Coming back to the topic very seriously!!!

I feel addressing elder people Uncle or Aunty is a part of tradition. We need not be neice or nephew of the other person to address the other person "Uncle".

Have a glance at these with which I agree:

In the Indian culture, people show respect to their elders by addressing them in plural. A simple he/she cannot be substituted, because then the idea behind the use of plural address would be lost. So, in addressing an elder person, either choice-retaining the plural form or replacing it by a simple "you"-will lead to ambiguity.

It seems artificial here for family members to greet one another with "good morning," "have a nice day," etc., to apologize, or to express gratitude by saying "thank you."

refernce: http://www.accurapid.com/journal/19culture.htm

If you are in a mixed group, always greet the elders and the women first.
Don't shout to be heard. Don't interrupt others while they're talking.
Don't address elders and seniors by their names, unless they have specially asked you to, in India at any rate. Try 'Sir/ Ma'am' for strangers and 'Uncle/ Aunty' (or Chachaji, Mausiji etc) for familiar people. For a stranger who is not so old, it is better to suffix the name with 'ji', as a mark of respect.

Finally, I feel one needs to have respect for the other Person,it does'nt matter how we address the person.

For those of you who are unaware,
even in Japan, the verbs vary according to the age of the person / position of the person being addressed. Little expressions while conversing are significantly different and it matters how one adresses the other.

waise on a serious note I agree with what Mythili posted...... we normally address the elders with "aap" rather than "tum" out of respect similarly we address them with such relations as well..... 😃
