Chapter 4: Main Hoon Hero Tera

Radhika's heart was beating a hundred miles per hour. All her eyes could see was a group of men slowly encroaching into her personal space. She raised her hand higher threatening to use the pepper spray. She had already showed them that she was not afraid to use it. The man in the yellow tank was evidence of that. He was off on the side wallowing in pain. She pushed the nozzle as one of the men taunted her tricking her in using the spray as he quickly backed away. She knew the canister wasn't going to last long. From her peripheral she saw a flash of white as the man whom she had a run in at the hotel lounge had moved to the front shielding her from the goons. Within seconds all mayhem exploded as fists, kicks, and bodies went flying. She could barely keep up with what was going on around her. Her body was in flight mode and it was taking every ounce of energy to keep herself from being caught. She somehow found a thick palm tree branch lying on the ground and quickly held it into her possession using it to hit whomever dared to come close to her. She swung violently and haphazardly around her. She heard muffled grunts and cries of pain as the hard dry leaves made contact against skin. Her body tensed as a hand reached out and caught hold of her hand forcing her to let go of her only protection. She cried out and flailed her arms using the palm of her hands to slap the person's shoulder. She was so caught up in the moment that she couldn't hear the person talking to her.

Arjun winched as he felt each slap to his shoulder. "Stop...it's okay. No one is going to hurt you. They are gone!" He tired to reason with her but to no avail. Eventually he was able to grab a hold of her other arm and stop the onslaught. "Are You Quite Done?! They are gone! STOP!"

Radhika opened her eyes and looked at the red faced man in front of her. He took a step back breathing slowly to steady himself. His face was flushed not from anger but from the fight. The white shirt he was wearing was now marred. She watched as he fixed his sleeves pulling them back down trying his best to look presentable again. "Who are you?" she suddenly asked.

Arjun stiffened feeling offended that after all he had just done this was the first thing she was going to say to him. "Didn't I tell you to stop drinking?" Radhika was taken aback by his tone and furrowed her eyebrows. "You wouldn't have been in this mess if you would stop getting drunk."

"I don't know who you think you are but don't you dare lecture me," Radhika huffed. "And I am not drunk!"

"Oh really, what girl in their right mind decides its okay to wander out with some guys...alone, by herself...on a midnight stroll?"

"That's not what happened."

"They wanted to show you some cute puppies and kittens for sale?" Arjun taunted.

Radhika clenched her fist, "You are just so rude. You know nothing about me and you're just making up things! You know what, I was going to say thank you---"

"That's fine. I don't want it," Arjun interrupted. "I must be cursed or something because you keep following me around. You are like a bad omen. Wherever you go trouble just follows," folding his hands together, "Just leave me and let me live in peace."

"You shouldn't be so rude, " Radhika replied. "You know my Dadaji always says..." Arjun cringed as Radhika went on and on about manners and her Dadaji's words. He eventually looked away feeling extremely disinterested and annoyed. When he finally heard silence he smirked, "Finally Dadaji's 50 hour lecture is over." His chuckling was halted when he felt a heavy weight fall onto his chest. He looked down and saw that she had fainted on top of him. "What is this? Why is this happening to me?" he uttered in disbelief as he held her up. He glanced around him and sighed, "Now, what am going to do?" looking back down at the limp body in his arms. "I don't even know her name."

*****************************************************************************************

Shadows flickered across the windows of the Range Rover as the SUV glided across the midnight streets of Goa. Arjun sat in the back seat glancing every so often at the silent passenger next to him. His eyes reflected a worried expression that his stern face was masking. He had no idea what he was going to do once they reached the hotel. It was probably going to look suspicious carrying her unconscious body and requesting for her room number at the front lobby. He did not even know her name. And she was not carrying any type of identification on her; no purse, no cell phone, nothing. The only thing she had was the empty pepper spray. Arjun sighed at his predicament. This was turning into one hell of a vacation and not in a good way. His body tensed when he sensed that she was slowly coming to. He turned towards her and awaited her reaction.

Radhika felt a strange grogginess lifting from her head. Her eyes gently blinked into focus as her hand held the side of her head. She was confused at first; feeling the movement of motion even though she was not physically walking. She took a few steady breaths and recognized the scent of luxury leather. Her eyes began searching as her brain started processing where she was. She was in a sports utility vehicle and it was driving somewhere. She quickly turned to her right and saw him staring at her. She instinctively backed away leaning as far as she could against the car door. "Wh-what are you doing? Where are you taking me?"

"Just calm down," Arjun replied with his hands raised. Realizing too late that the gesture was probably not the right one to use considering the limited space they had. He cringed as she flew into a response he was hoping to avoid.

"Wh-what did you do to me? Are you kidnapping me? Help! Help! Driver, Don't Listen to this Man! I don't know him! He's forcefully taking me away!"

"No one is kidnapping you!" Arjun riled. "We are going back to the hotel."

Radhika's eyes widen in terror and she crossed her arms across her chest tightly clenching them close to her body. Arjun rolled his eyes at her reaction. "How do you know where I am staying? Are you stalking me?!"

"How can I stalk you?" Arjun replied in disbelief. "We met at the hotel lounge!" looking at the driver with pleading eyes, "Driver, please explain to her. That you are a driver from the Grand Hyatt."

"Yes Madam...Sir is correct. I am a driver from the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Goa. We are driving back to the hotel. Sir was concern because you had fainted. He wanted to take you back."

Radhika relaxed a little as she saw the main entrance to the Grand Hyatt Hotel come into view. She glanced at Arjun who was slightly glaring at her. She turned her head away not sure how she should acknowledge the situation.

"Now you are all quiet? What happened to your Dadaji's teachings? You were lecturing me earlier..."

"I'm sorry, thank you," Radhika said as she sheepishly looked at him. Whatever remorse she had felt quickly vanished when she saw him smirk. She just wanted to wipe that devilishly stubbled grin off his face.

The doorman gently opened the car door of the Range Rover when it parked. Radhika took a step out and nearly fell over. The doorman had caught her and with a worried expression he asked, "Madam, are you all right?"

"Yes, I'm fine. Thank you," Radhika replied despite the sudden pain she felt in her left ankle. She turned to her right when she heard a snort. It was Arjun. He shook his head and then walked ahead. Radhika felt her insides twist with annoyance. She hobbled behind and asked, "What did you do to me?"

Arjun turned around and furrowed his eyebrows. "I thought we already established that I did not do anything to you. I beat a bunch of goons for you and you are still suspecting me?"

"Why does my head hurt?" she inquired.

"I don't know, maybe it is because you drank too much."

Radhika held her head, "I am Not Drunk! Maybe tipsy but Not Drunk!"

"Shhh...lower your voice if you don't want everyone to think you are drunk," Arjun shushed as he looked around the lobby at the people staring at them.

"And why would you care? I'm the one embarrassing myself."

"You're right I shouldn't care," Arjun replied. He then walked over to the small buffet table where the free bottled water was being offered. He pulled two out of the ice bucket and handed one to Radhika. "Drink this. It should make you feel better."

Radhika opened it without saying anything and took a long drink unaware all this time how thirsty she had really been. "Thank you," she murmured.

"What was that?" Arjun asked.

"Thank you..."

"Sorry, I couldn't hear you," he asked again putting his hand to his ear.

"Thank You!" Arjun simply smirked making Radhika feel irritated. She then sighed and rubbed her forehead, "Why can't I remember anything? I went to the bar to get water...and then you and those and guys were fighting...and now I'm here at the hotel."

"You don't remember anything?" Radhika shook her head with a worried expression on her face. "Did you drink anything at the bar?"

"I-I...don't remember much. Maybe...I," suddenly recalling, "Someone bought me a drink..."

"And you had it?" Arjun inquired. "Unbelievable, didn't your parents teach you not to have drinks from a stranger? You were drugged and probably by those guys. You don't how lucky you are that nothing happened to you." Noticing that her eyes were suddenly brimming with tears he panicked, "B-but you're okay now. Sab thika hai. Chinta mat karo."

"Oh God," Radhika breathed.

"Drink more water. You'll feel better, " Arjun informed as he pushed the bottled water closer to her lips.

"Thank you, really...Thank you."

Arjun simply replied, "It was the right thing to do."

Sam searched with anxious eyes as she walked through the dance floor checking every single female she encountered. Her stomach was twisting uncomfortably with each passing second. She, Neil, and rest of the girls had been searching for Radhika for the past thirty minutes.

"She's not in the restrooms," Shreya informed. "We checked again. Neil even checked the men's room just in case she got mixed up and walked into there instead."

"Sam, don't worry we'll find her," Neil said trying to keep her calm.

"How did she disappear? How could we let her disappear? What kind of friend am I? I just let her walk by herself to the bar."

"Sam...Sam, look at me," Neil instructed. He could see the fear and anxiety in her eyes and it just broke his heart. "We are going to find her. Everything is going to be all right," he encouraged.

"The bartender doesn't recall seeing Radhika," Asha said as she came towards the group with Bani in tow. "But he also said that the other bartender just went on break. He may have seen her. We'll have to wait until he comes back to question him."

"I shouldn't have left her," Toral said with regret. "I should have gone with her."

"All her things are still here. Her purse and mobile," Pooja said. "She usually carries her phone with her all the time. But she just left it on the table."

"We can't even call her to find out where she is. What if something happened to her?" Sam asked with worry.

"Let's not jump to conclusions," Neil replied trying to calm the situation down. He exhaled sharply, "Even I can't find my cousin. If he was here he could have helped."

"Should we go to the police?" Asha looked at her friends waiting for a reply.

"Don't we have to wait at least 24 hours before we can report someone missing?" Bani replied.

Sam shook her head in agitation, "What am I going to tell her parents? That I lost their daughter in Goa? Radhika is my best friend and I just let her go...get lost somewhere..."

"Let's not think like that. No one got lost or is lost."

"But Neil we've been searching for her all over this club and no one has seen her. Th-they don't know anything," Sam replied heated.

"I know, I know...but we have to think calmly. Now is not the time to panic. You guys have pictures of her on your mobiles?" He saw the group of friends nodding their heads in unison. "Good, let's ask again but show them her picture. Someone is bound to have seen her. I'll go out and ask the taxi drivers outside. They may have seen something. I just need a picture. That is one thing we haven't done yet."

"Here, take Radhika's phone," Pooja said. "She's got pictures in there."

"Okay," looking at Asha, "When is the bartender coming back from break?"

"I think another thirty minutes from now."

"Okay, we will meet back at the bar thirty minutes from now," Neil order. The girls nodded in agreement at the plan and then disperse into the crowd to complete their task.

Radhika walked slowly towards the elevator trying to maintain her composure despite how her ankle was feeling. She sensed his presence behind her as she reached for the elevator button. They waited in silence for the lift to come. When the doors pinged announcing its arrival they stepped into the small confined space. Before the doors could close another guest slipped through with an apologetic smile. He pressed the button to the 3rd floor. Radhika reached over and pressed the 1st floor button. They heard the automatic doors close shut and the lift gears rolling into action as they started to move upward. Upon arriving at the first floor, Radhika hobbled her way out and turned left to head towards her room. She thought that her companion was still on the elevator but she soon heard his voice behind her.

"You're walking very slow."

"If I'm too slow you can walk in front," Radhika replied. As soon as those words left her mouth she realized her tone was filled with annoyance, even though she did not truly mean it that way. This man had already done so much for her. She was just tired and wanted to go back to her room and rest. Arjun moved to her side and walked in pace with her. "You don't have to walk me to my room."

"I'm not," Arjun replied his hands stuffed in his pant pockets. He hid his smirk seeing her raise her head to look at him with questioning eyes. "My room is on the first floor too." He then glanced down at her feet. "You should probably check on that ankle. Keep it elevated and iced."

"Thank you. I will." Radhika breathed a sigh of relief when they had finally reached her room but then soon cringed when she realized. "I don't have the key." She gave a hesitant look at Arjun who could not help but let out an exhausted sigh.

"My room is one down. You can stay there while I go back to the lobby and get the key for you."

"No, I've troubled you enough. I'll go back," Radhika answered and attempted to turn around. She fell sideways and clung to the wall for support as her left leg finally gave.

"You're in no condition to walk." Radhika looked at the hand that was being offered and shyly took it. Arjun wrapped his arm around her shoulders and they slowly made their way to room 1144. He opened the door and motioned with his head for her to go in. "I'll be back. Just wait here," he said and then left.

Fifteen minutes later, Arjun was back at the front door of his room. He inserted the room key and then turned the knob. As he walked through the entrance way he could hear voices in some deep conversation. Suddenly dramatic background music started to play and he knew it was some scene from a TV serial. His eyes widen in surprise when he rounded the corner; seeing Radhika fast asleep on the bed. "This girl," he muttered to himself. He walked over to wake her but then seeing the condition of her left ankle stopped himself. The last few hours had been rather traumatic for her and she was probably exhausted. Would he had preferred her sleeping in her own room, yes, but at the moment there was nothing he could do. Arjun went to his suitcase and took out his toiletry bag looking for muscle ointment. He opened the small bottle of Tiger Balm and knelt down to gently rub the cooling substance on her swollen ankle. He watched her cautiously knowing the type of relationship they had; if she found him touching her she would probably jump to some strange conclusion and cause a scene. After putting the Tiger Balm away he decided that it was still the best for her to go back to her own room. He did not want to be awaken a few hours from now by hysterical screaming because she thought he had done something to her.

Arjun sighed, "I still don't know her name." He gently tapped her shoulder, "Excuse me...Madam...wake up...I have your room key...wake up...hello...Madam..." He watched as she stirred and quickly backed away making sure she would not think he was doing something inappropriate with her. He scrunched his nose when he saw her settling herself against the pillow and falling back asleep. Arjun exhaled through his mouth and then tapped her shoulder again, "Madam...get up...hello...Madam..." He watched in frustration as she continued to sleep. "You sleep you like a brick," Then hearing her starting to softly snore he mumbled, "I feel pity for whomever is going to be your husband." Arjun ran his hands through his hair trying to figure out what he could do next to get her to wake up. He reach to the side and grabbed the comforter that she was sleeping on top of and started to slowly tug. He was hoping the movement would being to irritate her and she would wake up. "Hey, Madam...get up...hello...wake up...Madam...this isn't your room or bed...wake up...unless you want to be sleeping with some stranger tonight...hey Madam...Get up...Hellooo..." He gave a hard tug on the comforter annoyed that she was still sleeping. He walked away and started pacing the room. His eyes suddenly fell on the complimentary bottled water and he grinned mischievously. "Hey Madam!" Arjun called as he started sprinkling water on her face. "Get up!"

Radhika murmured something in annoyance and tried to flip over hiding her face into the pillow. Arjun grabbed the pillow and yanked it right out from under her. She awoke with a start and grumbled, "Not funny Sam!"

"Sam?" Arjun blinked. "Hey, I'm not your boyfriend. Wake up!"

Radhika rubbed her eyes and looked up at Arjun in dismay. "What are you doing?"

"What am I doing? Hello Madam, you are sleeping in my room. I have your key and now you can go back to your Sam," Arjun replied as he tossed over the key card. "Go bother your boyfriend not me."

"Boyfriend? Who?"

"Sam...or your imaginary boyfriend," Arjun replied.

"Sam's not my boyfriend. She's my best friend. We're roommates."

"Okay fine then. I don't really care," Arjun stated. "You can leave now," motioning with his eyes to the front door.

Radhika stared at the man in front of her completely perplexed at his attitude. One minute he was grumpy and the next minute he would be civil. "He must bipolar..."

"Excuse me?" Arjun asked with a furrow brow.

Radhika gave a timid smile feeling embarrassed that she had actually said that thought out loud, "Nothing..." She gingerly got off the bed and looked at him expecting that he was going to at least help her like before, but he did nothing. She hobbled her way to the front door and turned around when he said, "Your shoes." Radhika was soon facing a closed door with her shoes in hand out in the hotel hallway. "Unbelievable..." she sighed.

*****************************************************************************************

Sam stood with the rest of the girls and Neil at the front lobby of the Grand Hyatt working out the plan for the next day if Radhika did not return to the hotel. "We just need to stay calm," Sam chanted to herself. "We just need to stay clam."

"Right, she's a grown adult and there is probably a reasonable explanation for all of this," Asha added.

"I don't care, I'm mad now," Toral voiced. "How could she just wander off like that and not tell anyone? Why didn't she take her phone with her? She's way too caring and naive...she will help anyone without any questions if they just ask her."

"Toral," Shreya said with disappointment. "Are you serious? We are all worried and you are actually mad at her?"

"I'm worried too...I'm so worried that I'm upset now," she defended. "There is something called responsibility. She just sort of walks into trouble."

"You can't fault her if that is her kismet, "Bani replied.

"Kismet or not...she's not allowed to wander off anymore. Once we find her...it's you are not allowed out of my sight."

Sam rubbed her forehead and murmured, "She came all the way from Hrisikesh to Mumbai to chase her dream of becoming a writer. She even broke her engagement. This cannot be the end of her story. She had so much talent."

"She was a good friend," Pooja sorrowfully stated.

"She made the best cupcakes," Bani added.

"Her puris were always so round...mine are still lopsided," Shreya said.

"I didn't get a chance to get her dal recipe," Asha said with much regret.

Neil was alarmed at the way the conversation was turning and quickly spoke up. "Let's refrain from mentioning her in the past tense. For all we know she could be sleeping in her room right now."

"If she is I'm going to strangle her," Sam interjected making Neil jump a little. Two seconds ago she was worrying about her friend and beating her self up for not being with her and now all of sudden she was threatening to strangle her. "She knows my number. She memorized it. She could have called me."

"That's right," Toral huffed.

Neil cleared his throat trying to change the topic again, "It's been a long day. I think we could all use a good nights rest and we'll met up in the morning."

The girls all nodded and they headed to the elevators. Neil and Sam got off on the first floor and walked quietly down the hallway. "Thank you Neil. I know this is probably the last thing you thought you would be doing on your vacation."

"No sorry, no thank you," he simply replied making Sam smile as she caught the reference. "I wanted to help and I will be here to continue to help." Neil watched as her grin grew even brighter making him smile in return. "I know how it feels to lose someone dear. The pain of separation and not knowing why." Sam gazed at him feeling the depth of his words. There was a hidden darkness in them that was the opposite of his generally cheerful demeanor. Noticing how she was looking at him he flashed a smile, "So," arching his eyebrows, "The infamous room 1142. We are here." Sam let out a warm laugh making him feel good inside. "Goodnight Sam."

"Goodnight Neil," she replied and entered her room.

*****************************************************************************************

Sam yawned as she fumbled with the light switch trying to find the right one to turn on. After successfully locating it she turned to face the room and let out a soft gasp. There she was. Her best friend; fast asleep in one of the double beds. Sam could barely believe what she was seeing. She walked closer to inspect and gently poked Radhika's shoulder. Confirming that this was no mirage, her eyes immediately narrowed as she placed her hand back on her shoulder and started shaking her. "Radhika Mishra...wake up."

"Ehhh...what now...can't you just let me sleep?"

"Ahoy...Madam ji! Wake up. You have a lot of explaining to do," Sam ordered. She saw Radhika hunker down pulling the comforter closer to her body as her face turned inward into the pillow. Sam grabbed her arm and started to yank. Radhika sleepily cracked her eyes open as she got tussled about. "Kyun? Why can't anyone let me just sleep?"

"Sleep? Do you know how worried I was about where you disappeared to? Do you know how worried the rest of the girls were? Even Neil was worried about you and I've only know him for two days!" Sam yelled. "And you want to sleep?"

Radhika sat up right and blinked at her. "Sam?"

"Yes, remember me your best friend? You left us without telling us where you were going Radhika! What happened?"

Radhika stared blankly at her friend debating what she should tell her. It was nearly three o'clock in the morning and she was just not in the mood to play twenty questions. She also did not want to alarm Sam with her story, especially since she did not even know the name of her savior. "Well, you see..."
