Why is it that we are unable to see women in colors other than a pure white or an evil black? Why does every woman character in every successful television show, need to be either an angel descended or a devil incarnated? Either she is the vamp with the heavy saris and big bindis, that ensures the perpetual misery of the leading pair and their families, out of greed, malice, envy or lust, or she is the compulsive do-gooder, the upholder of her family's values, the problem solver of the extended clan of her dear husband, the pati-vrata wife, the obedient daughter in law, the ever loving mother, and what not?!
Trust me, I have NOTHING against such characters. I love most of them to be frank. But why does it so happen that when a show is made about a lady who is neither purely good, and nor is a villain, that we, the audience find it difficult to accept her? When the male counterparts can get away with it, when they can be as rude or arrogant or abusive as they can be, even while being the main lead, why can't the heroine be such?
I once read an article long ago about how Indian television's male leads can get away with adultery, whereas the female lead gets loathed if such an act is committed.
All I can say is that I hope Star Plus allows this show to see to its proper end, and not simply cancel it by saying, "Sorry buddy, but TRPs run us."
