There's no harm being religious but nowadays it's linked to intolerance as people misuse the word by putting down other religions, imposing their thoughts on others and shutting up people who want to even discuss about it in a civil manner.

The reason that religion and intolerance has become synonymous is because the people who wear their pride on their sleeves usually end up being jerks.

Check twitter. Any profile that says things like "Proud Hindu" "Proud Muslim" "Proud Christian" turns out to have an a*****e behind it. Just scroll down and you will see them saying disgusting things about other religions, people, countries and spreading hatred and vile political agendas. Almost all of them turn out like that.

It's like in the US, if you see someone calling themselves a "proud white man" you can bet it's going to be a horrible person. It's not something that is said innocently. There is a whole framework and agenda behind it.

The problem does not lie with religion but how people interpret or misinterpret the sayings and teachings to suit their agendas.

As a muslim can tell you one thing, there are 72 fractions who has interpreted the teachings of our Prophet (SAW) and Quran in different ways. In this world both good & bad exists, so there will be some who will twist or hide the true sayings of their religion and would preach those wrong teaching to those who are ignorant. This is how a intolerance towards other start as they are ignorant about their own true sayings of their religion.

Can you confirm a few things for me if you've read the Quran yourself?

Because:

Religion has been taken over by people who are more interested in the politics of it than the spirituality. Admitting to being religious will now identify you with bigots.

Even if the world knows you're not a bigot, they will use your religiosity to condemn you.

Basically, you can't win.
