So they've finally come to the part where Dadhichi makes his sacrifice. But if he does that, where is the need of showing him as having digested all the weapons of the devas?
In the D&D2 thread, I described the story about why Indra needed to go to Dadhichi. It was b'cos Dadhichi was the only one who's tapabal matched Twastha's. Also, contrary to what the precap shows, Dadhichi didn't volunteer his body upfront. There too, there is a story.
The story is that once the Ashwin twins had been denied by Indra some vedic information they wanted, they approached Dadhichi for it. Dadhichi told them that he had been warned that if he had ever disclosed that, his head would burst into smithereens. However, he was still willing to do it, but the Ashwins refused to be the cause of his untimely death. So they substituted his head w/ that of a horse, which then imparted the knowledge the Ashwins wanted. After it was done, the horse's head exploded, and the Ashwins put back Dadhichi's head.
Therefore, when Indra needed the weapon after the defeat and Brahma had told him about what's needed, he and the Ashwin twins approached Dadhichi and asked him for his bones. Dadhichi took an yogic pose and gave up his life, and his bones were then used by Vishwakarma to construct the Vajra. That then became Indra's eternal weapon.
I too am sad to see Dadhichi go, and wish Tulkaram Omble all success in his future shows. Maybe he'd be a good choice for one of the rishis in the Mahabharata (not Drona or Kripa, however).
On a different note, one thing I'm not getting here. If Mahadev has told Narada and others that Indra needs to be punished by Jalandhar for his misdeeds, then why is he this time sending Kartikeya to fight? Did Kartikeya participate in the original war w/ Jalandhar? Kartikeya would be flattened if he went to war against Jalandhar.
Some other comments today, since I just caught up w/ this week's episodes just now. I liked Jalandhar rebuffing Vrinda for being a bhakt of the devas - actually Vishnu. He could have told her how Vishnu did cheat Rahu and the asuras at Samudra manthan - that episode was narrated to him by Rahu. Actually, I'm not liking Vrinda at all - her image of being too much of a contrarian flies in the face of what she's famous for. I can't imagine Jalandhar wanting to marry someone who is a bhakt of Vishnu, who he defeated and spared only b'cos of Lakshmi's appeal to him.
