Sanskrit literature : -
Sati, the first consort of Lord Shiva, immolated herself at the Daksha yagna, sacrificed herself. Sati was reborn as Parvati. the daughter of mountain king Himmavat (Himalayas). Shiva withdrew himself from the world & immersedin deep meditatipon. In the meanwhile, Tarakasur, ravaged the earth. It was realised by the Devas that only the son of Lord Shiva could defeat Trakasur, Surapdama & his companions. So they plotted Kamadeva to shoot an arrow towards Shiva so as to make him fall in love with Parvati. When Kama aimed his arrow Shiva opened his third eye & burned Kamadeva to ashes. The sparks of the fiery seeds were unbearale even for Agni; this fire was transported by the river Ganga into the Saravana forestinto a pond called 'Saravana Poigai' (located at the mouthes of Ganga) where the sparks became 6 childrens. They were raised by 6 Krittikas - the stars that make up the Pleaides, earning the name Kartikeya.Parvati combined this babies into one earning the name - Shanmukha or Arumuga. Since he was born in Saravana, he was also called as 'Saravanabhava'. murugan became the supreme general of demi-gods & led them to victory. The 6 sites whereat which Karikeya sojourned victory against Surapadman are Tiruttanikai, Swamimalai, Tiruvavinankudi (Palani), Pazhamudirsolai, Tirupparamkunram and Tiruchendur. Hindu Epics :- The first elaborate account of Karthikeya's origin occurs in the Mahabharat. In a complicated story, he is said to have been born from Agni and Svaha, after the latter impersonated the six of the seven wives of the Saptarishi (Seven Sages). The actual wives then become the Pleiades. Karthikeya is said to have been born to destroy the Asura. Indra attacks Karthikeya as he sees the latter as a threat, until Shiva intervenes and makes Karthikeya the commander-in-chief of the army of the Devas. He is also married to Devasena, Indra's daughter. The origin of this marriage lies probably in the punning of 'Deva-sena-pati'. It can mean either lord of Devasena or Lord of the army (sena) of Devas. The Skanda Puran narrates that Shiva first married Dakshayani daughter of Daksha. Daksha never liked who symbolizes destruction, begs for food, dances in agraveyard & smeared with ashes. no possessions & no clothes. Daksha insults Shiva publicly in a yagna & Dakshayani immolates herself. The yagnais destroyed although protected by gods. Tarakasur believes that, because Shiva is an ascetic his son would never been born onto this earth. his remarriage was out of question hence the boon of getting killed by Shiva's son would give him invincibility.
The Devas manage to get Parvati married to Shiva, by making Manmatha (Kamadeva)the god of love to awaken him from penance, but Kamadeva incurred the Lord wrath as Shiva opened his third eye - 'Netri Kann' & being destroyed & resurrected. Shiva hands over the effulgence of the 3rd eye to Agni used to destroy him as he is alone capable of handling until it turns ino an offspring. But even Agni was tortured & handed it over to Ganga who in turn, deposits in a lake of reeds (saravan). Then Goddess Parvati, took the form of this water as she lone capable of taming the Tejas of Shiva. The child is finally born into the forest with 6 faces namely :- eesanam, sathpurusham, vamadevam, arogama, sathyojatham & adhomugan. He is first spotted & cared by 6 Krittikas & thus gets the name Kartikeya. As a young lad he destroys Tarakasur.
