Part III
Just like all days, the school day came to end and Suman began to make her way back home. Her mind plagued with concerns of her future. Failure here was not option, she needed help and she needed it from him.
With each step she became more confused. What would she do now. She paused in her tracks, closed her eyes and took in a deep breath of humid air. In trying to calm herself she almost didn't hear the sound of a ball rapidly bouncing around a court and the handsome boy that came with it.
Suman clearly recognised him as the boy that consumed her mind, but somehow he looked different. He looked ... free, and in that moment Suman never felt more jealous in her life. To be young and carefree, away from the pains the world inflicted.
Thats all she ever wanted, but instead she was left standing there admiring him as he ran up and down looking almost sinly. Drops of sweat slid down his face and on to the floor as he took a seat on the concrete to catch his breath. This was her moment. It was now or never.
She walked confidently to where he was sitting on the floor and offered him her hand to stand up. His eyes lit up in confusion and recognition allowing Suman to catch him off guard. She smiled at him brightly expecting him to say something but he didn't, he simply took her hand, stood up and continued his game. Just as she was about to blow her top he spoke up.
"You're the new girl in our class aren't you?" he said stating a fact rather than asking a question. "Whats your name again ?"
"Suman... my name is Suman." He nodded shooting the ball making another basket. "Whats your's?" she asked realising she had never even heard his name.
He looked at her and then back towards the ball again. "Does it matter" he asked. "You'll forget anyways"
Suman ran toward the bouncing ball catching it just in time before it reached him This time truly catching his attention.
"No... I wont" She promised matter of factly.
He ran his hand through his messy black hair before whispering out "Shravan."
"Shravan she repeated tasting the words for the first time. She couldn't help but feel like it suited him.
She thought she caught a look in his eye but when she turned back to catch it, he went back to his game. Suman knew she had to try another tactic, clearly talking wasn't going to get through to him. Suddenly an idea popped into her head.
"Ill play you for it" she said suddenly determined tying her hair into a messy bun.
"What ?" he asked looking at her, weirdly confused.
"A seat next to you" she said as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. She began hopping in place, warming up.
"huh...why me. Im sure there are many other people in class who would gladly sit with you."
"Do I need a reason to want to sit with the smartest kid in class... and plus I need the help" she said persistently.
"You sure ?" he asked catching on. "Wouldn't want to embarrass you."
He gave her a cheeky smile and she responded with a bright smile of her own.
"What makes you think you will win" she challenged shooting the ball into the basket with ease.
"Call it a gut feeling" he grabbed the ball from her, now serious. "That still doesn't change the fact that I get nothing from this deal"
Suman had grown up around boys and although she wasn't the best player she could definitely hold her own in a game of basketball. Her biggest advantage was that people always underestimated her.
"Well what do you want? " she asked removing her sweat shirt leaving her in just a vest.
She heard him suck in a breath and smiled inwardly at the effect she was having on him.
"You should just give up now" he said instead of giving her his terms.
Suman let out a laugh " Tell you what, since you're so confident, and we both know that with that height their is no way Ill be able to out play you for long... best of three ?" she asked as an after thought.
Shravan was left shocked at the situation he was in. Never in his life had anyone challenged him this way, and if he was being honest he never felt more alive.
"You're on... you can start" he said cockily.
"Time to show em Suman" she whispered to herself.
Standing at the half court she looked at Shravan. He looked like a matador about to charge a bull. There would be no escaping him, so instead of trying she simply dribbled a few steps closer and took her shot. She then watched almost in slow motion as the ball made its way into the basket.
Suman immediately celebrated in her mind shocking herself and Shravan at her abilities. He looked at her appreciatively silently apologising for underestimating her, but Shravan wasn't one to make this mistake again.
He took the next round much more seriously easily tackling the ball from her and scoring while barely jumping.
"Damn him and his height" Suman muttered.
Now it was his turn to start and it was also the final basket. Suman was worried... she could clearly see on his face he thought he had won. But Suman was anything ... but she was not a looser.
Shravan stood at the place she stood moments ago with the look she had on her face moments ago. He began dribbling towards the basket and all she knew in that moment was that she had to stop him.
With each step he took forward she took an equal step towards him, blocking him. His eyes widened suddenly when she stepped in so close he could feel her hot breath on his neck.
He stopped dribbling and suddenly was at odds with what to do with himself.
"How does it feel" she asked feeling every muscle of his body pressed up against her. Her big brown eyes looking up at him expectantly.
"Feel what?" he whispered completely out of breath, clearly not from the exercise.
Suman quickly grabbed the ball from him, turning around swiftly to score her winning basket.
"To loose to a girl" She laughed heartily as her brown eyes twinkled triumphantly in the sun.
Shravan stood awe struck, no one had ever distracted him enough to loose at basketball. Yet here this girl, a girl he hadn't even known had bested him.
"Cat got your tongue" she teased putting her sweat shirt back releasing her hair from its confines.
He still didn't say anything, he didn't know what to.
Suman turned around to look at him once more to make sure he was okay "see you tomorrow ... Shravan" she emphasised his name as if making a point.
"Save me a seat" she winked.
She then continued back along the path from which she once came, but this time with a different future in mind. A future she could build and change and with each step she felt more confident in her self and in her decision to come here. Her destiny was now in her own hands.
To be continued...
