Jalandhar has no obligation to be monogamous. It's not exactly a requirement. Polygamy (well polygyny mostly) was pretty common back then.

Also remember that at some point he has to lose his way so that Mahadev would be justified in killing him. Right now he is still in the positive stage. I think Indra's poison is the creatives' way of doing this: ultimately Jalandhar going evil will be Indra's fault.
