Would you tolerate your daughter's husband starting a polygamist cult clan in the name of God?

Tolerance is a very relative term really. No I am not tolerant at all. I am very strong willed, have a strong personal opinions and beliefs and cannot tolerate anyone attempting to invade my worldly bubble. That being said I do not invade other peoples bubbles either.

I am open minded, I live and let live. When my bubble is broken, I cannot live....so I do not let people who do that live.

👏You so have a way to put things succinctly RTH - love the way youve summed this up!!!
I like to think I am strong willed and very opinionated too - but would probably have been mortified if someone had called me intolerant!
I shall be proud to be intolerant henceforth!

Being strong willed and opinionated qualify for being intolerant?

I won?t count myself as being intolerant and join the league of intolerant individuals indulged in honor killing, inhuman acts etc.

There are more occasions where tolerance is practiced as supposed to being intolerant on some extreme scenarios doesn?t make oneself intolerant. Again, all individuals are free willed to make their calls and hence face the consequences this doesn?t mean we should raise a support flag for everyone?s individual decision but personally make your own call on case to case basis on what?s right or wrong, said isn?t it fair on being a person practicing tolerance with few exceptions😊.

* Edit - ^^^ general opinion no offense meant.Thnxs!

Hey Anshu - no offence taken!👍🏼
On my part, I was talking tongue in cheek 😊
Intolerance of one's principles/beliefs held is probably going to be taken quite well if those beliefs are acceptable to the majority
It's when the priciples held go against the majority that problems arise and precisely where (as you rightly point out) on a case by case basis, tolerance may need to be exercised.
Tolerance can never be unlimited in a society, but not reaching a conclusion until considering all the facts, keeping an open instead of a closed mind are components of IMO a much better approach than tarring everyone with the same brush.

I think there are a whole lot of people who practice faux tolerance. They claim to be tolerant, but the second something goes against their belief system they are hell bent on forcing everything to align with their beliefs.

I personally do not consider myself intolerant. But then when I look retrospectively, there are many things I do not like. There are many religious, social, political beliefs that I personally consider ridiculous, absurd, stupid and wonder how the hell people can think like that. Being a highly opinionated person you find a lot more things that appear to go against your personal views.

However, when I find someone whose thought process is radically opposite mine it does not bother me. I do my thing, they do theirs. As long as they do not bother me, I dont bother them. Yes I may debate and argue points, but that does not mean I need to change someones perspective. It is more of debating to force everyone to see things in a different perspective, walk in someone else shoes. Other peoples shoes can be too big, too small and uncomfortable but its a learning experience to walk in them.

Funny you say that Gauri... It reminds me of how I feel about rules....and my propensity and inclination to break them, just for the sheer hell of it
Of course I appreciate it also depends on the rules....
I wouldnt for example break a rule saying "Swimming not allowed - shark infested area!" but would generally be intolerant of "No eating/drinking/talking/ living/allowing kids" type of rules
For the benefit of some individuals who may be alarmed by this, rest assured, I will be wholly and utterly tolerant of, and in compliance with, the rules on IF.....

One needs to practice tolerance for the benefit of themselves.. But yes, there is level of tolerance.. One can hv low and the other high.. Its always good to maintain a high level of tolerance.. If you are not tolerant enough to handle certain sensitive issues, then you are definitely to fall into trouble...

I practice tolerance when needed and when I need to break out, I do that too.. It all depends upon how you can control yourself... Meditation and Yoga are the best ways to maintain high tolerance level and its always better to maintain them for the best of you and others as well!!

Yes, I practice tolerance (I may practice, I don't always get it right, but that's why I practice it, and not lecture on it)

I always try to withhold judgment until after all the facts have been placed before me. I like people, and try to be a friend to everybody, even the people who don't like me for whatever reasons. (politics, social issues, whatever)

I can't always do it, but I like to look at them the way their mothers first saw them in her arms. Then they're people who may disagree with me, but they're still people
**For Me**
"Relaxing with yourself is the key to becoming more tolerant"

Be more tolerant offers you a powerful and effective way to begin the transformation you desire. You will find that the level of relaxation you are able to experience dramatically increases as you put aside the need to be on guard all the time. You will gain new understanding of what has influenced you in the past and how your life can change in the future as you become more tolerant.

Two things can make a person tolerent to somthing,
1. love . When you are in love , to some extent you may tolerate somthing you can not assimilate, if it is not a serious issue.
2. power. To some extent you may tolerate a powerful person, but not always.
