Mandy dear!!!!
Only YOU! Only you would prompt me to come back after weeks of staying away.
The thing is, you have an impeccable ability to craft the story in a moving manner. I was glued to to each and every word you wrote. And this piece gave me goosebumps, just like every other piece you have written.
Every para, introduced a new turn in an absolute sequential order, not leaving space for loopholes.
HOW I WISH THIS HAPPENS IN THE SHOW AS WELL.
AND I IMAGINED THE WHOLE SCENE, EVERYTHING.
YOU GAVE LIFE TO EACH CHARACTER.
Everything they spoke- verbally, non verbally, the subtle setup, everything was picturized beautifully.
Spellbound, completely. ❤️

Love,
Yagneshri

Part 3 - "I Choose You!"

Suman watched Shravan's retreating back as he walked out of Ramnath's study. She stood there dazed. She didn't know what reaction she had expected from him, but maybe this had not been it? She knew that he was now aware of what had happened, that it had not been her choice to stay away from him, but what circumstances had forced her to do. She took a step towards the door, and then stopped in her tracks. She suddenly remembered something Shravan had said during his conversation with his Father.

"Maybe I would have even chosen you...like she chose her family over me!"

Shravan thought that she had chosen her family over him. Is that the reason why he was angry with her? Or is it because she had said Yes to Aditya? But he knew why she yes. "Yes Sumo, he KNOWS why you said yes. But emotions are rarely logical. Can't you understand he's hurt?" she asked herself. She started to walk behind him and then stopped. In the mood he was in, would he even listen to her? But she had to at least try.

She walked out the door and looked down the corridor and Shravan was nowhere to be seen. She started to walk to the hall and then stealthily went up the stairs to Shravan's room. The door was closed and she thought of knocking but instead slowly opened the door. She stepped into the room tentatively and walked further into the room. She looked around and was not able to see anyone. The shutters of the room were down, so the room only had low light streaming through the gaps. She turned around and was about to walk out when she heard a voice behind her.

"Turning you back on me yet again Ms Tiwari?" said a voice from behind her and Suman stopped in her tracks and turned around. She then saw Shravan, who was leaning against the side of one of the walls leading to his wardrobe.

"Shravan!" said Suman softly. "I didn't see you!"

Shravan gave a short laugh. But there was no humour in it. "Yes, you didn't see me!"

"It was dark I..." Suman started to say, when Shravan spoke.

"Dark yes...Andhera ho ya Ujala...kya aapne kabhi muje deka hai Suman? Tell me...have you ever really seen me?" he asked.

Suman paused and then she said carefully. "Shravan I know your upset...but...!"

That got a reaction from Shravan as he left the wall he was leaning on and walked a few steps towards her. "UPSET? You think I'm upset?" he said with a short laugh, again with no humour. "Upset must be the biggest understatement to describe my feelings right now. You know what I am? I am f**king furious!...actually no...no strike that...I am disappointed. Like really bloody disappointed and betrayed...yeah betrayed. THAT is what I am feeling right now. F**king furious, disappointed and betrayed! Not bad for one evening!" said Shravan as Suman watched him with wide eyes, not really knowing how to react to what he was saying. She had known convincing Shravan would be a difficult task, but the mood he was in, it looked insurmountable.

Shravan walked towards the low coffee table which was next to the couch in the middle of the room. Suman then noticed that he had a half drunk glass of what appeared to be whisky on it. He lifted the glass and emptied the contents in one swig.

"Shravan...please stop this!"

"Stop what? Peena? Kyon? Why should I stop? You know why I drink?" he asked, and when she didn't respond he gave a small smile. "Don't know?" he asked tilting his head. "Well I will spell it out for you! I drink so I can forget everything. It numbs the pain, makes it all more bearable for awhile. You know I never understood people who drank too much before. But now I do! It's a good way to just forget everything! And frankly speaking after the hour I have just had...well I f**king earned this drink!" he said with a sarcastic laugh. "I would offer you a glass too, but I think I'm all out now!"

"No thanks!" said Suman.

"No? Kyon? Don't you think you've earned a drink too Ms Tiwari? I mean after ALL that sacrificing, mahantha...all that emotional blackmail, all those responsible and heavy decisions like "marriage" to practical strangers that you have had to make lately, I think YOU have earned a drink too? Heck maybe you need it more than I do?" said Shravan with a raise of his brows to her.

"Shravan...please bas bhi karo aab!" said Suman looking at Shravan with pleading eyes.

"No Suman...TUM bas karo. Band karo ye natak! This pretence of care! I mean what the hell are you doing in here? Kya soche ga tumhara hone wale Pati, agar usse patha chal gaya ke tum ek "ghair maard" ke kamre main ho? In his shoes, I wouldn't like it at all! See...I'm the possessive type!" said Shravan with a twist of his lips. "Mera pyaar sirf mera hai...hamesha sab se pehele MUJE chune...THAT is what I want! Don't know what your fiaancee is like...but that is what I am like!"

Suman closed her eyes. She knew in this mood it was difficult to reason with Shravan. He was in no mood to listen to her. She sighed and looked at Shravan.

"I think I should leave!" she said as she half turned around to go. Just then she felt a sudden movement, as Shravan seemed galvanised into action. He walked towards her and grabbed her by the arm and pulled her towards him.

"Kaha ja rahe ho tum? Uske pass ja rahe ho?" he asked and Suman could see the flash in his eyes. That anger mixed with jealousy that she had come to recognise.

"Shravan...make up your mind please...tum chahatai kya ho?" she asked looking up at him. That line seemed to make him react as he pulled her even closer to him, and now there were inches between them.

"Tumai..." he said softly looking down at her. "Tumai chatha tha...chatha hu...aur shayad hamesha chahunga...!" He said as he moved his face closer to her. Suman closed her eyes almost in reflex as if she was almost anticipating him to kiss her. Shravan looked down at Suman's expression, her closed eyes and his lips twisted.

Suman suddenly felt a coldness in the air around her as she realised that Shravan had let her go. She opened her eyes in shock and looked at Shravan. He looked back at her and smiled.

"What did you think Ms Tiwari...that I was going to kiss you?..." he asked. "I could have, but I chose not to!" he said as he pursued his lips. "See...I don't kiss other men's fiancees!" he said as he looked at her with cold eyes. "Standards you know?" he said in a sarcastic tone.

Suman closed her eyes as she realised that tears were not far away. The emotional rollercoaster of the past few weeks and now the truth being revealed and the fallout from that had taken a toll on her.

"You know what? I won't argue with you. Kyon ke tum se behse main koi jeeth nahi saktha. But I need you to know something. I DIDN'T chose my family over you. I honestly thought that you would realise how I felt about you, and come to me, because I couldn't come to you. But you didn't. So everything just kept going from bad to worse. No matter what I did, it was always wrong to you. I wanted to tell you how I felt, but I couldn't, I couldn't Shravan. Meri majboori ko samjo! When my parents died, my family cared for me, looked after me. How could I let them down? How could I let Preeti's marriage be ruined? I couldn't do it!" said Suman in desperation.

Maybe some of the desperation in her voice broke through Shravan's fogged brain and he looked at her for a second.

"I understand Sumo...I understand your love for them. But do you understand me? Like I said...I'm possessive. I'm jealous, I want to be number one. Muje pyaar karna asaan nahi. I know that. Aur shayad...tum muje pyar bhi karthi ho...!" said Shravan and then looked at her for a moment. "Actually no...shayad nahi...tum sach main karti hogi. But can you love me the way I want to be loved? Because no matter how much we love someone, if we don't love them the way they want to be loved...then it's never enough! Aur kahi na kahi uss rishtai main ek daraar atha hai! Shayad humare beech main bhi wahi huwa!" said Shravan gravely.

"What...what are you saying Shravan?" asked Suman tentatively.

"I cant do this right now. I just cant!" said Shravan as he turned away from Suman. Suman stared at his back.

"Tumai mere pyaar par barosa nahi na? That is the problem, right? You don't think I will choose you? Well your wrong. Main hamesha se sirf aur sirf tumai chuna hai Shravan. Fromt the moment you walked out of my life, I spent every moment missing you. Until that moment we saw each other again, it felt like I had lived with a gaping hole in my life. Main kitena intezaar kiya tumhara...main kabhi tumai nahi batha saktha...I don't even know how to express what I feel in words! Words fail me. Chahati ho tumai...tumai chahti thi, chahati hu...aur hamesha chahati rahungi!" said Suman softly, and without any further ado, she turned around and left his room.

Shravan turned and he realised that Suman had already left. He wanted to go after her, but something stopped him. He knew she was telling the truth. But somewhere inside, something was broken, and he didn't know how to fix it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suman didn't even know how she drove back to her house. She could not remember the drive home at all. She parked her car and went straight to her room before anyone could see her. She needed to be alone. She was completely emotionally drained. She didn't know what more she could tell Shravan. She had told him she loved him, but he didn't seem to accept it. Well no. He did. But that still didn't seem to be enough. Maybe he was right.

Maybe loving someone was not enough? Maybe you need to love them the way they NEED to be loved. That was probably the issue between them always. They had always been on the wrong page with each other. Never gave each other exactly what the other wanted. Maybe that's why people were able to come between them? Well actually it was not people, it was misunderstandings. And the only way that was possible was miscommunication. What will their future be, if they could not overcome these issues?

HOW was she going to make Shravan believe that HE was first for her? She went and sat down on her couch, and then decided to put away some of the things lying around in the room back to her cupboard. She opened the cupboard door and saw the box inside in one corner. The box where she had kept all the old memories of Shravan and her. She pulled the box out, almost as if needing to be close to it. She started looking through it, and then she saw it. The letter she had written Shravan ALL those years ago. The letter where she told him how sorry she was for everything that happened. How much she missed him, and how she wished he was here. The last line of the letter stood out to her.

"I know I have been a fool. But...Agar zindagi mai muje ek aur baar tumai aur kisi aur ke beech mai kisi ek ko chun na pade...toh main hamesha tumai choonongi. This time I will choose you. I will always choose you. Always. I promise. Please aab wapis ajao. Muje tumhari zaroorath hai!"

Tumhari,

Sumo.

Suddenly she knew what she had to do. She quickly took the letter to her bed. Then laid it on top of the blanket, and took her phone out. She took a quick picture of it, and went into her WhatsApp. She opened up Shravan on the contact list and wrote a message.

"A letter that should have reached you 10 years ago. From the moment you left I knew, it was always you. Given another chance...I will always choose you!" Sumo.

She attached the picture of the letter and sent it to him. She didn't think he would even read it tonight. He probably didn't even have his phone with him. It seemed that Johnny Walker was his constant companion now. But he will see it sometime, and then he will know. Suman felt at peace after she had sent the message. She knew she had done what she needed to do. She went to the bathroom to get ready for bed. She changed into her pyjama pants and t-shirt and came back to the bed. She looked at her phone and there was no message. What had she expected? That he would respond. She shook her head at her own foolishness and put the phone on the bedside table and switched off the light and decided to try and get some sleep.

Around half an hour later as she had started to doze off, she thought she heard a knock on the front door. She stirred and the knock continued. Suddenly Suman sat bolt upright in bed as she realised that it was "That" knock. Her's and Shravan's "Code" knock. Was he really here or was she hearing things? Then she heard it again and this time she leapt out of bed and went to her bedroom door and slowly opening it, almost ran to the front door. She opened the door, half in anticipation and half in disbelief that he would actually be there. As she opened the door and looked up, there he was. She simply stared at him.

She felt a sense of Dj vu set in, as she suddenly remembered that first time she had seen him again after 10 years. He had been standing here just like this, and he had been standing at her door. They had started at each other, unable to quite believe they were actually in front of each other after all those years. This felt almost like that moment.

"What took you so long?" asked Shravan roughly as without any further ado, he pulled her into his arms and bending his head towards hers, captured her lips with his. Suman only hesitated for a second in surprise, but soon she was kissing him back and they were locked in a passionate embrace for long moments. They moved away from each other to get air, and Shravan looked down at Suman.

"I see you got my message!" said Suman with a small smile.

"Loud and clear!" said Shravan, with a slow smile of his own.

"I choose you Shravan...always!" said Suman softly.

"For me it was always you!" said Shravan as Suman flung herself back into his arms. Shravan held her tight. He had been about to go downstairs in search of another bottle of drink, when he had picked up his phone almost absently and glanced at it. He had seen a message on his WhatsApp and when he saw it was from Suman, he had almost decided not to read it right then. But something had compelled him to. What he had seen there had been like a bolt of lightning hitting him. It had been a revelation. He felt like finally he saw what he had been wanting to see all this time. A confirmation that Suman had longed for him as much as he had longed for her. Now he knew. She had.

He promised to himself as he held Suman close that he would never let her go. Nothing or no one would ever come between him and his Sumo again.

"Mera pyaar sirf mera tha...mera hai...aur hamesha sirf meri hi rahegi!" He told himself. Suman was his, and always will be!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
