The girl gasped and said, "What what? Am I not pretty?"
Neil stood there, looking at the girl with the most weirdest expressions he could muster.
"Don't give me those weird looks. I am pretty and totally a to be "stared at" material! By the way I am Priyanshi and you are?"
Neil was still looking at the girl, Priyanshi who was responding his weird looks by one of her own.
"Hey-ya" Priyanshi drawled as she waved her hand in front of Neil's face.
That brought Neil out of his thoughts. "Kya?" he asked.
"Ae lo! You didn't heard me? I said that I am Priyanshi, tumhaara naam kya hai?"
"Oh.."
"Your name is "Oh"???!! What a unique name!" Priyanshi chirped, interrupting Neil.
"No!!" Neil immediately added. "It's Neil."
Priyanshi grinned as she asked, "Woh chaar bondon waala?"
"Wh..what??" Neil choked out.
Priyanshi slapped his arm lightly and replied "Just like that add..arre woh waali..chaar bondon wala ujala?! That blue liquid they use after washing clothes especially on the white ones..!"
Neil was amused and irritated as well. He was about to give her an equally smart reply but just than his cell phone rang.
It was Radhika aka his Chashni, calling him.
Smiling softly he answered the call and moved a little away from Priyanshi.
"Neil..." he moved his phone a little away from his ear as Radhika shrieked loudly.
"Yaar Chashni..chillao mat! Mujhe sunai deta hai dhang se!"
"Ho kaha tum? Prerna aunty called me and she sounded so worried, where are you exactly? Couldn't you just tell Prerna aunty that you were going somewhere!" Radhika blabbed, concerned about Neil.
"O meri Chashni!..." Neil was interrupted by Arjun's voice. Neil shook his head and chuckled as he heard Arjun say, "She's mine!"
"Arjun!!!" Radhika said in a strict sounding voice. "Aap bhi na! Incorrigible!"
Then followed the sound of Radhika moaning. Shit!! Time to end the call.
Neil fumbled with his words, "Chashni I am all fine. Just going back home. And I am ending the call as I don't want to bleach wash my ears. Bye!"
With a slight shake of his head, Neil turned back, smiling slightly. Somewhere in his heart he was hoping that Priyanshi would still be there but she wasn't. Neither she was there nor there was the cat he had saved.
He looked around but found no one, did he imagined all this? Was this Priyanshi a part of his imagination? With a careless shrug, Neil waved that topic off his mind and went away.
That night as he laid on the bed, his mind was occupied by some amusing thoughts instead of the mundane and sad ones.
Next Morning
Neil keenly watched the every move his Mom made. She hadn't said a word to him since last night, after he returned back home. Sigh. She was still mad at him for what he had done.
"Mommmaaa..."
No response
"Maatae..."
Still no response. His mother just came and placed a plate of pancakes in front of him.
"Matashree..." Neil called her again but only received a jar of maple syrup.
"Maaa...baat karo na! I said sorry na! I won't do it again..pakka!" Neil said as he held his mother's hand.
Still he got no answer. His mom just started venting out her anger and frustration on her share of pancakes.
Neil sighed, "Poor pancakes!!"
This earned him a hard glare from his mother, who stopped murdering the poor pancake and pointed a fork at him. "I am not talking to you!"
"Mom..."
"Meri Maaa!!"
"Meri pyaari mumma!!"
A sob escaped her lips and Neil engulfed her in a hug
"You know how much worried I was! Aage se kabhi aisa kiya na..." Neil rubbed her back lightly.
"Sorry Mom. Actually andhera bohot ho Gaya thha na toh bas ghutan hone lagi thhi. That's why I went out for some air."
Neil's mom broke the hug and cupped his face in her hands, "Neil...son..trust me, one day you will get a girl who will love you unconditionally and will lighten up the dark room of your heart."
Neil didn't replied but just nodded. Long ago he has lost the faith of light being eating the darkness of his life. After all he had lost his one and only love, his Sam to someone else.
Few Kilometers Away
She adjusted the CFL bulb. Her lower lip between her teeth, being chewed on mercilessly, there she stood on the chair fixing the bulb.
She was wearing knee length shorts, loose t-shirt, her hair tied in a loose bun, "Ho Gaya!!" Priyanshi yelled out happily, satisfied with her work as the bulb she was trying to adjust in the lamp, got fixed and now was working.
"Dekha Casper! I fixed it by myself! I rock, don't I?!"
"Wuff!" came a little appreciative bark from Casper, Priyanshi's Chihuahua.
Priyanshi took the little Casper in her arms and went towards her kitchen.
"Juno, Bunny, Browny, Capone!! Come here guys...its breakfast time!"
And just 10 seconds later, voices of tapping of numerous feet's came.
There is front of Priyanshi, now stood her other 4 pets, one still in her arms. Juno, Capone and Casper were her dogs, while Bunny and Browny were her cats. She placed their breakfast bowl in front of them, then went to check on "Blue", the cat she and Mr. Ujala (Neil) had rescued last night.
"Hey sweetheart..you feeling okay?"
A weak meow answered her question. Priyanshi softly caressed Blue's hurt leg.
"Come lets feed you." Priyanshi smiled and started talking to Blue as she walked back towards the kitchen, with Blue in her arms.
"You know Mr. Blue, I named you after that guy who saved you. You remember Mr. Ujala?"
"Meoooww.."
"Cute guy! And a good one too. He risked his life to save yours. Sweet."
"Meeooww.."
"The next time we meet him, we will thank him properly."
Back at Neil's place
"Hiccup..hicc..up..hiccu.p...hic.." Neil hiccuped loudly.
He poured down a glass of water and drank it but still his hiccups weren't ending. He tried other methods too stop the hiccups but he continued hiccuping.
"Hhmm...koi toh hai Jo is waqt badi siddat se tumhe yaad kar raha hai! Tabhi yeh hichkiyan band nahi ho rahi gain!" laughed his mother as Neil dranks another glass of water.
Priyanshi's place
"Hope we will meet soon Mr. Ujala" chirped Priyanshi.
