There is a build up track to mahishasur story. Ranbha and karanbha were doing tapas to gew swarga. Indra took the form of crocodile and killed Rambha. Karanbha continued his tapas and sought an indraghati putra. He married a mahishi and she became prepnant. But indra invaded their kingdom and killed karambha. The queen ran and gave birth to a son, later known as Mahishasur who later sought revenge from indra. Kab dikhayenge ye sab?

Yeah, that's the Ayappa story - we've discussed that in the Doubts & Discussions thread. Her name was Mahishi, and she wanted her death to happen only from offspring of 2 males - Mahadev & Narayan, so Vishnu took his Mohini roop & produced the baby 😆
