Abortion: Is it a woman's right and/or choice, or is it an issue for social judgement?

Again, the world is at war with judiciary over women's abortion rights!

Right to Life and Health —- Abortion is a Human Right for Women.

Abortion is a highly sensitive topic that elicits strongly held beliefs. We are all aware of that.

Abortion rights are back in discussion, partly due to the ruling by Roe v Wade judgement, and the consequent developments in other countries on this issue.

Nearly 70 million women suffer undesired pregnancies each year. The consequences of these pregnancies will vary greatly depending on circumstances such as a woman's health, family ties, economic resources, and access to medical treatment. These and other considerations will impact her decision to carry a pregnancy to term or have an abortion. Given the complexities of this decision, the pregnant woman is the only one who can take a decision.

Governments should respect a woman's right to make reproductive decisions.

Where abortion is illegal and unsafe, women are forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term or suffer serious health consequences and even death because of ineffective methods.

The US Supreme Court's Roe vs. Wade decision in 1998 acknowledged that women could only participate freely and equitably in society if they could have the freedom to make autonomous pregnancy decisions.

No one understands why Roe vs. Wade made such a severe judgement all of a sudden now.

Abortion should never be a means of condemning a woman, it is more a measure of the health of a society. Because women are the child-bearing gender, they require a protective society, an understanding culture.

There is no freedom, no equality, no dignity and personhood possible for women until they assert and demand control over their own bodies and reproductive process. The right to have an abortion is a matter of individual conscience and conscious choice for the women concerned

Women's sexuality, fertility, and reproductive health are rarely deemed essential enough to be discussed in public. Because of the looming effect of society's patriarchal setup in general, such talks are frequently hushed.

Even though abortion is legal in India and is a fundamental right for women, the social stigma attached to it keeps many women from seeking it. Due to these societal restrictions, many people continue to use illegal resources.

What is your opinion on this issue, friends?

It is a highly sensitive subject, please discuss on this topic with dignity and wisdom.

On ITV serials, it is the most sought after topic to draw an average viewer's attention to create interest easily!

In most of the serials, Dils, Mils, and Sils will plot against each other and while doing so, they follow the easiest method, a banana peel or a few splashes of tel will do the trick, as if it is the best solution to win over the other!!

On the other side ---

An Indian daily soap that talks about prevalent issues like acid attacks, high rates of abortion of female fetuses will soon be world's most watched show with over 400 million viewership across 50 countries. 👏

The show Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon traces the journey of a young female doctor Sneha Mathur (played by Meinal Vaishnav), who quits her well-paid city job to work in her village.

In some cases I think abortion is necessary such as when it is risky for the mother's health or other medical reasons where the doctors advise to abort it, but apart from that I think it should be avoided.

Women go for abortion for their own selfish reasons such as not being ready to take responsibility of the child or they don't want to ruin their body, if that's the case they should take precautions before becoming pregnant instead of later.

Even if they don't want the baby, there's always the option of putting him up for adoption instead of ending it's existence. There are many people out there who are childless and will gladly take him.

Mind if I dive into this discussion?

I saw this clip on Insta a while ago & I think that one question is sufficient to answer about who should be making the decisions in regards to a woman's body.

It is hard to say whether it is right or wrong. All scenarios have pros and cons.

Should we accept only when it affects health?

What about financial situation?

What about age?

What about personal responsibilities?

What about failed birth control?

What about partner issues?

What about atrocities?

People should not use it as a tool to get away from their reckless acts.

In other situations, they need to take an informed decision.

Cheers..

I feel a progressive society must leave the choice to keep or abort a foetus completely up to the person that's carrying it, without the associated stigma or any repercussions either direct or indirect.

Nobody but the person who is pregnant should get to judge if that person's decision to keep/abort is 'worthy'. All we need to ensure as a livable society is that no matter their choice, the pregnant person is allowed the necessary medical and social coverage to get through this period safely and comfortably.

Firstly, it's not just "women" who get pregnant so I find the title a bit restrictive. People with Uterus - have should have the right to decide what they want. It is a basic human right, it shouldn't even be up for debate.

Human Rights are for everyone, they can choose to have a child, not have one or whatever they feel fit.

Making abortion illegal just makes it more difficult and life-threatening in most cases instead of safe.

As Proteeti said, no one but the pregnant woman should decide whether to keep or abort the foetus.

Her rights as a living, breathing, fully formed human being triumphs that of an unborn foetus. In fact, the legislators taking away that right from a woman is a violation of her basic human right, and a way to control the populace through religion and capitalism.

Historically, anti-abortion laws do not prevent abortion. They encourage medically unsafe abortions and inflict mental trauma on a woman, who is in no position to provide for a child. The state will wash their hands off the child’s responsibility the moment it’s born, but the woman and the families involved would continue to suffer.

There are situations beyond the medical like financial, mental health and personal constraints that prevent a woman from giving birth and raising a child. Often, teenagers get pregnant without realising the ramifications of unprotected sex. Sometimes, despite all precautions, contraception breaks and a woman finds herself with an undesirable pregnancy.

Only a woman who is mentally, financially and physically ready should bear the responsibility of a child.

No one else gets a say, especially those who don’t have a uterus, wouldn’t bear the responsibility for her child, and won’t pay her and the child’s bills.

Like Pro and Prats stated, this decision should only be taken by the person who is pregnant. No one else has any right to take the decison away from that person.

ITV and BW always seems to make a track of pregnancy and abortion and they seem to show how MIL, DIL n others always seem to harm the FLs during pregnancy. They also show how the family tells the FL to abort the child if its not a boy which is so horrible

I hope the world changes and pregnancy should be something that is wanted and not forced n if its unwanted hope they get choice to abort it.
