Can I begin by saying that adore Neil? I just do. He's such a well written, layered character and the actor is doing a fabulous job.
Now to the topic. When Sam told him that she didn't love him in that way, Neil's expressions were painful. Like he had hit rock bottom and knew it couldn't get worse. But as she continued talking, he realised that they have been friends first and foremost and that it's not her fault that he has fallen in love with her. Then how can he deprive her of his friendship? So he wipes his tears, turns around and becomes the friend she wants. This is the depth of feelings he has for her. He will do whatever makes her happy. She couldn't bear to be separated from him and it was tearing her apart to be indecisive. So he made the decision for her. No matter that it is the worst thing for him. If she's happy, then it's all worth it.
And Sam? I think deep down she knows Neil was lying about his feelings - lying that he didn't love her. But it suited her to play along and she did. But if you look at all the things she said to him in today's episode, it betrays deeper feelings than just friendship. How she was ready to do whatever Neil wanted, how she said Neil will have the first claim over her. It is this that makes me think that Sam, in fact, does love Neil more than that as a friend. Let's see if she realises it.
