Part 1 - The disturbing anonymous call31st December 2009 - Inside Siddhant's ApartmentThe vociferous ring tone pierced through his eardrums astounding him and breaking into his thoughts like an intruder. Rooting in his bed, his hands ran past earphones, banana peels and socks and finally; he found the expensive handset shoved in a pair of socks. He had taken a while to find his mobile but the deafening sound kept on ringing and he felt that the phone call must be urgent.
Without delaying, he paused at the description which glowed back at him. 'Private Number' was all that was written on the oiled screen. His fingers trembled at the green button and then finally, he gave it a gentle push and raised it to his ear.
But how would he know that the next minute of his life would be torturing, baffling, angering and worst of all petrifying? The young youth who was known for his fearless behaviour and egoistical acts would be afraid from an anonymous caller.
For the first few seconds of the call, no one spoke up but only sounds of spluttering and coughing were heard. Siddhant could feel that the caller was certainly going to say something negative but he didn't attempt to disconnect.
Finally a dull and heavy voice whispered "You are Siddhant Modi, do I follow?" Struck with confusion and fear, Siddhant gave himself a minute to make way past the brainwaves which were mounting in his head. With the heaviness and depth in the voice, he could tell that the caller was a male and in his forty's.
"Yes - this is - Siddhant Modi.." he stammered wiping the sweat which was formed on his upper lips with the back of his hand. But before his hand brushed off his face, he realised that he was wholly sweating by the heavy exhaling which he heard from the other side of the phone.
"I have only called to warn you, Mr Modi.." said the caller manipulating the hard sarcasm and anger which was clearly known to Siddhant whose hands were trembling non-stop. But then finally the caller gave the whole description and muttered his last words "You will see what I mean, tomorrow... in Sanjeevani.."
And then the line had went dead leaving nothing but silence which seemed like a panic to Sid. He didn't wait any more and left his apartment half swearing and half praying. He had already sensed that something ominous would certainly happen tomorrow and then the phone call had added to it.
His grasp tightened every passing minute on the steering wheel and before he knew, he had collided with a tree trunk and the sounds of blaring horn were bursting in the silent street as his head lay on the steering wheel, darkness spread in his vision..
1st January - Inside Dr Keerthi's cabin"When will Sid realise his duties?" complained Abhimanyu dialling the same number for the umpteenth time. "It's high time since his duty has started and no news of him, Dr Keerthi.."
"What's more, it's 1st January. I thought, he'd make a fresh start.." she replied sighing and rolling her eyes in the wrong manner. Scratching her heel against the polished tile, she vigorously stomped criticizing "What will we say to Sir..?"
"It's time, I go and pay him a visit and if he is still lounging in his bed, I will blow off his skull.." declared Abhimanyu thrusting his white coat and stethoscope leaving angrily towards the entrance.
Halting beside the glass door, Riddhima knocked meekly on the brittle glass and waited to be appointed. Swinging around, Dr Keerthi smiled at Dr Riddhima and gestured her to proceed inside. She could tell that Dr Keerthi was angry and right now, she needed her coffee cup but unfortunately Riddhima had only got files to give her...
"Dr Keerthi, these files contain an overview report from the new interns.." she started placing them on the table in front of her. It was not more than three files and Dr Keerthi sensed what Dr Riddhima was about to say. "But, one intern, Dr Siddhant Modi has not completed the overview report like last time.." she added secretly relieved.
Sighing, Dr Keerthi accepted the files and muttered "He's not even arrived for his duty yet, so I can't expect anything but negligence from him.."
The way, the flickering of pages happened in front of her green eyes, Riddhima could tell that Dr Keerthi was hardly interested in the overview reports at the current moment. Retracing her steps, she didn't notice that she knocked the peon which stood behind her with heaps of files.
The noise was as clamouring as a glass breaking to Dr Keerthi and it was enough to wind her up, so she erupted angrily "Dr Riddhima, can you please be a bit responsible..?"
And then she had turned to the peon and added "Do you do your job with your eyes and brain shut? Pick up these files at once and leave my cabin!"
"Yes Dr Keerthi.." And he had scooped up the files, placed them on the table and escaped muttering a few mouthful of swears..
Dr Riddhima didn't know whether it was right for her to be here so she had followed the peon leaving a disappointed and dismayed doctor..
