MELBOURNE: Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef, who was wrongly accused of having links with the failed UK terror plot, on Monday said that the Australian authorities might have targeted him because of his "race and religion".

"It might be just because I am an Asian Muslim," the 27-year-old Bangalore medico was quoted as saying on ABC radio.

"The government needs to look into the matter of why I was arrested in the first place and whether there was any real, legitimate threat. The case was circumstantial," he said.

Haneef said he had never experienced any racism from colleagues or patients while working at the Gold Coast Hospital and that his idea of Australia as a fair country had not been changed.

The Australian government needs to consider what prompted the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to arrest him though there was never sufficient evidence linking him to the bombing plot, he said.

The Federal Government has confirmed it will hold a judicial inquiry into why Haneef was wrongly charged in the case.

Haneef said he would "very happily" return to work at the Gold Coast Hospital but had not yet made up his mind. He said his wife, his mother and his wife's mother were deciding whether they wanted him to return to work in Australia.

Dear friends!

Good Morning/ Good Afternoon / good evening to all of you from Me.

Coming back to the topic:

How far is it justified to use the racism and religion tag is every thing?

Should the immigrants understand their limits when they are in different country?

Will the foreign country people trust the immigrants? Or should those nations trust every immigrant and put its security at stake?

regards,

Mythili

Never, If they don't have sufficient, legitimate proof then they have nothing. To arrest someone just for having a certian race/religion is not only stereotyping and an insult, it also has no sufficient backing as being a threat.

What are these limits? Everyone has to follow the letter of the law (not that everyone does but that's beside the point) and that includes the immigrants.

Not every country is the same, however if it's a free country then they should.

Again where's the security problem. What is it that these immigrants are doing that could put the security of the country at risk?

Going to a different worshiping place? Wearing different cloths? These things are hardly a threat to national security.

And what makes one think that immigrants are the issue? What about those who are born and raised citizens (along with their ancestors) who sell their countries security for their own advantage.

i think if you are on the benefiting end... by all means use the race, caste, religion tag...back home if you cant get admission to college because you are brahmin, take up a name of backward caste and go on get the admission.... affirmative action is in great fashion these days...

regarding immigrants... if a cop catches u for speeding.. by all means threaten him about his bigotry and racial bias.... since the race/gender bias does exist... and not a surprise...

As I said affirmative action is in fashion.. so the weaker is always trusted...more than whites here, brahmins back home...😊

This subject reminded me of what Mohd. Azharuddin (ex. Cricket Captain) said when he was accused of match-fixing. His statement drew him flak and even the minority didn't side with him and asked him to apologize which he finally did.

How far is it justified to use the racism and religion tag is every thing? Depends. In the given situation if people of a certain origin are being scrutinized then I would side with the govt. It is discrimination but sometimes circumstances prompt us to take severe measures for safety. But if the scrutiny goes as far as harming one's future and brings humiliation then it is harassment.

Should the immigrants understand their limits when they are in different country?

I think they should. Passing achar bottles in a plane and talking loudly in native language might prompt officials to detain you (Spain case)😛.

Will the foreign country people trust the immigrants? Or should those nations trust every immigrant and put its security at stake?

Use their discretion.

Aptly said. It is ok if 85 % African-Americans vote for Obama but it would be racism if 85% Whites vote for a White candidate.
