Hello Members

When it comes to singers we have always had comparisons as to who is the best.. After hearing to the Old Singers like Kishore kumar, Mohommad Rafi, Talat Mahmood, Shamshad Begum, Lata Mangeskar and Asha Bhonsle - its a tendency of the humans to start comparing these legends with that of the new singers or the upcoming singers..

This is clearly evident in reality shows where the contestants sing the songs of the legends and we also try to see if they can come upto the expectation of the original songs.. And most of the time we are disappointed.. The judges and mentors of the show also stress on the point that its hard to sing these songs and should not be compared with that of the originals..

Both the points are valid - Some of them, try to find the old singers in that of the upcoming singers so we get to hear the golden voices yet again.. But we are in vain..

So, the question here is - Is it right to compare the Old singers and New singers

So, whats your take on this comparison??

No. We should not compare old and new. Old was gold and new is new.

Old music was different so the voice had to be different. Music now is fast and "hip" so the voices have to fast and "hip."

My point of view.

Great discussion!!

we should compare old singers and new singers....because some people like old songs and some like new songs.....old singers are like by people who were born in 60's and 70's and new generation people like new singers because of the way they sing..so its ok to compare old singers and new singers because everybody thinks different way ...some will think its ok to compare and some wont think its ok..but i say u can compare old and new singers..

There is always a human tendency to compare, there is always a tendency to say what we had was good and what we have isnt as good.

But time changes, parameters of defination change

There was a time before the 50's when the singer had to be trained, he was also supposed to be an actor/actress(the gender is intentional)

Then times changed all the singer was supposed to be was trained, and should be able to emote the feelings, but these singers of the 50/60/70's were looked down upon by the the lovers of pre-50's era

Then came a time when singers of 70's/80's who were not classically trained but could still emote the feelings in the song, now they were looked down upon

then came singers of 90's and 2000 who neither were trained nor had the emotions b'cos all that was important was the beats and the rthym and are looked down upon the lovers of the last 50-60 years.

Times change, requirements of a singer have changed, the playing conditions have changed

how can you compare?

We all say that u just can not compare new singers to the old timers.true, there is no comparison at all.I think we should do reverse. Now lets imagine who could have sung Satrangi re or other R Rehman composition.Perhaps sareg is right by saying 'But time changes, parameters of defination change'.There so many new songs that old singers could not sing.in my opinion current gen singers like sonu nigam or shaan, they can sing oldies very well.

No, it won't be fair on new singers for them to be compared to old ones...
The thing is,times have changed, and today, its almost impossible to find singers like the ones in the Golden Era. And around 40 or 50 years down the line, we won't have singers like today...the songs toda are much different, and though we have some amazing singers today, how many of them can sing the same songs sung by legends like Lataji or Rafi Saab the way they had at that time? Today, old songs sung by new singers will have a completely different feel to it, and new songs will be completely different from old songs..
Plus, audience tastes have changed to a great extent, and music directors too have started making different kind of music. Can you see any music director today composing a song like Chaudhvi ka Chaand? Or in the 60s, culd we find any music director composing a song like Ashiq Banaaya Aapne?
Over time, the music scene has changed. Legends from the past have and always will remain legends..and who knows, maybe 50 years down the line, some singer today might be a legend...
So, no, I don't think the comparison is fair, thoguh its enivitable, since, as you've said, it's human nature to compare..

Greatt topic Anu Di!!! 👏 👏

It's not fair to compare old vs new. The kind of music, voice, songs people
prefer has changed overtime. They should both be enjoyed as separate
entities...no point in comparing 😛
