Not exactly related to the show!

I don't know, if I'm even allowed to make a topic on something which isn't completely and directly related to the show, but, I think, this is the best platform to ask this question.

So, the question is, why do you all watch Indian TV shows? It's not a surprising fact that, Indian shows lack immensely in terms of quality. They're highly illogical and over the top dramatic. Usually aimed at housewives who can watch these shows while doing household chores. But, on India forums, there are many working people and students too. So, why do you all watch these shows, when there are many other great shows with quality content and based on reality are available online? Like, Foreign shows on netflix, Indian web series, etc.

Is it due to 'romance'? I have watched some 1 or 2 Indian TV shows and I watched them solely for the romance. Both were where the leads fall in love after the marriage and I like that kind of romance; 'unexpected'. One was with a significant age gap between the leads, which again, I have a thing for. And, I can hardly find such romance, i.e, 'unexpected' anywhere else. Yes, there are also some korean, turkish, etc shows and they aren't great too but, much better than the Indian shows. So, I do watch them sometimes to satiate my romantic fantasies. But there were hardly days when I did not cringe while watching Indian shows. One was 'Bade acche lagte hain' and the other one is currently on air, ' Guddan tumse na ho payega'. So, I watched BALH because, it started off well and appeared like a fresh mature story and my parents used to watch it initially. Also, I was 13 or 14, and hopelessly romantic at that time and balh wasn't that bad and illogical. As in, it was still bearable. So, that was the reason, I watched it. And, I came across GTNHP accidentally and liked the concept of people from two different generations forced in a marriage. So, thought of giving it a chance. Though, I think, I'll soon discontinue it.

So, I'm genuinely curious as to why people watch Indian shows when there are so many great shows available online? If it's only to satiate the romantic fantasies, there are again many better shows in the romance genre, available online. So, why do people still continue to watch such shows? Because, the audience watch such shows and give the makers great TRPs, they make such shows. That is why, good quality content with a mature storyline and real, relatable characters are not produced on Indian TV as people are happy watching those kind of shows and giving them TRPs. So, even when Indian makers try to come up with a good show, audience fails them. We had good shows in 90s but since then, Indian TV is only deteriorating and if this continues, the Indian TV scenario will never change.

So, a genuine question, why do you watch these shows? (Again, I asked this question here, as I think, this is the best platform to ask it.)

I think it's about perspective, ITV has brought great shows with great content in the past few years but those 'small' shows with 'small' actors are often sidelined by the youth and the majority of the population, thus not getting the attention they deserve or go through a massive change in the script to accommodate the 'TRPs' norms. For me I don't think it's about romance, the last ITV show I really watched was Ek Duje Ke Vaaste and for me it had a lot more to do with the kind of story they could have presented.

Coming back to your question, I think ITV is accessible in the sense I can go on the net and search any episode of any show and will find it in mere seconds. Also, there is the language, I won't deny that some scenes have magic only because of the language that you won't be able to find in foreign shows.

For me these are the two reasons, accessibility and the language! And also the timing like with foreign shows you have to wait a year to know what will happen next, on ITV the gap between a major twist will be a weekend and also you get immersed into a world very easily when a show is airing five days a week.

Hey!
I am Apoorva!

Well that's actually a good question.. keeping in mind the shows that we have nowadays... 😆
I mostly try out both.. see what I like or rather stick with movies... i have also not followed anything that seriously on TV since EDKV.. and before It again for around 2 years I didn't follow anything too much.
And at present I am still stuck on this one.😆
Also in my case favourites also matter.. if my favourites are in a show I might give it a shot... ITV or not.. doesn't matter... I watch it for them.

But what's wrong in trying both.. Netflix... web series and all no matter how good.. it's not that one likes every thing.. it really depends and differs person to person... to each their own.
I usually prefer both.

Hello! I'm Zoya.

Don't worry, you are absolutely allowed to post anything here, see this forum is moderator-less :p

Coming to your question, excellent one! I ask the same question to myself over and over again.

The thing is, partly what Sal said and partly what Apu said both hold true. There is quality content on Indian TV but it gets sidelined for the most part because for some reason I don't comprehend, the masses prefer trash. I wish that good content could get more of its dues.

Having said that, I watch shows from around the world, anything that can hold my interest, language matters not.

I'm still here cause this was one of those niche shows that started off quality but unfortunately fell prey to TRPs and mass appeal.

It's good to see you here and I sure hope to see you again!

Cheers!

Well even I don't know why people watches Indian shows. But there are some really good shows on ITV. ITV lies in extremities. A show, if it's bad it will be too bad, And if it is good it raises the bar too high. But in the second category, only a small number of shows exist. In my case, I watched EDKV after it went off air and it was a classy drama, though bit boring sometimes. And every show being infinite is one of the reason of producing bad shows and every show starts lacking content after a point of time. Even EDKV may also have been turned bad if it hadn't gone off air. Going off air is sometimes a blessing, and there are many examples in ITV. And in my case nowadays I only watch RadhaKrishn & Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai which are poles apart from the typical Indian Dramas. But the shows mentioned are highly underrated because of the waste content over shadowing it. Shows which keeps it's content constant after 100 episodes are shows which deserve to be infinite category. Otherwise recycling of ideas kill any show.
