Chapter 18: A mother's fear

Frowning Kamla maa takes a step towards Kalpi, only to have Pakhi pull her away forcefully to the kitchen saying, "Kamla maa, I am starving. Please make me pancakes for breakfast." Kamla maa looks at Pakhi, dazed, "But Pakhi..." she begins; Pakhi interrupts her with the intention of distracting her and says, "Kamla maa, why haven't you asked why I am here?"

Gauri maa walks towards the kitchen, she stops and she grins at the sight of Ragav and Kalpi asleep on the sofa and wistfully thinks to herself, "Oh to be in love". As she nears the kitchen she hears Kamla and Pakhi talking, she looks back at Ragav and Kalpi and mutters to herself, "They are in so much trouble". She enters the kitchen with the same intention that Pakhi has, to distract Kamla maa from the scene outside and says, "Ooh, what's for breakfast?" she then turns to Pakhi and asks with a smile, "Did you sleep well, beta?" and continues, "Come on let's help Kamla, I am starving."

Kalpi wakes up to the smell of pancakes, stomach rumbling she thinks, "Mmm... yummy", she smiles to herself and tries to get out of bed. She cannot lift herself of the bed... panics... she looks to see why... and what she sees fills her heart with love.

Kalpi looks at Ragav who is resting his head on her chest, facing her, fast asleep. She smiles to herself and recollects that she fell asleep on his lap on the sofa. Her gaze softening with the love she feels for him, as she caresses his hair instinctively, thinking, "Poor baby, what an uncomfortable position to fall asleep in", debating whether to wake him or not. She decides to wake him. With her gaze emanating her love, she caresses his face and says, "Ragav, wake up".

Ragav wakes to the sound of Kalpi, opens his eyes and the first thing he sees is his wife gazing at him with so much love. He smiles contently as his eyes express the depth of his emotions, he takes hold of her hand, the hand that is caressing his face and brings towards his lips and kisses the inside of her wrist. With a smile, he lifts his head off her chest, his eyes expressing his desire and passion for her, he gives her a quick peck on her lips and whispers, "Good morning."

Pakhi glances over at Kalpi and Ragav from the kitchen counter, wondering if she should go and wake them up as Kamla maa is getting anxious. She sees Ragav bend towards Kalpi and kiss her, she turns away, her eyes tearing slightly as she tells herself to be strong and busies herself by helping Gauri maa nad Kamla maa with breakfast.

Kamla ma is lost in thought as she makes breakfast. She is not happy with what she saw when she arrived. Her initial happiness and surprise when she saw Pakhi open the door gave way to disbelief... anger... and settled on fear... a mother's fear, for in front of her for all to see was Ragav and Kalpi asleep together on the sofa. Kalpi's head rested on Ragav's lap and Ragav's head rested on Kalpi's chest, with his hand around her waist, holding her tight; both turned towards each other.

Kamla maa shakes her head and sighs; she cannot say or do much right now because Pakhi and Gauri maa are being very nonchalant about it and have not mentioned anything untoward. It was as if nothing out of the oridinary had taken place. Kamla ma thinks to herself that she will have to speak to Kalpi privately. She continues to make breakfast very loudly, banging dishes in the process, in the hope that the noise will wake Ragav and Kalpi as thinks to herself, "Kalpi cannot stay here... oh Deva my Kalpi is sleeping in Ragav's arms. What if...", too afraid to complete her thought, she closes her eyes, trying to calm her panic.

Kamla ma looks at Pakhi speculatively and wonders why she is not reacting to seeing Kalpi asleep in Ragav's arms. She turns to Pakhi and says, "Pakhi, go wake Kalpi", gives a false smile and continues, "Tell her breakfast is ready." Pakhi smiles at Kamla maa and before she can respond; Kalpi says, "Aai, good morning."
