Its only a 200 episode show I think & if you want, you can start watching from when the show takes a leap. Basically, they live in this village where there is a shortage of water & Vasant (one of the main leads) is told that there is a girl who will be able to bring water in this village through her anklet. Like her anklet will give her an idea of where the water can be found. So Vasant goes out in the search of Neerja who is Gulaal. He finds her, they bring water into the village & in the process, fall in love & get married. Throughout this, its to be noted that Gulaal & 8 year old Kesar (Vasant's brother) share a deep bond & before her marriage to Vasant. He even remarks that he would love to get married to Gulaal, in all innocence. Also the priest had predicted that she would be married twice.

Vasant is killed by his second brother because his 2nd brother lusted after Gulaal. And Gulaal despite knowing about this, bound to her promise to Vasant, doesn't punish the murderer. The villlage decides that because Gulaal is young, she should be married to the brother. But Gulaal instead of placing Vasant's shoes (thats how the marriage happens) in Dushyant's feet (lustful brother) places it in Kesar's feet. Kesar is constantly mocked in school by everyone for being married & he feels the responsibility. Gulaal & Kesar's life start revolving around each other. But the patriarch of this house is scared of their growing closeness so he sends Kesar away to study. Before going away to study, Kesar overhears Gulaal's conversation with this hijra that she knew about the man who was involved in Vasant's murder. Kesar leaves with this turmoil. And refuses to meet Gulaal for 10 years whenever she comes to meet him.

LEAP - 10 years later

Kesar returns home. And starts behaving differently. He is rude to Gulaal, passes snide comments about her, humiliates her, but every night, he sits alone, reads the letters he wrote to Gulaal over the years & cries. Because he cannot take it. He is scared to confront her, because if the answer turns out to be what he is fearing, he will lose her forever. And if its not, he won't be able to live in the guilt of the pain he caused her. To spite her, he agrees to get married to another girl but on the day of the wedding, he shocks everyone by deciding not to marry that girl & raises the question as to what his relationship with Gulaal is because he's grown up as her husband. Gulaal decides to seek a divorce from Kesar in the panchayat but he refuses to do so. In the process, he realises that he's always loved her. And he confesses his love to her. She decides to leave but then he goes a step further to declare his love to her infront of the entire family, leaving everybody shocked. But he reasons it out that there is nothing wrong with a man loving his wife. She leaves nonetheless, leaving Kesar angry. He's like a child. So he goes to the panchayat for a remedy & the panchayat decides that if Gulaal doesn't return the water of both families will be cut off. She returns after much resistance, but her attitude to Kesar is unmoved & he continues his anger of why nobody understands him & his love. Then he realises through a friend that loving is letting go, so he decides to let her go infront of the whole panchayat & the panchayat decides that they have to live together for 3 months & then they will be asked again if they want to live together again or not. 3 months pass (i wont go into details here) - they live like friends & on the D day, they divorce. But after the divorce, she pines for him & both of them meet again like lovers..& soon she realises that she loves him & there is nothing wrong with loving him. They unite & the story ends.

Honestly my description doesn't do justice to the emotions the characters felt, their chemistry, their brilliant performances & the direction of the show. You got to watch it to see how amazing it is. If you wanna give it a try, watch from post the leap. April 2011. It ends in August 2011. So its not a lot of episodes.
