Exquisite and very relevant and sensitive thread, dear Madi, kudos to you!👍🏼
Have seen many covid patients in my immediate family and among my close friends, just one advice, never take it lightly, this is a nasty disease which can suddenly exacerbate. The first days are generally manageable but the sting in its fat tail is from the sixth to tenth or twelfth day depending on the severity of the case. It is then that lung and other inflammations start. Hence a HRCT lung test is recommended on the sixth day to determine the severity of the disease, it is below or up to 8 on a score of 25, it is considered mild and the patient can be home quarantined, above that it is moderate and over 15/16 is severe, these need hospitalization because lungs have been affected severely. Prompt medical treatment helps.
Oxygen monitoring every four hours and fever monitoring is recommended for even home quarantine patients, anything below 94 warrants hospitalization. In Covid, have seen family members unable to walk much due to the extreme exhaustion, then a six minute walk test is recommended for home quarantine patients, walk continuosly at the speed your body allows with the oximeter on your middle finger and if at the end of six minutes, your oxygen levels are less than 92 hospitalization is required. Repeat, prompt medical treatment in covid helps in recovery.
Also, as soon as you are diagnosed, your doctor will do blood tests like CBC ( to chk WBC, platelets and other counts), CRP Quantitative test for extent of inflammation, uric acid level, , creatinine test, Sgot and Sgpt to check inflammation and the anti viral covid medicines at times raise these levels, so it is necessary to check them and change the medicines if required. After sixth day, when there is more inflammation, a repeat of these blood tests are asked for and also the D Dimer blood test which if over 500 level, will show tendency to form blood clots and suitable medications will be administered to alleviate the problem. If levels are over 1000, then there are blood clots which could be treated by injections. Generally, we hear of patients succumbing to heart problems after covid, this test helps us be more aware of our problem. But no self medication please, your doctor will advise on these tests, just sharing this for awareness.
Post recovery too, the fatigue and cough and in long covid patients, some symptoms prevail, your doctor can advise you and give suitable medications. This is a deadly virus, not to be taken lightly, I repeat, needs constant monitoring and a good diet. After recovery, use a Spirometer or do lung exercises to improve your lung condition. Those who experience loss of taste or smell, it will come back to normal post recovery, guess three days with no fever is a sign you are out of Covid. Some moderate and severe patients experience brain or memory fog after recovery and I know a relative would send whatsapp messages to the wrong people. But in 3-5 months post recovery, this also rectifies.
Do not fear, this can be treated but what is important in covid is to test immediately on the day you develop fever and cold symptoms, if a normal flu, it will come negative at the most. But do not be in denial that you cannot get covid and prevent testing. Most severe or death cases are due to late diagnosis. Also, a relative of mine, tested negative twice but had mild fever and fatigue, so did the lung scan which confirmed mild covid which can flare up after sixth day.
All what I have written here is due to my experience of family members and friends but do not self medicate, tele consult your doctor constantly if in home quarantine. And of course, isolate yourself.
Mental health is a pertinent issue and can be maintained by keeping yourself occupied in chores, meditation, entertainment, difficult in such times, with isolation and a deteriorating illness but keep your spirits up, only you can do this, after all, this too shall pass!🤗
Wishing all my IF friends a blessed and healthy life!
