I've heard that Shiva gave Raavan a lingam and told that if he takes it to Lanka and establishes it over there with him then he would be undefeatable. But said not to place the lingam in ground or else it could not be taken else where.

Vishnu asked Ganesh to help Devtas and Ganesh took a form of Child and saw Raavan. Raavan saw it was time for Sandhyavandhana but he can't keep the lingam down as Raavan wasn't near lanka yet. So he asked (Ganesh) Child if he could hold it for him till he finishes his Sandhyavandhan. Ganesh obliged but said its too heavy he can't hold for more time.

Ganesh said its too heavy and can't hold any longer but Raavan insisted on him holding it longer but Ganesh put the lingam to the ground and left the place. Raavan came back and saw the lingam in ground he tried to remove he couldn't. Thus Ganesha Spoiled it for Raavan.

That Place is near Karnataka, I forgot that place ( Found it Mahabaleshwar Temple at Gokarna) and as Ganesh helped here Ganesh has prominant place and is said to be so large there.

Looking at the number of stories seen in the forums i don't know how many Vaardhan's Raavan got from Shiva!
