What's going on?

Varun Badola
Varun Badola, who was ousted from Sony's Comedy Circus, has still not been able to fathom why he scored so low resulting in his exit.

Badola is also shocked that his act was aired for just one-and-half minute whereas the other participants were given four minutes.

Ketaki Dave

Then some of the co-contestants, especially Kiran Karmarkar, passed uncharitable remarks against Varun instigating the other contestants to vote him out. "

I don't understand why my act was tampered with. I don't want to discuss anything more than this now," he quips. Incidentally, Ketaki Dave makes her exit from Comedy Circus this week.

Johny Lever in Comedy Circus

Much before Shekhar Suman and Navjot Sidhu came on board, Johny Lever was approached to judge STAR One's Great Laughter...

uch before Shekhar Suman and Navjot Sidhu came on board, Johny Lever was approached to judge STAR One's Great Laughter Challenge. Back then, the comedian was not willing to take the chair. "I wasn't comfortable pointing out mistakes or saying someone was bad. So, I politely declined and went as a guest for a few shows," informs Lever. Two years and one of his own shows Johny Ala Re later, the comedian has come around to be on the dais as a judge. The show that he's judging is Comedy Circus aired on Sony. Archana Puran Singh and Satish Shah are already sharing honours as the judges and Johny is the latest addition. "Initially I thought there's a risk in the concept of an actor teaming with a comedian. I insisted on seeing a couple of their episodes first. I found they have worked hard, the punches are spot-on, the presentation is good and the timing is perfect. That's when I decided to be a judge if only to guide them," explains the funster. So far, he has freaked out on the performances of a new boy Avinash and Ali Asgar, "who was hilarious as a historical character".

Sometime ago, Johny had introduced his own brand of humour in a stand-up show Johny Ala Re on Zee, but it didn't go down well with the viewers. "I was really disappointed. Initially, we made some technical mistakes by showing too many close-ups, kids and cars. I didn't get good co-artistes and some of the gags fell flat. Subsequently, we rectified it but by then the viewers had lost interest and weren't tuning in," he laments. That hasn't deterred him from his plans to come back with a new format in the near future.

Though he is a part of one, the king of comedy is not happy with the current crop of stand-up comedians. He points out that the genre is popular becaue it is the flavour of the season. He feels that the artistes are unable to bring any variation to the act. "A stand-up comedian has to bring the atmosphere alive with his words and expressions. It's not just about mimicking personalities," quips the ace stand-up artiste who's famous for his hilarious acts and was nicknamed VCR by Amitabh Bachchan. Reminiscing about a world tour in 1983, Lever recounts, "40 of us were in the troupe and on the last day I mimicked every actor's routine on the tour and Amitji said I was a VCR and everyone had to be careful because I observed them minutely."

Soon, Lever is planning to revisit his stand-up comedy act with shows in Kolkata and Mumbai. "I will show everyone what stand-up comedy is," declares the actor who's grown up watching Johny Whisky, Vinay Sagoo and Nagendra Kumar, established names in the field.

The actor has carved a niche as a master comedian on screen with films like Baazigar, Phir Hera Pheri to Fool 'N'Final. Lately, he has reduced the quantum of films devoting more time to family. "At one point I was doing so many films, I didn't know whether I was coming or going. Now, I have decided to be selective and do only well-etched roles," informs the actor who has five films in his kitty. He is looking forward to Hey Phasa which is a "good and clean comedy like the ones in the past". Another yaadgaar role according to him is in the Tharun Kumar- directed Hindi-Telugu bi-lingual.

'Yeh jo hai Satish Shah'

SATISH SHAH tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that he is ashamed when he watches his old performances

How would you rate yourself as a comedian?
I do not consider myself a comedian. I feel I am an actor who is good at comedy, with a great ability to see humour in anything around me. The biggest challenge for a comedy actor is to rise above the script. To succeed as a comedian, you have to have your own inputs. Very few writers have written subjects, which bring out comedy.

Do you regret having been typed as a comedian by the film as well as television industry?
Not at all. Because I feel that it is the gospel truth that comedy is
the toughest thing for an actor. If no one cries at a sad soliloquy, it does not affect the actor at all but if an actor cracks a joke and begets pin-drop silence, it does affect the actor.

How good are you as far as stand up comedy is concerned?
I have never done stand up comedy like Johny Lever has. I feel that stand up comedy is very difficult. I need another good actor to perform well. If I get a bad co-actor, I will not be able to perform well in comedy scenes. I am not a stylised Raaj Kumar who can tell my lines and get away.

How do you feel now that you have been appointed as one of the judges for 'Comedy Circus'?
I was surprised when I received the call asking me to take on the mantle of one of the judges for the show. I have not been following Indian cinema for the last several years. Frankly, I do not know which trend is the current one. I am at a loss as to what is being lapped up now as far as Hindi films are concerned. As one of the judges of the 'Comedy Circus', I am now in the process of judging these people before they are ready to do their stuff in front of me.

What is your take on Johny lever, as a comedian?
I feel that Johny Lever is a guarantee for laughter. I make it a point to watch a movie only if Johny Lever is there. I do not care who the hero of the film is. I was part of the scene in 'Anari No 1' with Govinda in which he played the character of Daler Peti by doing this comic sequence donning the garb of Daler Mehendi. When we were shooting the sequence, both Govinda and I were just spectators in the scene with Johny hogging the limelight and we did not mind it even a wee bit.

As compared to the leading man, most often the producers tend to take the comedian for granted. How do you cope with it?
I may sound immodest but the fact is that today I choose my own producers. There is absolutely no question of any producer taking me for granted for the simple reason that even if I like the script, I may not agree to do a film if I do not like the producer. Hence, you get to see me in very few films.

Okay, let me put it this way. Do you think big banners take comedians seriously?
Whether films or for that matter television, I have always been fortunate enough to be approached by big banners to work in their films. If they did not consider me seriously, do you think those producers would have cast me in their serials or films? I consider myself fortunate that people remember me till now for my performance in serials like 'Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi' and films like 'Masti' and 'Main Hoon Na'.

Do you think there is an absolute dearth of comedians on television as well as films today?
It is sad but true that though there are many stand- up comedians on television, there are very few comedians who can hold your attention on their own might. There are actors who think that they are comedians but have a wonky sense of comedy. Today as a viewer, you have several choices because you do not have to remain confined only to Doordarshan unlike in the past. Today I feel that the star on television is he who you see and then decide to stop surfing.

How would you evaluate your growth as an actor over the years?
It is now thirty years since I had started my career as an actor in films way back in 1977 after I passed out from the Pune Film & TV Institute. Evolution is on because that is the way of life. There is growth all the time in you whether as a person or as an actor. It is very difficult to evaluate your growth in terms of volume. One changes with time and tends to incorporate changes, especially if you happen to be techno savvy as well.

How do you rate yourself as a comedian when you watch your old films and TV serials?
I do not mind confessing that I am always ashamed of my old performances when I watch my old films objectively as a critic and inevitably I cringe and start sinking on my seat, especially when I watch my films on International flights. I feel that you improve in retrospect. As a normal human being, it is quite okay if you make mistakes but you repeat your mistakes only if you are a hard-core idiot.

After a little low key and flattish start, Comedy Circus that brings together television actors and professional comedians as partners to compete as stand-up comedy jodis is getting better and better. The show€™s third episode to be telecast today is a thematic comedy round of humour, wit, jokes and one-liners where the jodis will be dressed as different characters. The pairs will not only be judged on their comic acts but also based on how convincingly they manage to play the character they are dressed as.

For instance, Gujarati ben Ketki Dave will be dressed as a tapori fairy while her partner Pratap Fauzdar will be seen in Superman€™s costume. Kiran Karmakar, better known as Om of Kahani has turned Dr Salim and his comic partner Sunil Sawara plays Emperor Akbar, minus Anarkali, though. Tall, beautiful and vivacious Karishma Tanna dons the role of a Japanese tourist while the five-foot nothing Khayali will play her guide (to love?).

Swapnil Joshi will play the controversial Rakhi Sawant and her partner VIP will don the costume of mythological villain Ravan. Home-breaker Urvashi Dholakia, aka Monalika, turns teacher while her comedy partner Shakeel Siddiqui will become her student. And lastly, Ali Asgar and Kashif Khan will play Soni and Mahiwal respectively. After last week€™s elimination of Varun Badola and Deepak Dutta, it would be interesting to watch how well they play the characters. Wonder which jodi will get eliminated?

After daily soaps and the saas-bahu sagas, seems like it€™s time for comedy shows to rule the roost on TV. And it is not just comic soaps that are gaining popularity, but also comic reality shows that are raking in high TRPs. Post Star One€™s Great Laughter Challenge, Sony TV€™s reality show Comedy Circus is gaining a foot hold in the prime slots. And with every channel competing with one another to host the funniest of all shows, it is the audience who is the winner.

Tune into any channel today and you are bound to catch a stand-up comedian in action. And clearly, Indian viewers are lapping it all up. Swapnil Joshi, who played the role of Krishna in the serial Krishna says, "If you see the graph on TV, soaps, value-oriented serials, thrillers, saas-bahu dramas €" all took turns to rule TV. Comedy is next in line and it is definitely the next big thing on Indian television." And to make hay while the sun shines, Swapnil is now a part of Comdey Circus.

Like Swapnil, Kiran Karmarkar, still remembered as serious and sober Om of Kahani... has also turned to comedy with Comedy Circus. So what is making these stars participate in such shows? Says Swapnil, "Everyone loves to laugh and nothing is more satisfying for an artiste than making others laugh."

Even though there has been a sudden rise in the number of comic shows on TV, experts feel that comedy has always had a mass appeal. Pankaj Saraswat, Director and Conceptualiser of Great Laughter Challenge says, "right now comedy seems to be the €˜in€™ thing. But comedy is not new to TV. It has always been there. as in other genres, reality shows are making it big, and it had to be so in comedy as well."

Some actors attribute the sudden popularity of these shows to the tiring overdose of soaps on TV. "People are tired of daily soaps and are lapping up comic shows. Everyone loves something that arouses humour," says Karishma Tanna. However, Shekhar Suman, a pioneer of stand-up comedy on Indian television says, "channels, in their hurry to out do one other must take care not to come out with mediocre shows that will toll the death knell of comic shows on TV."

Hardly had versatile actor Varun Badola started enjoying himself on Comedy Circus that he has been eliminated. Things were already not working for him since the beginning with his comedy partner Annu Mudgal quitting in the second episode due to ill health. Varun got a new partner, Deepak Dutta later. €œI had to choose a new partner so we were fighting against time. This was a novel experience as I had never done anything of this sort before. I enjoyed it. I never bother about the results; I just enjoy the journey,€ says Varun who is currently doing Star Plus€™ Ek Chabi Hai Pados Mein and a comedy serial on DD. Though a little sad at the ouster Varun claims he likes to experiment which is why he doesn€™t do the same thing twice. €œI got roles in serials similar to the role in Astitva once the show on Zee was over. Had I done them I would have been a hot star on tv. But I get bored easily and don€™t like repeating myself so I did not take it up.€

Urvashi is just two much!

Our reporter Sandipan Dalal will take you where no fan has been before – right into the lives and living rooms of your favourite celebrities. Get set for classified information.

Sandipan Dalal

Urvashi Dholakia is full of fun. Read on to find more about the birthday girl's eccentricities

LIFE BEGINS AT 30

It's Urvashi's birthday and the actress gets busy with her vast collection of candles. Blowing a candle on her birthday gives her immense satisfaction. "I have never celebrated my birthday but I love blowing candles," she says. You don't have to pester her much about her age, as she declares, "I just turned 29." She further adds, "It was about two years back when it struck me that there's something about 30. So next year I'll have lavish birthday party. You won't believe I have already booked the venue and planned out the menu. I have already consulted the local police station also as the party has to go on till 6 in the morning."

FACE ON THE WALL

There's more to Urvashi Dholakia's madness. Her bedroom walls are devoid of any paints, and the damp weather has left its own impressions on the walls. Take a closer look and the patches often depict faces. When quizzed about her not-any-paint-on-my-wall quirk and she says, "I don't have the patience. Doing up the interiors of the house is such a tiring and never-ending process. By the time my entire house got a facelift I asked the labourers to make their bills and make a quick exit."

EK SE BHALE DO

Don't be startled if you stumble upon identical candles, couches and chandeliers in the Dholakia household. A shopaholic Urvashi believes in 'buying pairs' of whatever catches her attention. She blames it on the weird fixations that her parents possess and consequently, passed on to her. "My parents have fixed corners in the house. My mum and dad have been sleeping on the right and the left side of the bed for over thirty years now. If you forcefully change their positions they will be awake all night," she laughs. She settles in her favourite corner in the living room as pet pooch Blacky vies for her attention. "I have finally, found a mate for him," she says.

WASHER WOMAN

If she wasn't an actress she would have taken up washing and cleaning as her profession. Urvashi loves to wash vessels and clothes. More often than not she asks her house staff to watch TV, as she gets busy with soaps and scrubs. "I'm very bad at cooking so I concentrate my energies on the washing part," she says.

'Sunil took rehearsals for granted'

Kiran Karmarkar condemns the casual attitude of his 'Comedy Circus' teammate

Participant Kiran Karmarkar and his teammate Sunil Sawara was eliminated from the show 'Comedy Circus' (Sony) last week. Apparently, this left Kiran very disturbed.

Moreover, while Kiran was part of the show, he was not too pleased with his teammate. Apparently, Sunil often came late and delayed the rehearsals. However, Kiran attended the rehearsals on time despite shooting for two serials—'Ghar Ek Sapna' (Sahara One) and 'Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan' (Star Plus) and the play 'Kachche Lamhe'. Apparently Kiran, who otherwise maintains his equanimity, got so ruffled that he almost walked off the sets on one occasion.

When contacted, Kiran said that it was not just about coming late. He says, "I can understand if he got late at times. But what upset me was that Sunil took the rehearsals for granted. I am new to this field and performing in pairs was a challenge. Hence I needed more practice. But he didn't seem serious at all. He often commented that it was easy. Perhaps, he found it so because he had mastered it."

Kiran continues, "I got angry and told Sunil that he needed to be serious if he wished to survive. After all, it is he who earns his bread and butter through stand-up comedy. And with more comedians coming with the next season of 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge' (Star One), Sunil will definitely face more competition."

Sunil, on his part says, "I live in Ambernath and the sets were at Andheri. I'd get late due to the long distance. Kiran did get angry with me but I understand his stand."

Ketaki Dave Withdraws!! Manine Dey to the Rescue!!

With Kekti Dave's refusal to return in the Wild Card Round of the Reality Show Comedy Circus, Mannie di steps into her shoes!!

Comedy Circus the Reality Show with a Difference has managed to catch the eye of audience, as for the first time, fans see their favorite TV stars actually making an attempt to make everyone laugh with their witty comments. This week , all 4 evicted jodi's (Varun Badola & Deepak Dutta, Ketaki Dave & Pratap Fauzdar, Kiran Karmarkar & Sunil Sawara, Swapnil Joshi & VIP) from Comedy Circus will get a second chance to perform and put forward their best to impress the judges, win the audiences and get back on the show!

But here comes the unexpected twist!! Ketki Dave who is known for her comic timing, seemed to be in "Once bitten twice shy" mood and backed out at the last moment, refusing to participate and return to the show. The reason for the sudden denial was that she knew it takes lot of time and commitment by an actor to put up a successful comedy act and since she had her assignments which had made her hands full of work ,but with less of time, she didn't think she will be able to take out adequate time for the rehearsals!!

This was indeed a shock to the producers of the show and they went on a hunt to look out for a replacement for this versatile actress. However the production house Optimyistix found their saviour in the great actor Mannine de who agreed to be part of the show, thus taking them out of trouble and making sure that the golden opportunity for the other contestants doesn't go down the drains.

That's what we call a sportive person Manninie, who has indeed proved her comic timing onscreen by portaying the character of dumb yet sweet Pari Kapadia in the show Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin with ease!! The wild card entry round will be indeed a treat to watch now!!

Don't forget to tune in to watch sassy Maninee De & witty Pratap Fauzdar for the very first time perform on what's hot about marriage and what's not, this Saturday, July 21 at 9.30 p.m. only on Sony Entertainment Television.

Leggy Raho

Shruti Seth, the bubbly anchor of Sony TV's Comedy Circus, was recently operated for varicose veins. The actress had to report for work within three days of operation. Though in great pain, the actress put on a brave front and kept up the spirit of the show. The actress kept on her feet for hours and willingly gave several retakes, ignoring her aching legs.

Says Shruti, "I got my varicose veins removed recently and I have been advised not to stress myself. I had no choice but to shoot as the episodes had to be shot timely. I was uncomfortable, had difficulty walking besides I had to give many re-takes. I am not supposed to wear heels but since I could not wear flats on the sets, I wore heels while shooting for more than three hours."
