Actually most sterotypes have a reason, atleast most that have been cited till now

example

Girls are smart - yeah they top in all school exams these days, although

bookish=smart is a stereotype and a major overstatement 😆

Women with cooking, cleaning the house, having a grater attachment to children (maternal instinct)... Where's the equality of women with men? Too much stereotyping of women 😡

I was going to make another thread on this but then thought to bring this thread to front page.

Recently Prashant Tamang after becoming Indian Idol had gone through many humiliating comments. Nepalis are called gorkhas, Bahadurs and such. One RJ made some rude comments on the same. He apologized later but the damage is done. People are hurt.

I met a learned person (many years elder to me) once who thought capital of Kerala was Bangalore (this was before IT boom). When I corrected the person he replied, what difference does it make because all of South is the same.😕. All are branded as Madrasis. Now the times have changed and people recognize different Southern states because of IT boom. Still there was a time when the stereotyping irked many.

UP-ites are called Baniyas and Kanjoos. Punjabis are made fun of being fools and most of the jokes are made on them. Bengalis are known to stink of Mustard oil.

The list goes on............It also extends to people following different religion.

My questions,

Is stereotyping an act of ignorance because of limited education? Or is it plain inconsiderateness?

How different is this from American/British/Aussies stereotyping Indians? Like assuming India is full of snake charmers and Elephants because that is what is shown on Discovery.😛

Why is that offensive and we disregard Indian stereotyping?

sometimes ignorance, sometimes limited education, sometimes lack of consideration and respect for the other individuals

not much. in fact, if at all, it is worse, because aren't we supposed to be kins? atleast the others are from foreign lands..
