In Hinduism there is no authority to rely on, there can be umpteen number of stories for any one event, for example in my home state of andhra there are myriad versions of stories intertwined with purana versions to legitimize the local gods or village gods with respect to shiva and parvati.Puranas are accepted as central authorities on such matters.
How ever whenever such stories are constructed it only shows the eagerness and bhakti of people to identify everything they worship with their beloved shiva and maa parvati. on the whole such interpolations should lead to overall re affirmation of bhakti.
In this case CV's should have such liberty but never should they misuse such freedom just in order to prolong or gain some TRP's such attempts will only backfire on the long run. successful TRPs can also be achieved by conforming to scriptural versions as seen by success of Ramayan in NDTV and the good old Mahabharata of BRchopra
