house. The door was shut & probably locked as well.
Wasn't that another great news ? Not bearing Raghav Singhaniya's early morning list of tantrums ... What else would she want in life ? No RS & her ppl being happy ...it was the best day ever !
But yet ..
She didn't know what it was... for some reason she felt weird. All that silence felt weird ... were they the silences before the storm ?
