yes dey Onam is the harvest festival. It is celebrated in memory of King Mahabali who once ruled over Kerala. Mahabali was known to be a very good ruler and it is said that during his time there was prosperity all around. It was his pride and greed to capture devaloka that send him underground by the 5th incarnation of Lord Vishnu Vamana. While pushing him down Vamana told him to ask a boon.
Mahabali told that he would like to visit his subject once a year. So it is believed that on Thiruonam Star in the month of Chingam Mahabali will visit his subjects.
So in order to tell their king his subjects are still happy people celebrate Onam in a grand way with new clothes, feast, flower carpet ( Pookalam), Onam games etc..
Over the years the festival is highly commercialized with flower carpet competition, shopping season, movie season and instead of Onam games everyone watches movie in TV these days.
