"Yes maa, I slept quite well" said Manyata as she helped herself with breakfast. J looked from her mother to her elder sister and rolled her eyes and continued with her breakfast.
Manyata unfolded the napkin and placed it on her lap and then continued to fill her plate with fruit and toast. General topics were discussed at the table and Manyata didn't feel like giving her opinion in any matter. She was looking toward the main entrance now and then. Her phone buzzed and she immediately grabbed and saw that it was Akash who was calling. Usually she would have been happy to see his call but today she didn't feel like talking to him. She cut the call and angrily placed the phone on the table and lifted the fork only to keep it back again.
"Where the hell is he? Usually he comes in even before the cock crows. What happened now?" thought Manyata as she looked toward the entrance again. She wanted to apologize to Uday and she had decided this as soon as she woke up. Not that she wanted to see him or anything she decided against the faint voice in her heart which called her a liar.
"I think I should call him. What was it, oh yes, speed dial 1," she said as she took her phone again and pressed 1 but she cut it immediately. "No.,,wait'what should I tell him"
"How about I'm sorry Uday?"
"No way, I won't say that. Why should I be sorry?"
"I think you should be sorry Manyata as you ran away"
"Ran away! You're making a mountain of a molehill"
"Message, yes that's what I should do" finally Manyata decided and started to message Uday. Unaware to Manyata, everyone was looking at her curiously trying to deduce what she was up to. Finally the Queen mother spoke "Manyata, you look worried. Is everything alright? Are you expecting anyone?"
Manyata looked up to see everyone looking at her expecting a reply. She had just typed the message and was contemplating whether to send it or not but as soon as The Queen Mother called her name she pressed the send button.
"Nothing Mataji, I'm'" she was about to complete when she heard a loud beep from somewhere near. She looked around and saw Uday walking toward them while looking into his phone. Manyata's heart did a double leap. She heaved a sigh and leapt from the chair in an undignified manner which made everyone gasp.
"Uday," she screamed ignoring everyone. "Tum kaha the ab tak?" Where were you? "Usually you appear here before the crack of dawn, what happened today?" she asked placing both her hands on her hips.
The Queen Mother smiled while King Brijraj cleared his throat and looked into his plate as if he had found something interesting there.
"Wow, bhabhi sa" said Maeneka looking at Komal "She looks just like her childhood doesn't she."
Komal smiled while Maeneka continued to speak while looking at Manyata.
"Manyata, you used to ask the same question to Uday every time he was late to meet you. And he always had a bar of chocolate with him to pacify you" she said and turned to Uday
"What have you brought today Uday?"
Uday didn't hear anything that was being said. He was looking wide eyed at Manyata. After last night's confrontation, he had expected a cold shoulder from her, but he was astonished at the reception her got from her. She was behaving as if she was desperately waiting for him and she looked genuinely angry and irritated. But then she knows to put up an act. Maybe she's trying to salvage her lost pride, he thought. But somehow his heart couldn't agree.
"Uday, uday beta'Uday" called Rajmata umpteenth time when he finally responsed
"Yes..yes Dadisaab," he stuttered
"Did you have breakfast? Please join us beta" she said smiling at him
"I had breakfast Dadisaab, thank you very much for asking. But il join you" he said walking toward the empty seat just beside the Queen Mother.
"Uday, you can sit here" said Manyata immediately before he could sit down.
Uday looked at her and narrowed his eyes. Komal looked from Uday to Manyata and said "Jayiye beta, aap humari beti ko naazar mat keejiye". Go ahead son don't upset her.
"Oh wow, what commanding power Princess Manyata" said Vijay which earned him a not so Princess look from Jai and she muttered "Whatever"
Manyata sat and waited for Uday to sit beside her. Uday pulled a chair and sat down and moved closer to her. "What the hell are you playing at Manyata?" asked Uday his eyes boring into hers
"Did you get my message?"
"Yes I did and no I didn't get the time to read it" he supplied before she could ask
"Didn't get the time? What were you doing hatching eggs?"
"That's your job sweetheart not mine. I was with Unnati, she has left for London today. I went to drop her"
"Unnati left, why she didn't call me. You must've forbidden her right"
"Yes, I did and I think you know why"
"You don't deserve a sorry from me, you oaf"
Uday raised his brows and gave a does-it-look-like-a-sorry-can-solve-everything kind of look.
Manyata turned away and concentrated on her empty plate.
"Brijraj, I think a storm is brewing up, what you think?" asked Queen mother in a very serious tone
"Yes Maa sahib, I think so too. The best option for us would be to take shelter before we get caught in between" said Brijraj and everyone started laughing and left Jai squirming.
"Now look what you have done" said Manyata turning to Uday
"Look who's talking 'Uday where were you and come sit here' what was that about?"
"Calm down Manyata, you should not lose your temper and not for theinsensitive devil sitting next to you" she told to herself and got up and excused herself while blushing as red as a tomato.
Uday shook his head basically to clear his mind. Had he heard right, no it cannot be. But he did hear it from her. She had called herself 'Manyata'. Uday was left pondering for a few minutes. Her eagerly awaiting him, the small lover's spat (well it looked like that) they just had and now she called herself Manyata, what could be all this? Is she really changing?
"No" Uday shook his head "last time he had fallen for this trick, not again Manyata, not again" he said to himself
"What is wrong with me?" asked Manyata as she lay on her bed looking at the ceiling. She just called herself Manyata. She who refused to change for anyone was calling herself the same name which implored her to accept all that comes with it. "Am I really a Princess? Do I really belong here with all of them and with him?"
"Him, why do I pull him in all my words and thoughts" she groaned
"Akash, is the one Monya" she said out loud but somehow the words seemed to fizz away. "Manyata" she said to herself out loud
"Rajkumari Manyata Kumari. Well it doesn't sound bad, does it?" she smiled and closed her eyes
"Ofcourse not Princess, it sounds just fine"
Manyata's eyes flew open to see Uday hovering above her.
"Don't you ever knock?" she asked trying to get up
"Shall I go out and knock and come in?" asked Uday wryly
"Yes and just keep going don't come back"
"Aww Princess, I don't think you mean that. Not after you sent the miss you message"
Manyata looked confused "Miss you message? I didn't send anything like that"
Uday took out his phone and began reading the message
"Uday where are you? Are you coming home today? Do you know how long I've been waiting"
Manyata let out a huff "I didn't hear a miss you in that"
"The message itself was miss you. So you missed me?" he asked as he lowered himself dangerously toward her.
"No it wasn't" she said as she cautiously shifted trying not to touch him in any way
"So why did you want to see me all of a sudden" he asked coming a bit more closer
"Uday get off me this instant" she screamed
"Am I touching you" he asked to which she nodded a NO
"I'm waiting Princess"
"I just needed to apologize for last evening" she said in one breath so that he could move away
"Apologize hmm, let me see, for leading me on or for making a fool out of me at the award night or for using Unnati against me or oh wait i know for screaming at me when I saved your skin"
Manyata looked wide eyed at the reproach. "Don't test my patience Udayveer Singh" she said coming back in full form. "Be glad that i wanted to apologize in the first place" she said her nose flaring
"And don't think I'm a fool Manyata" he said catching her hand and pulling her to him that she was pinned beneath him. Her hair was like a halo surrounding the stark white bed sheet. He was closer than ever but this time Manyata didn't feel the urge to push him off. Manyata felt like she was drowning in those deep dark pools and all this while she could just see herself in Uday's eyes. She might have been wrong but the way he looked at her, the way his heart was beating like the wings of a hummingbird, the way droplets of sweat formed on his upper lip; could all that be wrong too.
Suddenly she became aware of the position she was in and said "Uday you need to move" in a husky voice.
"Do you want me to Princess" he asked as he bent closer and just a mere inch of space was left between them. Manyata's heart raced but she didn't say anything. She couldn't say anything.
"Answer me Princess" urged Uday to which Manyata just closed her eyes.
Uday looked at her intently for a moment and swiftly got up. Manyata's eyes remained closed as though she was locking away a dream, the touch, the feeling. She smiled slightly.
"I should know better than to trust you Princess. I will find out this game you're playing with me and will answer you in your own way. Till then take care Princess Manyata" said Uday and walked out
Manyata's eyes flew open and saw Uday's retreating figure with eyes that stung with unshed tears.
