One does stuff for the benefit of community, whatever it costs!

yes some have a balance on what it is taking to do comunity service but in general.

Its said don't be selfish make life better place for all and contribution in that cause is divine, don't wanna name people here but there are people who go all out for betterment of humanity, failing to fulfill thier personal commitments.

Doing stuff for the benefit of the whole community / human race at the expense of personal commitments morally correct?

there is no comparison to a selfless deed. however, helping people at the expense of personal commitments, it depends on what personal commitments you have. if the personal commitments is germane to the individual and his own family is not affected then its ok but if the personal commitment involves helping your own people then i guess the person must first take care of those necessities rather than going out to help others. when i refer family it is nuclear family. there is a saying to clean you own backyard before cleaning others, i guess it fits here very well. if the personal commitment involves taking care of nuclear family then it becomes more of a family commitment and the person must take care of it first before going out and extending helping hand to others. there is no use helping the poor kids when your own kids are being neglected. i know this might be a lame example but i hope you get the idea.

Depends on how much the community has contributed to your survival.. After all using big words like the "community service" eventually leads to some smaller actions directed to a bunch of individuals or so....

good point qwerty, but again, benefitting few is better than benefitting none.

i support community service and try do something or the other everywhere i go. it does not always drain a person or demand a person to make big sacrifices. i look fwd to doing that only after i retire 😊.. got to be a bit selfish until then.

raj, if the community work affects ones near and dear DEEPLY (given they are not bein unreasonable 😳) , then i don't feel too positive about community service.

Family responsibilities matter too. I feel that only the greater of the greatest have made such sacrifices for our freedom and such and i wud not call them immoral. 😳

Unless you are doing something on a grand global scale ...a la Mahatma Gandhi or Mother Teresa ( Gandhi ignored his family and Mother Teresa was a nun btw) no point ignoring your primary responsibilities towards your family and trying to make a difference to other peoples' lives !

Anshu, I think we all do owe to give back to society. This world do exist because there are many selfless people who work for betterment of society. Now-a-days people are becoming more selfish and we do already see the imapct on society. There is a saying 'You need a village to raise your kids' so basically society does play a big role in eveyone's life. If we do not take care of it today we will pay for it tomorrow.

Jahan tak sawal hai sacrificing your personal commitments, so anshu it depends on personality. Most of the time the people do it as they can feel other people pain so it becomes obvious for them to sacrifice some of their personal commitments. I do agree that's not the right thing to do as they need to take care of themselves too. par aisa hota nahin ....

I do believe firmly that we owe to society & need to give back to it. We may not see the results of it today but they will always be there. I have another belief 'apne liye to jaanwar bhi jeeta hai to sirf apne liye jiye to kya jiye. jaanwar aur insan mein kuch to farak hona chahiye' The happiness you see doing things for the people, which are not your primary responsibility, gives oneself so much happiness one can't explain. This only can be felt by doing it....

If you take care of just yourself there is only one person to take care of your self, but if you take care of people then there are many people to think about you and yourself. You succeed as people want you to succeed.

You could do things in many manners not just as we define in US. We can help people just by guiding, may help monitary, may help by giving time or may be just by being there when they need us.....

These are just my POV. I do not mean to hurt anyone so I am in advance sorry if hurted anyone's sentiment by me saying anything above which I did.

Tania, welcome back dear. We missed you 🤗

Raj, I think charity begins at home. Once we are done doing our duties towards the people we are related to, then only we should extend a helping hand at the community. Raising your kids to be productive and good moral citizens is also a kind of help that makes communities better. Making sure all your relatives, close or extended, have basic neccessities and can turn to you in their hour of need (if you can afford it) rather than to the welfare system government provides also helps the community as you are helping a handful of people letting go of their claim over that welfare pot. We all do pay taxes and take part in the fundraising our companies organize. So, in a way, we are doing our share of helping the community we are living in.

After fulfilling all your personal duties satisfactorily, there's nothing wrong in going out and helping the community....but never at the cost of ignoring the needs of your own family.

Some people are inherently selfless and they help others without any ulterior motives...but in today's world, many do the community work for one or the other selfish reason...be it becoming popular, getting political advantage etc. I personally believe in helping others w/o expecting anything in return...provided I am not neglecting my family's needs...be it timewise or moneywise. 😊

Agreed Qwerts... Good actions don't always follow good intentions...

If it is as simple as feeding the hungry or spending some time at the hospital with sick few hours a month then it ok but once one starts into "protecting" " or "fighting" for others in general and not on one one basis then it is a self serving action to a certain extent..

Yeah and here its a form of punishment for crime isnt it? So why would punish himself/herself without a good reason?😆
