Arjuna—-Short update:
Arjuna was an ambidextrous master archer and the third Pandava brother. The son of Indra, Arjuna is said to have been well-built and extremely handsome. His prowess as the greatest warrior of his time is detailed over a series of anecdotes in Mahabharata and form a substantial part of the narrative.
It is said that once Guru Dronacharya decided to test all his students in their skill of archery. He hung a wooden bird from the branch of a tree and then summoned his students. He asked them to aim for the bird's eye and then asked them what they could see. Student after student replied that they could see the garden, the tree, flowers, etc. Drona asked them to step aside and not shoot. When it was Arjuna's turn, he told his Guru that the only thing he could see was the bird's eye. This satisfied the Guru into allowing Arjuna to shoot the bird unfailingly.
This skill in archery went on to play an unusual role in his life, in that it won him the hand of Draupadi, his first wife, the daughter of Drupada, king of Panchala. Drupada held a contest to choose a suitable match for his daughter. A wooden fish was suspended high above a reflective pool of oil; furthermore, the fish rotated. Contestants were required to string a heavy bow and then hit the eye of the rotating fish, but were allowed to aim only by looking at the fish's reflection in the pool of oil. Many princes and noblemen vied for the hand of the princess of Panchala. It was Arjuna, who alone was able to accomplish the set task.
After the first return of the Pandavas to the Kuru lands, Arjuna was entrusted with the military expedition to the north, to collect tribute for the Rajasuya yagya. Arjuna achieved his task as much with marriages as war victories
More importantly, he was instrumental in keeping Yudhishthira safe from the focused attacks of the Kauravas. He also decimated an entire Akshauhini in one single day.
After the conclusion of the war, the Pandavas perform the Asvamedha Yagna to expand their territory. The yagna required a horse be let loose to wander where it will. The kings upon whose lands the horse wandered had a choice to accept the master of the horse as their liege lord or battle the accompanying host. Led by Arjuna, the host received the submission of many kings and consolidated the Pandavas' dominion till the end of their days.
