REshu Pongal is the harvest festival for all Tamilians.
Sankranthi for kanndigas and Telugu.
The first harvest is made into Pongal in a new earthern pot.
Pongal means boiling over.
When we make the sweet pongal we allow it boil over.
meaning let ur happiness and prosperity boil over.
The word pongal itself refers to the "boiling over" of milk and rice during the month of Thai. The saying "Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum" meaning "the commencement of Thai paves the way for new opportunities" is often quoted regarding the Pongal festival.Tamils thank the Sun god (Surya) for the good harvest and consecrate the first grain to him on this 'Surya Mangalyam'. Tamilians decorate their homes with banana and mango leaves and embellish the floor with decorative patterns drawn using rice flour.[

In Tamilnadu Makar Sankaranthi is known as Pongal. Its an harvest Festival. Its celebrated on the first day of "Thai" Tamil month.

varaali, it's not only Pongal but also Makar Sankrant, Lohri in other parts of India. Kite flying is a major event in Mumbai, Gujarat. In Maharashtra it's exchange of Ladoos of Til & Gud.

Purna Kumbh mela is starting from Makar Sankrant.
