Mani Mahesh- Abode of Shiv Parvati -in the month of August/September the annual famous JATRA of Manimahesh commences from Laxmi-Narayana Temple in Chamba. The CHHARI is taken to the sacred lake of Manimahesh, which is one of the chief tirthas in the district. Off late people from north India and beyond have started visiting this sacred lake. The lake is situated at the height of 13,500 feet above sea level and at the base of Manimahesh Kailsah peak (18,564 feet), 92 km from Chamba, where pilgrims take holy dip. Manimahesh Kailash is a virgin peak. In 1968 an Indo-Japanese team led by Nandini Patel made an unsuccessful attempt to scale the peak. The devout attribute the failure to the divine prowesses of the holy mountain. On the margin of the lake is a small marble Shivaling called CHAUMUKHA.

Manimahesh is 27 km from Bharmour. During the mela days sufficient bus service is available upto Hadsar, 14 km from Bharmour. The pilgrimage is generally done in two stages. Between Dhanchho and Manimahesh lake, there are minor places of pilgrimage known as Bandar Ghati, Gauri Kund, Shiv Kalotri and Ganesh Ghati. The trek from Dhanchho to Manimahesh lake is difficult in patches. Just short of the lake is Gauri Kund where women take a holy dip before returning to home. The pilgrimage to Manimahesh is considered sacred like that of Amarnath, Badrinath and Rameshwarm. During the mela days several BHANDARAS are set-up for the benefit of pilgrims and meals are served free of cost. Pack animals are also available for those who do not want to carry their luggage themselves.

Bharmani Devi: Bharmani Devi, the patron Goddess of Bharmaur is 4 km from Bharmour on a steep gradient, located on a ridge among the forest and has a facinating view of Budhal valley. According to a legend Goddess was residing in the Bharmaur Chaurasi, before the advent of pilgrims. When Lord Shiva first appear in Bharmaur, the Goddess shifted her seat to the hill top known as Bharmani. It is said that Goddess passed a command to Lord Shiva that the journey to the sacred Manimahesh peak would be incomplete unless the devotees visit her place. Since then it is a ritual to visit Bharmani Devi, before the journey to Manimahesh.

Legend of Mani Mahesh

it is believed that Lord Shiva created Manimahesh after he marriedGoddess Parvati, who is worshipped as Mata Girja. There are many legends narrated linking Lord Shiva and his show of displeasure through acts ofavalanches and blizzards that occur in the region.[1]

Legend also mentions that Shiva performed penance on the banks of Manimahesh Lake. In the same vein, it is mentioned that Gaddis, the tribes of this region, adopted Lord Shiva as their deity. Gaddis are the people who reside in the Gaddi Valley which is the name of the upper regions ofRavi River where the Mount Chamba Kailash lies. Further, according to the legend, the Shiva, who lived in Mount Kailash, the highest mountain of the state, gifted the Gaddis with a Chuhali topi (pointed cap), which they wear traditionally along with their other dress of chola (coat) and dora (a long black cord about 10'15 m long). The Gaddis started calling the land of this mountainous region as 'Shiv Bhumi' ("Land of Shiva") and themselves as devotees of Shiva. The legend further states that before Shiva married Parvati at Mansarovar Lakeand became the "universal parents of the universe", Shiva created the Mount Kailash in Himachal Pradesh and made it his abode. He made Gaddis his devotees. The land where Gaddis lived extended from 15 miles (24 km) west of Bharmaur, upstream of the confluence of Budhil and Ravi rivers, up to Manimahesh. Manimahesh was also considered the abode of the three Lords of the universe namely, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. Manimahesh was reckoned as the heaven (Kaliasa) of Lord Shiva. The waterfall seen at the Dhancho on the way to Manimahesh Lake, and which emanates from the lake, was considered as the heaven (Vaikunta) of Vishnu. The heaven of Bramha is cited as a mound overlooking the Bharmaur city. The Gaddis also believe that Shiva resides in the Mount Kailash for six months, whereafter he moves to the netherworld handing over the reigns to Lord Vishnu. The day he departs to the netherworld is observed by the Gaddis reverentially every year, which is the Janmashtami day, the eighth day of the month of Bhadon (August), the birthday of Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Shiva returned from the netherworld to Bharamaur at the end of February, before the night of his wedding and this day is observed as the Shivratri day; Gaddis observe this also as a festive day since Shiva and Parvati returned to Mount Kailash in the Gaddi land.

Etymology of 'Manimahesh' signifies a "jewel (Mani) on Lord Shiva's (Mahesh's) crown". According to a local legend, the moon-rays reflected from the jewel can be seen from Manimahesh Lake on clear full moon night (which is a rare occasion). However, it has been inferred that such a phenomenon could be the result of reflection of light from the glacier that embellishes the peak in the form of a serpent around Shiva's neck.

A legend in which Lord Shiva himself is tricked is narrated. According to this narration linked to Dhancho where pilgrims spend a night on their way to Manimahesh Lake, Lord Shiva, pleased with the devotion of one his ardent devotee Bhasmasur (anasura or demon) bestowed a boon, which gave powers to Bhasmasur under which Bhasmasur touching any one would reduce that person in to ashes. Bhasmasur wanted to try this boon on Shiva himself. He, therefore, followed Shiva to touch him and get rid of him. However, Shiva managed to escape and enter into the waterfall at Dhancho and take shelter in a cave behind the rolling waters of the fall. Bhasmasur could not get through the waterfall. Then, Lord Vishnu intervened and killed Bhasamasur. Since then the fall is considered holy[

A rare event of the first sun's rays falling on the Mani Mahesh peak is seen in reflection in the lake like saffron tilak. This display in the lake has enhanced the legendary belief of the Gaddis on the sanctity of Manimahesh Lake at the base of the Mount Kailash, which they visit on an annual pilgrimage. This event has also contributed to the practice of taking bath in the lake on Janmashtami day or Radhashtami day, fifteen days after the birth of Lord Krishna.

Shri Trimbarkeshwar

Shri Trimbarkeshwar Jyotirlinga is situated in Nasik in the state of Maharashtra. This temple is constructed in the Indo Aryan style. This temple is near to the mountain Brahmagiri which is near the river Godavari.

Thousands of devotees every year take bath in the holy river of Godavari and then take the blessings of Shri Trimbarkeshwar. Accordingly to the Shiv Purana it is because of the humble request of Godavari, Gautam Rishi and other gods that Lord Shiva agreed to reside here and assumed the famous name Trimbakeshwar.

Once there lived a sage Gautam with his wife Ahilya. The aim of their life was sacrament and good of others. Once there came a drought. Unselfish Gautam Rishi made a pit and filled it with water by pacifying God Varuna. Seeing this, the wives of other sages felt jealous. They made a conspiracy to drive Gautam Rishi and his wife out of the vicinity. All the sages came together and started worshipping Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha was pleased with their devotion assumed form and being told the boon to be granted discouraged the sages from doing so. But when the sages did not agree he blessed them accordingly and disappeared.

As soon as the stick touched the cow, the cow dropped down dead.At that moment the other evil sages came there and criticized Gautam Rishi for his cruelty. They told him to leave this place and go away. Gaumtam Rishi humbly accepted the decision. The sages suggested that Gaumtam Rishi should circumambulate the earth thrice, the Mountain Brahmagiri 100 times, holy bath in the Ganges and worshipping of 1 crore Shivalingas. After performing this penance, Lord Shiva appeared before them. Sage Gautam asked to be freed from the crime. Lord Shiva told Sage Gautam that he was innocent and pure. The other sages had planned a conspiracy against him. After that Lord Ganesha assumed the form of a cow and entered the courtyard of Gautam Rishi's house and started eating grass and plants. Rishi Gautam saw this and started hitting the cow with a stick.
Listening to this Sage Gautama was surprised, but said that if this weren't done he would have never met lord Shiva. After this Gautam Rishi asked Ganga from Lord Shiva. Shiva requested Ganga to flow down and make Sage Gautam pure. After that Ganga flowed down. Lord Shiva told Ganga to stay there eternally for the good of all the people. On the request of all the Gods, Lord Shiva resided by the river Gautami by the name Trimbakeshwar (one of the Jyotirlingas.). This Jyotirlinga named Trimbak, is the one which fulfills everyone's desires. It liberates all from their sins and miseries.

PANCHARAMA KSHETRAS

Since tarakasura track is going on i thought it would be prudent to update about these Five Temples in Andhra Pradesh:

Story of Pancharama temples

Maharshi Marichi was the son of Lord Brahma. Prajapathi who was the son of Maharshi Marichi married 13 daughtersof King Daksha. Diti devi was the most elder among them. Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakasipa were the two sons of Diti devi. As they grew up they were habituated to cruelty towards all the world and were demons by character. Lord Maha Vishnu in His Varaha avatara and Narasimhavatara got rid of them for the protection of the world. Diti devi who was sad about the death of her children served kasyapa and concieved. Lord Indra who was afraid that Diti may give birth to another demon entered into her womb and destroyed the foetus with his vajrayudha by making it into seven pieces. Again he cut each piece into seven pieces. Still the foetus survived because of the Shiva vrata phala done by Diti devi. The broken parts of the foetus were born as Saptha Maruttulu. They went to swargaloka and were among Indra parivara.

Diti devi once again went to her husband Kasyapa and requested him to bless her with children. Kasyapa advised her to do penance for Lord Shiva for ten thousand years. Obeying her husbands order Diti devi did a great penance for Lord Shiva and with his blessings served her husband gave birth to Vajranga. His body was as tough as diamond (vajra) and was a great warrior . Diti devi wanted her son to defeat Indra. Vajranga obeyed his mothers wish and defeated Lord Indra and conquered swargaloka. Diti devi was happy that her son defeated Lord Indra. Lord Indra and all other dieties were prisoned by Vajranga and were punished. Lord Brahma came to know about Vajranga and He went to Vajranga with Kasyapa who was his father. Lord Brahma told to Vajranga that it was not fair to occupy swargaloka and ordered him to let all the dieties free. Vajranga said that Indra was bad and he was the person who broke my mothers baby into pieces in her womb. That is why I punished him. Vajranga obeyed Lord Brahma and he left Lord Indra and his parivara who were prisoned. Vajranga said that he was not interested to conquer any rajya but he was just obeying his mothers wish . He requested Lord Brahma to teach him about "Tatwagnana".Lord Brahma was happy with Vajrangas request and told him that "satwika swabhava"(satwa is one of the three gunas satwa, rajas , tamas) is the essence of Tatwagnana. Lord Brahma also created Varangi and gifted her to Vajranga and went back to his Loka. From then Vajranga practised satwika swabhava and he left all his demon behaviour and was without enemies. But his wife could not be like him and served him with kamabhava.

Vajranga was happy and asked his wife what was her wish. Varangi asked to bless her with a child who would defeat Lord Vishnu and can conquer all the Lokas (world including heaven). Vajranga was in dilema and understood that his wife wished enemity with dieties. But as he was practising satwaguna he was thinking what to decide. At last he decided to do penance for Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma was satisfied with the penance of Vajranga and appeared before him and asked him what was his wish. Then Vajranga prayed to Lord Brahma and asked him for a child with great strength and taponidhi. Lord Brahma remembered Lord Shiva in his mind for a moment and blessed Vajranga that his wish would come true. After some time with the blessings of Lord Brahma Varangi gave birth to a male child. He was named Taraka by his grand father Kasyapa. The birth of this child was accompanied by bad signs all over the world making all the people afraid that a major disaster may take place. The child grew like a mountain and was with great strength. One day Taraka took permission from his mother to go to forest and went to madhuvana for penance to get the blessings of Lord Brahma.

Tarakasura went to Madhuvana and with blessing of his guru started penance for Lord Brahma. He did penance by standing on one foot for hundred years. For hundred more years he did penance looking at sun. After that for hundred more years by taking only water. For hundred more years by only taking air. He continued his penance for hundred more by standing in water and hundred more years by hanging upside down, hundred years standing in fire, hundred more by inhaling smoke by hanging to branches of tree. As a result of the Tarakasura's great and violent penance a fire was generated in his head (tapojwala) and was burning devaloka. Then all those suffering dieties and Marharshis went to satyaloka and requested Lord Brahma to protect them.

After knowing the problem of deities Lord Bhama appeared before Tarakasura and asked him what was his wish. Tarakasura prayed to Lord Brahma and asked for two wishes.

  • No one in this world should be as strong as me.
  • A male child born from siva virya (semen of lord shiva) should only be able to kll me.
Then lord Brahama blessed Tarakasura with his wishes would come true and went back to Satyaloka. With the blessing of lord Brahama Tarakasura conquerd all the world (trilokas) and was punishing deities. He took all the great things from all deities forcefully.

PENANCE OF TARAKASURA FOR LORD SHIVA

Taraka was not satisfied with the boon's given by Lord Brahma. He started penance for Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was happy with the penance of Taraka and appeared before him and asked him what was his wish. Taraka asked lord shiva for a Shivalinga that can protect him from all harm. Lord Shiva blessed him with a Shiva Linga that was 50 feet long. He also blessed him that as long as the shiva linga was with him no one can cause him physical harm. Taraka was happy with his boon and wore the shiva linga in his neck and started in rule the world.

As they were being harassed by Tarakasura all the dieties went to Lord Brahma once again and requested to help them. Lord Brahma said that as he himself blessed Taraka he could not kll him. He also said that Taraka will be klled as a result of his own bad deeds. Lord Brahma also said that the child born from Siva virya would kll him. He also said that Dakshayani who was wife of Lord Shiva was reborn to Himavantha in the form of Parvathi. Brahma said that only Parvathi can be able to marry Lord Shiva and can give birth to child from Siva virya . Lord Brahma advised deities to find a way to Siva Kalyana with Maa Parvathi. Lord Brahma after advising deities went to Tarakasura and said that it was not good to occupy Devaloka and asked to give back deities their kingdom. Tarakasura obeyed the word of Lord Brahma and went back to Bhuloka and was ruling the world.

Lord Indra with all his deities decided to ask Manmadha (lord of love) to do the deva karya (Siva kalyana). Then Lord Indra called Manmadha and requested him to divert Lord Shiva from his penance and make him attracted towards Ma Parvathi who was serving Lord shiva. Lord Manmadha was proud that he was assigned with great job and said that he would make it. Manmadha with his five strength (5 flower arrow, Bow with butterflies, pretty girls, minister vasantha, his friend Moon) went to Himalayas where Lord Shiva was in penance.

All the deities who were suffering by the cruel deeds of Taraka prayed Lord Shiva to help them get rid of Taraka. Lord Shiva blessed them that their wish would come true. As lord Shiva blessed them after some time lord Shiva married Parvathi and Lord Kumara swamy was born from Shiva veerya. (Semen of Lord Shiva). In due course of time kumaraswamy grew up and became the leader of all army of deities. Then all the deities prayed to Lord Kumaraswamy and asked him to kll Tarakasura.

In the war between deities and Taraka, Kumaraswamy and Taraka were face to face. Kumaraswamy used his Sakthi aayudha to kll Taraka. By the power of Sakti aayudha the body of Taraka was torn into pieces. But to the astonishment of Lord Kumaraswamy all the pieces reunited to give rise to Taraka. Kumaraswamy repeatedly broke the body into pieces and it was re-unified again.

Lord Kumaraswamy was confused and was in an embarrassed state then Lord Srimannarayana appeared before him and said "Kumara! Don't get depressed, without breaking the Shiva lingham worn by the asura you can't kll him" you should first break the Shiva lingham into pieces, then only you can kll Taraka Lord Vishnu also said that after breaking, the shiva lingham also will try to unite. To prevent the Linga from uniting all the pieces should be fixed in the place where they fall by worshipping them and building temples on them.

By taking the word of Lord Vishnu Lord Kumaraswamy used his Aagneasthra (weapon of fire) to break the Shiva lingham worn by Taraka. The Shiva lingham broke into five pieces and was trying to unite by making Omkara nada (Chanting Om).

According to legend, these five pieces were installed as Sivalingas at five different temples by Indra, Surya, Chandra, Vishnu and Kumaraswamy at the respective places. These places (or Aaramas) are as follows:
