One thing about the Sudama incident last night - the original texts have his wife urging him to go and meet Krishna, and she begs for 4 fistfuls of rice, which she then gives Sudama to present Krishna. Last night, they showed only 2 grains.

They seemed to have made a khichri (pun intended) of Sudama's & Draupadi/Durvasa's stories. In the latter case, Draupadi had just a grain of rice, which was enough to satisfy Krishna. But in Sudama's case, he had 4 fistfuls, and they didn't just teleport to Krishna's Star Trek palace 😆 - he went & gave it.

Also, did Sudama have 4 kids? I thought he had only 2 - a son & a daughter. Also, Sudama wasn't doing penance for any previous life - once @ his Guru's ashram, he had eaten a poha meant for Krishna, and so until he repaid Krishna that, he was doomed to abject poverty (which incidentally, they showed beautifully)

Anyway, I hope they show him visiting Dwarka tonight.

Don't read the English Translation- if possible read the original in Sanskrit itself.

Lines 16-17mention that Sudama entered the palaces of one of the queens.

Line 18 says At that time Krishna was relaxing with his beloved - "priya " is the exact word used. No names yet

Line 23 says "devi" fanned him and served him. No epithets qualifying 'devi'

Friends, I believe Sagars have a convenient loophole here. Having gone thru the original with a fine tooth comb, I found that Rukmini, per se is not mentioned.

The only indication that it is Rukmini who is holding Krishna's hand as he is about to eat the second handful of Dried rice comes in the line 10 of 81 chapter "shri jaghre hastam"- meaning
Shri i.e Lakshmi siezeed his hand; jagre- siezed; hastam- hand.

Vrish,

Yes they have to show Sudama visiting Dwaraka and Krishna eating one handful the poha and Rukmini (SB in this case) preventing him from eating the second. That is the crux of the story. One handful was enough to secure unimaginable riches for Sudama, a second handful would have meant that Lakshmi would have had to permanantly reside with Sudama- which naturally Rukmini didn't want.

Indeed Sudama does take four fistfuls of puffed rice. It is mentioned specifically in Bhagavatham. It would be shame if they do not show it since it is pregnant with inner meaning.

However, reading the texts, I see nothing about Sudama offering Krishna 2 grains of rice sitting @ home. I once had an ACK Sudama, and there too, it said nothing like that. After his kids complained about their hunger, his wife urged him to go to Krishna, and decided that he couldn't go empty handed. In the ACK, it wasn't mentioned that she begged for the rice, and she tied it all in one bundle.

But watching the episode w/ Krishna eating one grain & Satyabhama the other, I wondered whether they ended the episode here. If they've got it now, what's the point in Sudama going to Dwarka and gifting Krishna those pohas, since he's already fed him & Krishna is satisfied?

Also, Krishna kept referring to Sudama striving for moksh, but does that mean that like that rishi Sharabhanga (thanks vaarali for reminding me) who went to heaven after meeting Rama, that he too would die and his birth cycles would end? If that's what they show, it would be a serious distortion: at the end of this episode, Sudama ends up rich, but unlike normal people, the riches don't go to his head, and he spends the rest of his life singing praises of Shri Krishna. I don't think any of the texts mention his death.

Incidentally, is it known where Sudama lived? Was it in Ujjain, where he studied under Rishi Sandipan?

You are correct. The half grain offering is a Sagar innovation. Susheela does beg for rice from her neighbours. They were that poor. They didn't even have Four handfuls of rice with them.

Very true. Probably Krishna is waiting for him to offer it in person.

Are you referring to Rishi Sharabhanga? Yes SUdama returns home to find his hut replaced by a palace , etc ,etc...

Incidentally, is it known where Sudama lived? Was it in Ujjain, where he studied under Rishi Sandipan?

@ Vrish, Varaali,

In RS SK also, it was shown that before going to Dwarika, Sudama did offer one grain of rice and Krishna/ Vishnu received that. After that all the incidents about his journey to Dwarika took place.

What I can understand from this incident is that the 'daily offering' to the Lord by Sudama was a 'normal practice' by him, done everyday. Krishna knew about it from the very beginning. The reason they showed us (as well as to SB) all these details, so as to get an idea about the 'daily life' of Sudama. Krishna has always been satisfied/ happy with the Sincere Devotion of Sudama, but only after he made his attempt to meet Krishna, offer Him that puffed rice, then only Krishna (and Devi Lakshmi) did all the Miracles. That 'actual incident' (Sudama going to Dwarika and meeting Krishna) will be shown as an 'example' in front of the world. So, that incident should be coming in today's episode, if they are going with the org story ( which we all expect them to do 😊).

RS SK also showed his wife begging for the rice to send it to Shri Krishna. And yes, you are right, Vrish. Even after getting all the riches, Sudama prayed for 'dispassion' WRT all his wealth as his only aim of life was 'Devotion' to Shri Krishna.

But aiming for Moksha does not mean that his life would end after meeting Krishna. The time 'predestined' for his mortal body will be permanent, he had to spent that much time on this earth. Moksha/ Liberation has various meanings acc. to various theories.

And yes, to some exent, they are showing something like the Durvasa-Draupadi-Krishna story here, just brought that angle by showing all the 'Devtas' getting Satisfied at the end of yesterday's episode. I also think that sc. was unnecessary. But I guess Sudama/ Susheela mentioned something about- 'Srishti ko santusht karna' in one of their dialogue (not sure th' 😳) ... May be it was shown in that ref.

Thanks for the explanation - hope they show Sudama's visit to Dwarka tonight.

I have one question about Sudama - is the name of his wife mentioned as being Susheela, or is that another license that the show just took? 😆

Sudama lived in what's present day Porbandar, Gujarat. In fact Porbandar is also known as Sudamapuri. It is also renowned for giving us another Mahatma, Gandhiji.

Sudamapuri Mandir - marks the spot where Sudama was born / lived.

As far as his wife's name is concerned... her name was Sushila. Though I'm not sure if there's documentary proof for this. Srimad Bhagvatam doesn't really give her a name. But, I know that Sushila is certainly NOT a Sagar-created name. In many Gujarati poems and bhajans (written well before the days of TV serials !) her name is given as Sushila.

Aalochak has already answered 😊. I didn't know anything more about it. RS SK used a name for the wife of Sudama, but currently I can't remember whether it was Susheela or something else, will try to mention it here in future.
