Is it really the case in India?

Hey Everyone,

So I have a quick question regarding what's shown in the episode in show. As a Cognitive psychology major, I found the electric shock treatment portrayal sort of baffling. I know that it's just a show and they are trying to do this to create more drama. But I was wondering something. I know that Electric shock therapy has been improved a lot and is actually recommended sometimes in catatonic cases of depression or other severe cases of depression when the person is not responsive to any other treatment. The electric shock treatment itself isn't administered unless it's by the consent of the patient and is very safe or the hospital can actually get sued.

So here's my question for the folks that live in India and are familiar with the processes and treatments going on there - is it really how it's shown in the drama? Because the treatment today itself has been evolved so it doesn't hurt like it's shown in the show and they give it in such a way that the patient doesn't yell out in pain - at least here in America.

So, how is it in India? Or any other country for that matter? I am just very curious because I came from India at a young age. Since I am thinking of settling back after I am done with my studies, I want to know some things before hand. What better way to find out than people who live there, right?

We got new law regarding mental patients last year. Electric shocks got banned.
but the problem is money and corruption. when no bad intention is invloved then there is no electric shocks. here neetu has bribed the docs and Kamla is illiterate. i just hope they show Kalpi with some mind.

The doc wanted to fry whatever sane cells were in Guari's head before she could remember who she was & what happened on Neetu's insistence 🤢 That's all I can say right now.

I remember, that while I was in my TYBA, and we have had this topic on myths..
We had clearly discussed all stupid things that people used to do, ...
Moreover in Indian scenerio, illeteracy is one major drawback.. people would prefer going to some sort of babas, and tantriks to get schizophrenia treated.. anyways.. coming the scene.. it is technically banned in India.. But.. yes, for matter of studies and experiments, which involves no danger to any human being, you are allowed to move ahead with consent of the person, but.. whole procedure has to be followed ethically, which takes about a year, to officially get started...!!

Infact use of animals for such purposes is banned, so human toh dur ki baat hai...!

This is serial, they want to show, how far can neetu and sahil go ahead to torture Gauri..??? Slapping her (in last kidnapping scene..) and also make her suffer.. so that's the whole scene was.. keeping aside seriolitic perspective.. nothing of that sort is allowed in India., anymore.. unless u r bribed or corrupted, you may go ahead, but u need to be careful, of no *Imaandaar*, sincere and honest person come to know about it... so it could be carried out in secret..!!

First, thank you for the information!
But see that's what I am asking right here. Why does it have such a bad image? The treatment has improved a lot. Now it's given provided that the patient remains safe and doesn't get hurt like shown. Here I can see that it was for the sake of showing how inhumane Sahil and Neetu could be. But is it band in India because people abuse it? Or is it band because the resources available in India doesn't let this treatment be as painless as it could be just yet? Are they still working to better it, despite the band or have they completely stopped this whole treatment? I am just very curious because Electric shock therapy itself is actually very effective in the treatment for severe depression when all else fail. Many patients have known to be very grateful for that. Doctors still don't know what it is but there are rarely any severe side effects (if done properly) except amnesia of the period of the depression. Why is it band when it could be so effective?

Thank you all for the information and peek into the system itself. It's really interesting to see how Television can use past treatment and manipulate them into using it for the show, without realizing that it's actually creating a false image in people's mind about the treatment. From what I know, it's an effective treatment that may not always be recommended but it's definitely not as bad as shown. It's now safe and proven to be effective in many cases of depression. The patient themselves say so. Creatives should definitely keep these things in mind and show a little bit more realistically. Despite the corruption shown, if the treatment is really band in India then they could have their license evoked and get sued for malpractice.
