Once Shiva went on mount mekal in central india and started doing intense meditation due to which his body started sweating. the sweat collected into a little pool from which a little girl arose. Mahadev gave her the name Narmada which means the sight of whom gives immense happiness. she started flowing in the form of a river. As she took birth from Mahadev's body she is called Shiva-putri or shiva's daughter (just like Ganesh took birth from Parvati's body). All pebbles and stones in her river bank naturally occur in the form of shiva-linga which can be seen even today. Narmada is also considered as more holy than Ganga as Ganga comes every year in the form of a black cow to take bath in Narmada and wash away her impurities.
