Chapter 19
Priya sat on the satee, tears streaming down her face, staring out of the window, lost in thought, her memories taking her to the first time Prem told her that he loved her seven years ago.
Priya thanks the waiter as he pulls out the chair for her, she looks at prem with a smile and says, "where is Ragav? Is he running late?" Prem looks at Priya, hiding his anxiety with a smile and says, "Ragav is not joining us for dinner." Seeing the confusion in her expression he mentally curses why did they always do everything together... The three musketeers... He thinks in frustration... Then adds, "I did not inform him. I wanted it to be just the two of us."
Prem sits in the car, watching the rain fall, his heart crying out over her rejection just as it had cried the first time she rejected him. His voice filled with pain, he calls out in agony, "oh Priya," as his mind races back in time like it was just yesterday... "I am sorry Prem. I am not interested in a relationship at present. I want no distractions when I pursue my career... And I am not interested in moving to India." Priya says. Sighing she continues, "I wish you all the best and I hope our friendship will not be affected."
Staring out the windscreen prem recollects the shock he felt nearly two years ago. He had come to London for some work and could not wait to see Priya in person again. His heart hammering away, hoping that their friendship would bloom towards love. His world had come crashing down when instead he found out that Ragav and Priya were dating. He would never forget that dreaded night. During dinner Priya nervously states that she and Ragav are dating. Shocked, prem looks at them from across the table and says with false happiness, "how? When?" Ragav shrugs and says, "no idea. It just happened. It is not like we are in love or anything. I think it is a natural progression of our friendship and with the amount of time we have been spending together." Smiling Priya adds, "true... In fact the beautiful thing is we know one another and our relationship will not affect our career goals."
Prem stares in disbelief, thinking, "they don't love each other! Huh! What the hell! I love her, but she won't consider me because it will disrupt her career goals." He says, "let me see if I have understood correctly. You two are in a relationship because it will not affect your career. You know one another, hence affection, respect and trust is present in ur relationship, but you are not in love with one another." Frowning he continues, "don't you think love, passion is important in a relationship." Both Priya and Ragav reply in unison, "no." They look towards one another smile and Ragav continues, "being in love, passion will just cause interferences and problems. The important thing in a relationship is mutual affection, trust and friendship and we do love each other... Just not in love with each other."
Ragav sits on the sofa staring into the empty fireplace of his living room, sipping his whisky, lost in thought. Hearing the thunder, his memories race to another night. Awoke two years ago... A night just like this one... A combination of thunder, lightening and rain. He remembers...
Knock knock... Knock knock. Frowning at the disturbance, Ragav looks at the wall clock. The time reads thee am. Surprised for he did not realize how late it was, he closes the file he is working on and goes to open the door wondering if it is Prem. Prem walks in all drenched from the rain, stuttering as he tries to keep steady. Ragav quickly grabs hold of him before he falls over. Looking into his blood shot eyes, he accuses, "you are as drunk as a wheel barrow." Confused Ragav continues, "why?"
Ragav heads out of the room once he sees that Prem is settled in bed. Prem calls out, "I love her. I love her very much... She rejects me because I don't fit in her plans... Damn you. You don't even love her! I love her very..." And falls asleep. Ragav stands there for some moments... Shocked over what he just heard. The next day Ragav behaved like nothing had happened and thanked the Lord that Prem had no recollection of their of his outburst last night.
The phone rings, breaking Ragav from the spell of his memories. He answers his phone and prem asks from the other end, "are you home yet?" Ragav replies, "yes." Prem continues, "will be there soon."
While waiting for Prem to come over, Ragav goes back into memory lane... After Prem had left Ragav felt safe enough to delve into what he had observed when the three of them had hung out. He could not deny it that Prem did love Priya... With a sigh he thought, "it was not something Prem would be able to hide successfully." Deep down Ragav knew that Prem would be the better choice for priya for every woman deserved a spouses love. Knowing that he would never fall n love, Ragav decided that night that he would stay away and that eventually he and priya would break up as they drift apart.
He called sammy over and together with the help of his sister Maya they planned on uniting Prem and Priya. Regret eating him alive for he recalled when he had first introduced his best friend Priya to his cousin Prem, she has confided that she was attracted to him. Ragav had thought that Prem would not be interested and hence had dissuaded Priya.
