I'm South Indian. Our languages are in a different language family all together.

(Unofficially, all the mentioned languages in the constitution could be considered national languages.) If you want a history lesson, a section wanted it to be the national language. A section, led by the Southerners, but others as well, were vehemently against it. Thus the compromise of Hindi in the Devangari script and English to be the official languages of the Union of India. English was supposed to phased out. But yeah, other than the fact that no way in hell would that go down well, it also didn't happen for practical reasons.

Neither Jana Gana Mana (national anthem) nor Vande Mataram are in Hindi. They're actually in Bengali, but highly sanskritised Bengali in order to make it more understandable to the greater population.
