Thanks for the original story, had they shown this during entire Navratri, it would have been great.

Mahishasur mardini is 18 handed Adhya Shakti. When we worship Adhya Shakti, it is alway Durga or Ambama form (they are just different names of Adhya Shakti). After accomplishing her task, she merged in Parvati & came out again on Deva's prayers to kill RB, DL, S, N & Co.
When she appeared everyone gifted her weapons, jewellery etc. But no one gave her mangal sutra ( atleast I haven't read anywhere). So her wearing sindur & mangalsutra is the an imaginary depiction, which must have been added by the Artists later on.

Mangal sutra I've never seen in any Bong Durga Puja - that was a Kalyug invention. But the other things that Shruti mentions are generally depicted, regardless of whether or not they were actually in vogue in the Satya Yuga.

Durga & Ambika may be the same, but there is that difference b/w Mahishashur & Shumbha stories - in the case of Mahishashur, she didn't look unmarried, whereas in Shumbha's case, she did, and in fact told every messenger of Shumbha that she'd only marry the one who could defeat her. 😆 An offer she did not make in Mahishashur's case.

The Saubhagya Symbols are added after she started getting worshipped in her idol or pics. When she appeared originally she was gifted & adorned with various ornaments which didn't include MS & sindur.
That's the main reason of this confusion. She is infact offered different Srigars on all the days of Navratri, that's because we want to see her in well decorated form.
Actually as Mahishasur mardini she is 18 handed only, as Shumbh-Nishumbh hantri she is 8 handed. All her forms have different depiction.

As Mahishashur Mardini, she's depicted w/ 10 hands, not 18 nor 8. See the images in the Durga Puja thread.

As per DSS which is more authentic Mahishasur mardini is 18 handed, not 10. Even in The Murti rahasya, Devi is 18 or 8 handed. This 10 handed version is seen only in Bangal. There is still no satisfactory explanation of why Lakshmi & Saraswati are considered Durgama's daughters. This version is again in Bangal. So this is folk tradition of various regions. When we are discussing the Sciptures, there is an proof in form of scripts to refer.

It's true the 10 handed Mahishasur Mardini is mostly restricted to Eastern Indian folklore. Also the fact that we depict Lakshmi and Sarasvati as Durga's daughters is because Durga is deeply rooted into the Bengali culture. People attach Durga visiting her parents equivalent to how any daughter visits her maternal home with her children. Kartik and Ganesha has always been her sons so to equate and have a complete family picture she is depicted as having 2 daughters. Both daughters however cannot be an ordinary woman hence the 2 consorts of the other 2 divine trinity are depicted as her daughters.

If you all see the durga mandap in any pandal, you will notice somewhere Lord Shiva's pic is there. You will notice that his whole form is never shown. My nani told me why. Shiva keeps peeking in every day to see how the Devi is treated at her home with lots of delicious food, bhog and ornament 😳 but on the last day of Vijaya Dashami when we bid adieu to the goddess the bhog that is served to her is just dahi-chura or chura mixed with water which is common man's food. When Durga goes back, Shiva asks her that she has come back with loads of pampering. Durga tells no I just had chura 😆 Shiva says nope I peeked and watched everyday hehehe😛

Thanks for filling in the real story. They could easily have filled up from last week Wednesday to Dushera w/ this, instead of the trite they did show. And this is such a well known story - not like one of those myriad tales of Sati that they showed.

The serial could have been a great companion to our Navratri/Durga Puja celebrations. Instead 😡

Seriously i do not see an iota of logic in whatever they are planning, they had so much scope in this track i really don't understand why they chose to do this way
