He sat there thinking what he could do for her, for he definitely wanted to do something special, for no apparent reason. This is how it had been since the time he realized his feelings for her. And with her acceptance, he had finally found someone in his life to indulge, to shower all his love and attention upon. He had been a loner since his father's death, nah his father's murder, Sammy being the only exception to this rule. He had a hard time accepting that he no longer wanted to be alone. He had tried to hold on to his loneliness but it had become increasing difficult with each passing day, till he finally acknowledged the truth to himself and then there was no looking back. Fortunately for him, after the initial hesitation, she had confessed to reciprocating his feelings making him a very happy man after a long long time. This brought him back to his question - What could he do for her? She wouldn't care much for expensive things even if it was he who was gifting her; she had too much self respect for that and if he were to be honest with himself, a tiny bit of insecurity as well. But then he was sure that she would overcome that as soon as she fulfilled her life's aim. So he had decided to let it be. And it was this train of thoughts that gave him the idea.
He made his way for the all important meeting just in time for the appointment and asked the secretary if he could go in. He frowned seeing her reaction and noted she was nervous about something. She requested him to wait for a few minutes and apologized for the delay despite taking an appointment. She went on to explain that she had allowed someone who had been persistently trying to meet her boss since many days to go in and hence the delay. Just then the door to the office opened and they both saw a not so pleased man heading towards his secretary's office. And behind him, he saw her, his Kalpi, her shoulders slumped, eyes watery, walking out of the office with heavy steps, her whole being screaming of dejection she had faced inside. His first instinct was to rush to her and hide her in his embrace, absorbing all her sorrows. He curbed it and let Kalpi leave. His second instinct was anger, directed towards the Principal for treating her like this. He curbed it too, for at the moment that was the right thing to do. His instinctive actions would just harm the prospects of what he had set out to do and make things worse for Kalpi. He was proud of her, really proud of her. He shouldn't have been surprised seeing her here, fighting for justice in whichever way she could, fighting for her aii's dream. She had not given up and he was here to be with her in her fight. With that he turned to the Principal who had been glaring at his secretary all this while, his presence the only thing that spared her from a verbal lashing.
30 minutes later he got up to shake the Principal's hands; happy with the way the meeting had gone. He had managed to get the Head of the college to consider rechecking all the exam papers, and not just the tally but also look into missing papers as well as extra sheets that might have been added by the corrupt examiner. Though the Principal had been reluctant at first worrying about the college's reputation, he was able to convince him stating that the college would be setting a precedent for thinking about student's career rather than the college's reputation. That could be highlighted to earn the college a lot of goodwill effectively countering the harm this excursion would cause. He further hit the target home by stating that he recruited pass outs from the college every year and he wanted to ensure that he wasn't being wrong to someone deserving or giving a job to an undeserving candidate either. Given the misgivings in the results, he would be uncomfortable to continue recruiting from an institute whose results he did not trust. That had sealed the deal.
He walked towards the secretary's cabin, when he saw her inside, thanking the secretary for help and apologizing for putting her on a spot and for not thanking her earlier. The secretary brushed it off stating that the outcome hasn't been favorable to which she replied that she wasn't going to stop trying. His heart swelled once again looking at her determined face. He left before she could notice him. He was sure that once the Principal looked deep into the matter, it would become obvious that Kalpi hadn't failed; she was too brilliant and hard working for that. His mission was accomplished. This would be her step in direction of her dream, of getting herself a mutthi of aasmaan.
He was just glad that he had been able to do something for her.
...to be continued
Note: The fact that the topic of Kalpi's result hasn't been broached was playing on my mind since quite a while and I decided to write about it. Coincidentally the CV's brought up the topic in today's episode; their approach being different and maybe better that what I have written. But then I needed to get this out.
